Aproximación crítica a los problemas sociales de la neuropatía epidémica cubana en su forma óptica / Critical approach to the social problems of the Cuban epidemic neuropathy in its optic pattern

En el presente artículo se realiza una aproximación a los problemas sociales de la forma óptica de la neuropatía epidémica cubana a través de la ciencia, la tecnología y la tecnociencia; asimismo, se analiza el concepto de ciencia que suele definirse por oposición al de técnica, según las diferentes funciones que ella realiza. Por otra parte, se hace un bosquejo histórico y se señala que un cuadro clínico muy similar a esta enfermedad fue descrito durante la última guerra de independencia cubana. También se comenta sobre los valores de universalidad y equidad como requisitos para una vida colectiva digna, y se demuestra que todos los pacientes fueron beneficiados con una asistencia sanitaria equitativa; igualmente, se reseña la relación entre calidad de vida y neuropatía epidémica cubana en su forma óptica, a la vez que se critican los enfoques cuantitativos que tienen como propósito medir la calidad de vida mediante diferentes indicadores

In this work an approach to the social problems of the Cuban epidemic neuropathy in its optic pattern, is carried out through science, technology and technoscience; also, the science concept is analyzed that is usually defined by opposition to that of technique, according to the different functions that it carries out. On the other hand, a historical outline is made and it is pointed out that a clinical pattern very similar to this disease was described during the last war of Cuban independence. There is also a comment on the universality and equality values as requirements for a decent community life, and it is demonstrated that all the patients were benefitted with an equal health assistance; also, the relationship between life quality and Cuban epidemic neuropathy in its optic pattern is pointed out, at the same time, quantitative approaches that have as purpose to measure the life quality by means of different indicators are criticized

Consideraciones actuales sobre la neuropatía epidémica cubana en su forma óptica / Current considerations on the Cuban epidemic neuropathy in its optic type

La neuropatía epidémica cubana en su forma óptica, que afectó al pueblo de Cuba en 1992 y representó un importante desafío para los oftalmólogos del país, ha sido considerada como la más grande epidemia del sistema nervioso en la pasada centuria del xx. A tales efectos, para el presente trabajo se revisó lo publicado sobre el tema en la bibliografía médica acopiada y se expuso lo relacionado con la experiencia práctica de la autora, para lo cual se distribuyó ordenadamente toda la información obtenida: antecedentes históricos (desde el siglo XIX), situación en Cuba cuando se produjo la epidemia, así como períodos evolutivos aceptados hasta ahora y defensa de la posibilidad de que pueda añadirse otro. También se analizan los posibles mecanismos desencadenantes del proceso morboso, sus secuelas y la situación actual de ese problema de salud.

The Cuban epidemic neuropathy in its optic type that affected the Cuban people in 1992 and which represented an important challenge for the ophthalmologists from the country, has been considered the greatest epidemic of the nervous system in the XX century. Taking this into account, a review on the topic was carried out in the collected literature, the author's practical experience on the topic was exposed, and all the obtained information was orderly distributed for the present work: historical background (from the XIX century), situation in Cuba when the epidemic occurred, as well as the evolutive periods accepted up to now and the defense of the possibility that another can be added. The possible triggering mechanisms of the morbid process, its sequelae and the current situation of this health problem are also analyzed.
