ABSTRACT

Objective@#To clarify the prognostic value of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients.@*Methods@#literature on the correlation between NLR and the prognosis and clinicopathological features of OSCC was searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane and Embase. The outcome indicators, including overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), disease-specific survival (DSS), tumor size, cervical lymph node metastasis, tumor stage, extracapsular lymph node invasion and peripheral nerve invasion, were analyzed by RevMan5.3 software@*Results @# In total, 6 180 patients were included in 23 studies. The analysis showed that NLR was significantly negatively correlated with OS [HR=1.62, 95%CI(1.38, 1.91), P < 0.001], DFS [HR=1.48, 95%CI(1.24, 1.77), P < 0.001] and DSS [HR=1.87, 95%CI(1.60, 2.20), P < 0.001]. In addition, higher NLR values were positively correlated with tumor size [OR=2.68, 95%CI (1.84, 3.90), P < 0.001], cervical lymph node metastasis [OR=1.59, 95%CI (1.35, 1.88), P < 0.001], tumor stage [OR=2.85, 95%CI (2.35, 3.47), P < 0.001], extralymphatic invasion [OR=1.72, 95%CI (1.23, 2.40), P=0.001], and peripheral nerve invasion [OR=1.70, 95%CI (1.29, 2.24), P < 0.001]. However, there was no significant correlation with age [OR=0.96, 95%CI (0.71, 1.29), P=0.77], sex [OR=1.08, 95%CI (0.88, 1.33), P=0.55], or degree of differentiation [OR=1.15, 95%CI (0.92, 1.43), P=0.22]@*Conclusion @#Elevated NLR was significantly associated with the prognosis and clinicopathological features of OSCC and might be an independent prognostic factor.

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To analyze and study the corneal nerve invasion phenomenon of Bowman's membrane in patients with IIIA lattice corneal dystrophy by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Quantitative analysis of 10a continuous observation image data was performed, followed by self-control studies.
METHODS: A total of 10 patients(13 eyes)with IIIA Lattice corneal dystrophy were continuously examined by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The data were observed and analyzed.
RESULTS: The normal corneal nerve of Bowman's membrane(Grade 0)of IIIA LCD patients gradually decreased with the prolongation of observation time. The nerves of grade I to V involved(amyloid-wrapped nerve fibers)gradually increased correspondingly. So suggested that the corneal nerve invasion of Bowman's membrane(amyloid deposits)in patients with IIIA LCD were gradually increasing with time.
CONCLUSION: In patients with type ⅢA lattice corneal dystrophy, there is a neurotropic phenomenon in Bowman's membrane, which gradually worsens with the aggravation of the lesion. This lesion can explain the recurrent epithelial damage of the IIIA LCD from some degrees. Continuous observation of patients with type IIIA LCD by corneal laser confocal microscopy can well understand the development of the lesion and explain its clinical manifestations.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Optic nerve invasion is an important cause of mortality in retinoblastoma. We aimed correlate preoperative imaging and surgical histopathology findings in enucleated eyes with retinoblastoma to determine the efficacy of preoperative imaging in predicting optic nerve invasion in retinoblastoma. Methods: A retrospective review of records of all patients undergoing primary enucleation for retinoblastoma at a tertiary eyecare system between March 2013 and December 2017 with all patients having undergone preoperative imaging, either CT scan or MRI. Data was analyzed statistically to determine the correlation between preoperative CT scan/MRI and histopathology. Results: Totally, 97 eyes of 97 patients were included in the study who underwent primary enucleation for unilateral retinoblastoma. The average age at presentation was 27.8 months with the chief complaint being leukocoria in all the cases. 14 patients (14.43%) had evidence of optic nerve involvement in preoperative imaging. 30 patients had optic nerve invasion on histopathology (laminar and retrolaminar). Spearman's rank correlation test revealed a significant correlation between MRI findings and HP and an insignficant correlation between CT findings and HP. The CT scan had a sensitivity of 20%, specificity of 88.89%, 50% positive predictive value and 66.67% negative predictive value. MRI had a sensitivity of 40%, specificity of 93.55%, positive predictive value of 66.67% and a negative predictive value of 82.86%. Conclusion: MRI showed significant moderate correlation with surgical histopathology for predicting optic nerve invasion in retinoblastoma whereas CT shows insignificant correlation with HPE. Therefore, we recommend MRI for predicting optic nerve invasion in cases of retinoblastoma.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the expression of CC chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6) in human adenoid cystic carcinoma tissue of salivary glands, and to clarify the mechanism of CCR6 in the nerve invasion of human adenoid cystic carcinoma. Methods: Immumohistochemical method (SP) was performed to detect the expression of CCR6 in 30 cases of cancer tissue of the patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma (including 18 cases in nerve invasion group and 12 cases in non-nerve invasion group) and 22 cases of normal salivary gland tissue. The relationship between the positive expression rate of CCR6 and the clinicopathological features of the patients were analyzed. Results: CCR6 was positively expressed in 22 cases among 30 cases of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma tissue, and the positive expression rate was 73. 33%. The immunohistochemical staining showed that CCR6 mainly expressed in the cell membrane and cytoplasm of cancer cells. All of the 22 cases of normal salivary gland tissue were negative to CCR6 expression; the difference of the positive expression rate of CCR6 between two groups was statistically significant (P0. 05). Conclusion: CCR6 plays an important role in the development of human salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma and is closely related to the nerve invasion.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To analyze the relationship between clinicopathologic characteristics of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and its prognosis.@*Methods@#Fifty-two cases of PMP collected from 2012 to 2017 at Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University were reviewed using the diagnostic criteria of WHO 2010. The histopathologic features, including original location, neural invasion and calcification were observed; and the relationship with prognosis was analyzed. Immunohistochemical staining for CK7, CK20 and CDX2 was performed on all cases. ER, PR, and p16 were additionally performed on those without clear origin.@*Results@#Patients′ mean age was 52.0 years, and included 29 males and 23 females. Thirty-two cases were derived from appendix; among them, 23 were low grade and 29 were high grade. Signet ring-cells, neural invasion and calcification were detected in 15, 12 and 9 cases respectively. Neural invasion was associated with adverse prognosis (P=0.025) and signet ring cell morphology (P<0.01). Prognosis was not related to gender, age, original location or grade.@*Conclusion@#Neural invasion is not uncommon in PMP and predicts a bad prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate nerve growth factor (β-NGF) and its receptors expression in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Methods Expression and distribution of β-NGF, tyrosine kinase A (TrKA) and P75NGFR were detected in operation tissue specimens of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR. Relations of β-NGF and its receptors with clinicalpathological characters, especially nerve invasion were analyzed. Results β-NGF and TrKA expression are higher in pancreatic adenocarcinoma than normal pancreas, and the differences are significant (P < 0. 01). Β-NGF and TrKA expression are associated with the differentiation grades(DG), lymphatic node metastasis, nerve invasion and surgical pathological stages. Poorer of DG and later stages, more expression of β-NGF and TrKA. Β-NGF and TrKA expression have positive correlations. Β-NGF, TrKA and P75NGFR mRNA expression have significantly increased 3.84,4. 23 and 2. 41 times than normal tissues by real-time PCR, respectively. Conclusions β-NGF and TrKA might play potential rules in carcinogenesis for pancreatic cancer, have affinity with clinicopathological characters of pancreatic cancer. Β-NGF and TrKA may have mutual effect in signal transduction leading to perineural invasion of pancreatic carcinoma.
