ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: External occipital protuberance (EOP) is a midline bony protrusion in the occipital bone, the significance of which has gained recent attention in the medical community. Our present study aims to assess the average size of EOP in a Jordanian cohort and its relation to age and sex, while determining the frequency of enlarged EOP in this cohort. The present study was a cross-sectional study that was carried out in a referral hospital in Jordan. We reviewed thousands of CT scans taken with dedicated bone window imaging during the last two years, beginning January 2018. Measurements were taken by trained radiology residents and were then further reviewed by radiology specialists. An EOP was classified as enlarged (EEOP) if it exceeded 10 mm. A total of 4409 patients, 2265 (51.4 %) females and 2144 (48.6 %) males, met our inclusion criteria. Their mean age was 54.1 ? 22.2 years. The mean size of the EOP in these patients was 8.4 ? 4.2 mm (range: 0-56 mm). Out of the 4409-study population, 1210 (27.4 %) presented with EEOP. The prevalence of an EEOP was significantly higher in the male population (33.6 %) when compared with the female population (21.6 %) (P < 0.001). The size of the EOP was also significantly related to the age of the patient, with EEOP increasing with increasing age. The mean size of EOP in our Jordanian cohort was 8.4 ? 4.2 mm. The frequency of enlarged EOP was found to be 27.4 % in our cohort, and was significantly more common in males and in older patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the characteristics and variation of occipital protuberance and occipital bunning of Chinese Holocene population. Methods Based on 275 adult male skulls, Neolithic Age ( 49 cases ), Bronze and Iron Age (171 cases) and modern (55 cases), the occipital protuberance and occipital bunning were divided into several categories, and the occurrence rates were analyzed and compared among different time periods. Results The characteristics and variation of occipital protuberance and occipital bunning were also different in different ages. The degree of the occipital protuberance was more and more significant with the age, which changed greatly from Neolithic Age to Bronze and Iron Age. In the Holocene, most people did not appear occipital bunning on the skull, but the relatively significant occipital bunning appeared in the Bronze and Iron Age. Conclusion The variation of occipital protuberance may be related to the change of skull size and overuse of trapezius muscle in Holocene. The occipital bunning appearance may reflect the relative development speed of the brain and skull to some extent.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The posterior cranial fossa is the largest and the deepest of the three fossae. Contents of posterior cranial fossa include occipital part of cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. Variations in the volume of posterior cranial fossa may cause compression of these structures which may lead to various disorders. There is increasing evidence on the diagnostic potential of posterior cranial fossa measurements. The present study on morphometry of posterior cranial fossa based on CT images of patients without any clinical abnormality was undertaken for the first time in south Indian population. Subjects and Methods: To study and compare sex-wise and age-wise differences in the supratentorial and posterior cranial fossa (PF) measurements in the normal CT scan images of 62 males and 38 females who attended the Neurology department of SVIMS belonging to Rayalaseema region was undertaken. The measurements that were recorded are transverse diameter (TD) and anteroposterior diameter (APD) of supratentorial part and also posterior cranial fossa and height and volume of posterior cranial fossa. Results: The mean supratentorial TD and APD were found to be less in male but were not statistically significant sex-wise and age-wise. The mean posterior fossa APD was significant, PF height and volume were highly significantly in males. Discussion: There are no reports on supratentorial parameters in literature for comparing the results of present study. Except for one study on CT on height and volume of posterior cranial fossa there are no other studies for comparing the values of present study. Conclusion: Observations on supratentorial parameters of the present study are the first to be reported in literature.Age-wise and sex-wise observation of parameters of TD and APD of PF are the first to be reported in literature.

ABSTRACT

The most essential biological profiles in physical and forensic anthropology are age, sex, and populations to be determined. In case of dealing intact skeletons, experts can often determine sex with high accuracy. The external occipital protuberance (EOP) is one of the site among morphologic traits which is used to determine human sex. This study suggests the possibility to determine the sexual dimorphism using the EOP and surrounding anatomical structures in Koreans. After three-dimensional reconstruction of the skull model from Digital Korean Human Databse, the three parts were evaluated using a classification system based on Broca, Gulekon and Turgut. To determine for scoring, this study was used two in two different ways to observe the skull model; one was a lateral view and the other was turning the skull models. In a lateral view, the shape of the occipital area was classified as 'flat' or 'convex' type. After then the scores of the anatomical structures were converted into 4-digits code. In females, the skull was more convex in shape than males but the EOP and inion were lesser projection. In the lateral and turning views, the most common pattern was Type 2 in both sexes. The most common digit code was 2-2-2-0 in males, 2-2-2-1 in females. The digit code is better than simple scoring system for determining sex. The skull in Koreans were more feminine than in other populations in both sexes.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the development and shape of the occipital protuberance and its clinical significance with normal cranial CT scans. Methods 3000 cases of normal cranial CT images were selected. There were 1500 males and 1500 females, which were divided into nine age groups. The internal occipital protuberances were observed and measured on bone-window.Results The internal occipital protuberance was seen earlist at four-month-old-infant,and growth with age.The shape of the internal occipital protuberance was classified into four types:single-peak-type,plane-protusion-type,tropezoid-type and irregular-type.The single-peak-type was seen most commonly.Big semilunar depression of the internal occipital protuberance could be seen in patient with magna citern arachnoid cyst. Conclusion The height and shape of normal internal occipital protuberance have many diversities.Big semilunar depression of the internal protuberance is a important sign in diagnosis of magna cistern arachnoid cyst.
