ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Maxillary cysts are epithelial cysts of low, expansive growth that, despite having a benign behavior, are one of the main causes of the destruction of the maxillary bones. Among them, the non-odontogenic ones have a much lower incidence that those of odontogenic origin. A bibliographic review was carried out between March and May 2021, in MEDLINE, SciELO, PubMed, Elsevier and Scholar Google databases, under the terms that are in the Descriptors of Health Sciences for Spanish and English languages. The search provided 30 elements, 23 of which met the inclusion criteria of the research. However, hardly any studies were found in Cuba that describe the incidence of non-odontogenic cysts nor much updated literature on the topic worldwide. For that reason, this work aims to describe the etiologic evolution, epidemiology, semiology, diagnosis and treatment of the maxillary non-odontogenic cysts.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to report two cases of nasopalatine duct cyst and to review the relevant literature. In the first case, the lesion was approximately 1.5 cm in size and in the second case 3 cm, both characterized by localized swelling in the hard palate. The two cases presented a radiolucent unilocular image in the region of the incisive foramen. The diagnosis was nasopalatine duct cyst, established by excisional biopsy and anatomopathological examination. The second patient presented a late postoperative infection, four weeks after surgery, and was submitted to antibiotic therapy and drainage. Both patients were followed for more than 30 months, with no signs of recurrence.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Oral lymphoepithelial cyst (OLEC) is an uncommon lesion that develops in oral lymphoid tissue. The aim of the present study was to report a clinical case of OLEC in the tongue. A 22-year-old patient presented a nodular lesion, yellowish, with a softened consistency, measuring 0.5 cm in the ventral surface of the tongue. Under the clinical hypotheses of mucocele and OLEC, excisional biopsy was performed. The histopathological examination revealed a cystic lesion covered by a parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium, which presented in its fibrous capsule a prominent lymphoid tissue. Based on the definitive diagnosis, surgical excision of the lesion was performed.

ABSTRACT

Mouth lymphoepithelial cyst is rare, with few cases reported in literature. The aim of this article is to describe a clinical case, focusing on clinical and diagnostic aspects, treatment and prognosis. The lesion was one year old and had developed as a fibrous nodule in the jugal mucosa of a 71-year-old leucoderma patient. Considering focal inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, fibroma and mucocele as differential diagnosis, excisional biopsy was carried out. A cystic cavity limited by pseudostratified epithelium without projections into the conjunctive tissue, with lymphoid tissue within, was microscopically identified. Without postoperative adverse events, the one-year clinical followup confirmed the favorable prognosis of this kind of lesion.

ABSTRACT

The nasolabial cyst is an uncommon non-odontogenic cyst that develops in the lower region of the nasal ala; its pathogenesis is uncertain. This lesion grows slowly and measures between 1.5 and 3 cm; it is characterized clinically by a floating tumefaction in the nasolabial sulcus, which elevates the upper lip. The diagnosis is based on the clinical findings and, if necessary, image exams. This paper reports a case of a white 48-year-old Brazilian female patient that presented a firm tumor in the left ala of the nose; the clinical features suggested a nasolabial cyst. CT scans revealed an expanding tumor with soft tissue density located in the left ala of the nose. It measured 1.2 cm in diameter and had a clear and well-defined outline; its homogeneous density was about 50 HU. MR images revealed a circular lesion located in soft tissue; T1 and T2 weighted signals were hyperintense, as were images after fat suppression. The diagnosis was a nasolabial cyst, which was confirmed by histopathology after surgery.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study was done (January 1992 - January 2002) to determine the prevalence of buccal cystic lesion in the patients attended in the Service of Bucco-Facial Maxillary Surgery of the University Hospital of Maracaibo, Venezuela. The population was conformed by all the people that received attendance in the Service and like sample the positive diagnoses of buccal cystic lesion. For the annotation of the information a Leaf of Registration of Data was used that allowed to obtain, among other, the following antecedents: age, sex, occupation, and the patient's geographical origin, diagnosis of the cystic lesion of the mouth, cyst type, localization and more affected area. The data were processed using a package statistical on-line denominated Statistic for Windows, and in the analysis a rate of 29.05 was identified by a thousand individuals with buccal cystic lesions during the period, as well as significant association between the age and the type of cyst buccal prevalence in the population and slight differences among the sexes with relationship to suffer or not the pathology. There was prevalence of the radicular apical cyst, followed by the dentígerous cyst, being located predominantly in the jaw and maxillary superior, being the affected areas the previous of the maxillary superior and later left of the jaw. The obtained results allow to conclude that the prevalence of buccal cystic lesions should be specified in the region to obtain its exact rate of expression and to carry out exams to the population that you/they allow to identify the signs and symptoms of the pathology precociously and to apply the necessary treatment.
