ABSTRACT

Women's participation in decision making involving health care promotion is a right that should be respected. This study aimed to better understand the need for care and the desire to participate in delivery decisions among pregnant women in Londrina, PR, Brazil. This study was based on social phenomenology. The pregnant women were interviewed from August to November, 2008. Statements from 14 pregnant women were analyzed and were divided into four categories: type of delivery preference; insecurity; the need for care; and decision-making in delivery. Results showed that although women expressed their needs and their wish to participate in the decisions regarding their delivery, they did not find favorable conditions so that their care needs and desire to participate in delivery decisions were made possible, a fact which interferes in face-to-face relationships and impedes the right to informed choices with respect to the delivery process.

ABSTRACT

Its goals: to identify the global capital of midwives, to analyze the opinions of nurses on the practice field obstetric hospital in the context of humanization movement, to discuss the changes seen by the midwives on the practice. I used as a method of oral history. The subjects were twenty-five nurses who experienced obstetric hospital in the field before and after the implementation of humanization movement. The scenarios were six maternity hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The technique of data collection was a semi-structured interview. In the light of historical perspective will perform data analysis, based on the assumptions of Pierre Bourdieu. The situation obstetric birth of the interviewees was the transition from home birth to hospital. The scene of childbirth for many of them was a public health institution or outsourced. The agents are from poor families, with little economic and cultural capital. It is emphasized that the conditions of capital accumulation of these nurses at the time were proportional to the opportunities they had in the social field they were in and the process of socialization. Some, after the undergraduate course in nursing have sought to acquire a specialization certificate, they increase the amount of capital and to legitimize the performance of normal delivery assistance. The political context where many have acquired the specialist title was the implementation of a humanized model in the field of obstetric Rio de Janeiro, favorable for the reduction of interventionist practices for women during childbirth to the promotion of normal birth focus on autonomy and female empowerment...

ABSTRACT

A descriptive exploratory study whose aim was to verify the quality of low-risk prenatal assistance in the city of Francisco Morato, based on indicators. The analysis observed the triad proposed by Donabedian9, (structure, process and outcome). Seventy-seven (77) puerperae were interviewed, the registries of the Pregnant Woman’s Card and the prenatal care records of those women were analyzed, and the physical structure of the Health Units was observed. Regarding the process indicators, none of the 9 analyzed Units achieved the desirable score (= or > 80%). The structure indicators showed that all the Units possess the minimum necessary material and equipment; nevertheless, none presented a documentation system nor carried out an active search of the pregnant women who failed to attend. The result indicators point out that the majority (79%) considered the service between good and excellent in regard to the assistance and 62.3% reported they were satisfied. It was concluded that for the quality improvement of prenatal assistance, it is essential that all professionals in the city’s Health Units take up continuing education courses.

ABSTRACT

This paper aimed at knowing the cultural caesarean representations present in magazines addressed to the laic public. One of the attributions of the nurse is health education. The press is source of informal education. So, the nurse must provide women with subsidies so that they can make decisions with autonomy and knowledge, demystifying or incrementing what is thought about the surgical delivery. Upon analyzing editions of Revista Crescer, two themes have arisen: the "said" and the "not said" about caesarean. Regarding the "said" category, the articles appraise pathologies in the gestation and their inter-occurrences with explicit association between pathologies and the caesarean; the magazine searched for the adequacy of the woman to the hospital routine and softened the caesarean consequences. As to the "not said" category, the magazine did not emphasize the control and prevention of the complications that are inherent to pregnancy and, somehow, led women to opt for the caesarean as the safest mode of delivery.
