ABSTRACT

The odor fingerprint of Pollygonati Rhizoma samples with different mildewing degrees was analyzed and the relationship between the odor variation and the mildewing degree was explored. A fast discriminant model was established according to the response intensity of electronic nose. The α-FOX3000 electronic nose was applied to analyze the odor fingerprint of Pollygonati Rhizoma samples with different mildewing degrees and the radar map was used to analyze the main contributors among the volatile organic compounds. The feature data were processed and analyzed by partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA), K-nearest neighbor(KNN), sequential minimal optimization(SMO), random forest(RF) and naive Bayes(NB), respectively. According to the radar map of the electronic nose, the response values of three sensors, namely T70/2, T30/1, and P10/2, increased with the mildewing, indicating that the Pollygonati Rhizoma produced alkanes and aromatic compounds after the mildewing. According to PLS-DA model, Pollygonati Rhizoma samples of three mildewing degrees could be well distinguished in three areas. Afterwards, the variable importance analysis of the sensors was carried out and then five sensors that contributed a lot to the classification were screened out: T70/2, T30/1, PA/2, P10/1 and P40/1. The classification accuracy of all the four models(KNN, SMO, RF, and NB) was above 90%, and KNN was most accurate(accuracy: 97.2%). Different volatile organic compounds were produced after the mildewing of Pollygonati Rhizoma, and they could be detected by electronic nose, which laid a foundation for the establishment of a rapid discrimination model for mildewed Pollygonati Rhizoma. This paper shed lights on further research on change pattern and quick detection of volatile organic compounds in moldy Chinese herbal medicines.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The drug use-results survey of Metronidazole gel (Rozex® gel 0.75%: hereinafter, this is called “this medicine”) was conducted for the purpose of assessing the safety and effectiveness of this medicine in clinical practice including long-term use. Methods: Patients who initiated treatment with this medicine for sterilization and reduction of odor at cancerous skin ulcer for the first time were registered by the central registration method. The longest period of observation was 1 year. Results: The safety analysis set included 301 patients. The incidence proportion of adverse drug reaction was 3.32% (in 10 of 301 patients), with no serious events. The overall improvement rate was 73.7% (in 205 of 278 patients). At the final observation, the improvement rate of odor by physician's assessment was 80.2% (in 203 of 253 patients) and the improvement rate of patient's satisfaction was 70.1% (in 82 of 117 patients), respectively. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that this medicine is safe and effective for sterilization and reduction of odor at cancerous skin ulcer, and leads to high treatment satisfaction of patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To analyze the odor composition changes of two kinds of traditional Chinese medicine sachet (children type and adults type) with different placement time by using ultra-fast gasphase electronic nose technology. METHODS The change rule of sachet components at different storage times was analyzed by gas chromatography. At the same time, the qualitative results were obtained by combining electronic nose with Arochembase database. Discriminant factor analysis was used to analyze the overall odor composition differences of the two sachet samples. RESULTS A total of 10 odor compositions were identified in children-type sachet, including α-pinene and β-pinene as the functional index compositions; five odor compositions of children-type sachet disappeared after 0.25 days, and most of them disappeared after 7 days; the cumulative contribution rate of discriminant factor analysis was 99.225%. A total of 8 odor compositions were identified in adult-type sachets, including α-pinene and α-phellandrene as the functional index compositions; four odor components disappeared after the adult-type sachet was placed for 0.25 days; after 15 days of placement, the peak 6-8 disappeared, and the intensity of peak 5 decreased by 34.3% compared with 0 day of placement; the cumulative contribution rate of discriminant factor analysis was 91.965%. CONCLUSIONS With the extension of storage time, the smell and composition of the two traditional Chinese medicine sachets are decreasing. It is recommended that the use time of children-type sachet is 7 days, and that of adult-type sachet is 15 days.

ABSTRACT

Since Curcumae Radix decoction pieces have multiple sources, it is difficult to distinguish depending on traditional cha-racters, and the mixed use of multi-source Curcumae Radix will affect its clinical efficacy. Heracles Neo ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose was used in this study to quickly identify and analyze the odor components of 40 batches of Curcumae Radix samples from Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Guangxi. Based on the odor fingerprints established for Curcumae Radix decoction pieces of multiple sources, the odor components was identified and analyzed, and the chromatographic peaks were processed and analyzed to establish a rapid identification method. Principal component analysis(PCA), discriminant factor analysis(DFA), and soft independent modeling cluster analysis(SIMCA) were constructed for verification. At the same time, one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) combined with variable importance in projection(VIP) was employed to screen out the odor components with P<0.05 and VIP>1, and 13 odor components such as β-caryophyllene and limonene were hypothesized as the odor differential markers of Curcumae Radix decoction pieces of diffe-rent sources. The results showed that Heracles Neo ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose can well analyze the odor characteristics and rapidly and accurately discriminate Curcumae Radix decoction pieces of different sources. It can be applied to the quality control(e.g., online detection) in the production of Curcumae Radix decoction pieces. This study provides a new method and idea for the rapid identification and quality control of Curcumae Radix decoction pieces.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: O captopril (CP) é o medicamento de escolha para o tratamento da hipertensão arterial. Sua degradação leva à formação do dímero dissulfeto de captopril (DSCP), este associado a um odor forte no medicamento, podendo causar abandono do tratamento pelo paciente. Objetivo: Determinar DCSP, associar a percepção olfativa de odor de enxofre desprendido do produto e realizar a avaliação de bula de comprimidos de captopril 25 mg distribuídos pelos setores público e privado. Método: Foi verificado o desempenho do método de determinação do CP e DSCP pela Farmacopeia Brasileira 6a ed. por HPLC (DAD). Foram analisados 13 produtos de comprimidos de captopril 25 mg, sendo dois provenientes do setor público de lotes diferentes e mesmo fabricante e 11 do setor privado de diferentes fabricantes e lotes. Foram avaliados aspectos do comprimido quanto à percepção de odor, determinação de peso, identificação e teor de CP e de DSCP e análise do conteúdo da bula. Resultados: Dentre os 13, o medicamento vencido apresentou 4,4% de DSCP, os demais estavam de acordo com a especificação. Verificouse  correspondência do odor de enxofre perceptível com teor de DSCP acima de 0,5%. Considerando os textos de bula sobre odor de enxofre, as constatações foram: nenhuma informação (três produtos), odor característico (dois), leve odor de enxofre (um), leve odor de enxofre sem diminuir a eficácia (sete). Conclusões: As amostras apresentaram resultados satisfatórios para os ensaios realizados. Verificou-se falta de homogeneidade nas informações das bulas sobre o odor dos comprimidos. A percepção do paciente quanto ao odor de enxofre, mesmo dentro do limite tolerado de DSCP, pode levar a não aceitação do medicamento e consequente não adesão ao tratamento da hipertensão, além de gerar prejuízos ao SUS.


Introduction: Captopril (CP) is the drug of choice for the treatment of hypertension. Its degradation leads to the formation of captopril disulfide dimer (DSCP), associated with a strong odor in the drug, which can cause the patient abandonment of treatment. Objective: To determine DCSP, associate the olfactory perception of the sulfur odor given off by the product and carry out the evaluation of the package insert for captopril 25 mg tablets distributed in the public and private sectors. Method: The performance of CP and DSCP determination method of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia 6 ed was verified by HPLC (DAD). Thirteen products of 25 mg captopril tablets were analyzed, 2 of which came from the public sector from different batches and the same manufacturer: the other 11 came from the private sector from different batches and manufacturers. The samples were analyzed regarding appearance, odor perception, identification, weight determination, CP and DSCP content (by HPLC) and package insert content. Results: Among the 13, the expired drug had 4.4% DSCP; the others were in accordance with the specification. Correspondence of perceptible sulfur odor was established for drugs with DSCP content above 0.5%. Considering the texts on sulfur odor in the package inserts, the findings were: none information (3 products), characteristic odor (2), slight sulfur odor (1), slight sulfur odor without decreasing effectiveness (7). Conclusions: The samples showed satisfactory results for the tests performed. There was a lack of homogeneity in the information in the package inserts about odor of the tablets. The patient's perception of sulfur odor, even within the tolerated limit of DSCP, can lead to non-acceptance of the drug and consequent non- adherence to the treatment of hypertension, in addition to causing damage to the SUS.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluate the effect of essential oil in odor reduction for intestinal ostomy bags. Method: Primary study, semi-experimental, prospective clinical trial with quantitative approach. A product prepared with Melaleuca armillaris leaves was tested in ostomy pouches, with and without effluents, for adhesion and odor control. Instrument: Labeled Magnitude Scale. Results: Colostomized participants, with a mean age of 73 ± 14.94, predominantly males; and informal caregivers, with a mean age of 44 ± 8.98, predominantly females. In the visual evaluation of the oil, 100% of the participants perceived its adherence. Regarding the evaluation of effluent odor by the colostomized, five reported "strong odor" before oil use and, six reported "weak" odor after use (p = 0.005). Five informal caregivers reported "very strong" effluent odor before oil use; and one reported "weak" and nine reported "moderate" after use (p = 0.0025). Conclusion: There was a reduction in the odor of effluents in the ostomy pouches with the essential oil of Melaleuca armillaris at 10%. Método: Estudio primario, ensayo clínico cuasi-experimental, prospectivo de tipo cuantitativo. Se evaluó un preparado con hojas de Melaleuca armillaris, probado en bolsas de recogida con y sin efluentes, en cuanto a adherencia y olor. Se aplicó como instrumento la Escala de Magnitud Etiquetada. Resultados: Los participantes colostomizados tenían edad media de 73 años ± 14,94, con predominio del sexo masculino, y los cuidadores informales, edad media de 44 años ± 8,98 y prevalencia mayor para el sexo femenino. En la evaluación visual del aceite, el 100% de los participantes notaron la adherencia. Respecto a la evaluación del olor del efluente por los pacientes colostomizados, cinco reportaron sentir un "olor fuerte" antes de usar el aceite y, después del uso, seis reportaron sentir un olor "débil" (p = 0,005). Cinco cuidadores informales detectaron un olor "muy fuerte" de los efluentes antes de usar el aceite y, después de usarlo, uno sintió un olor "débil" y nueve "moderado" (p = 0,0025). Conclusión: El olor de los efluentes en las bolsas de recolección con el aceite esencial de Melaleuca armillaris se redujo en un 10%. Solicitud de registro de patente ante el INPI bajo el n. Resultados: Participantes colostomizados, com média de 73 anos ± 14,94, predomínio do sexo masculino; e cuidadores informais, com média de 44 anos ± 8,98, predomínio do sexo feminino. Na avaliação visual do óleo, 100% dos participantes perceberam a aderência. Em relação à avaliação do odor dos efluentes pelos colostomizados, cinco relataram "odor forte" antes do uso do óleo e, após o uso, seis relataram odor "fraco" (p = 0,005). Cinco cuidadores informais detectaram odor "muito forte" dos efluentes antes do uso do óleo e, após o uso, um "fraco" e nove "moderado" (p = 0,0025). ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To establish the method for monitoring the dynamic changes of odor components in Cornus officinalis during processing . METHODS The decoction pieces of C. officinalis with different processing time were prepared by the wine steaming method . The dynamic changes of odor components were obtained by using ultra -fast gas electronic nose ;odor components were identified by comparing with AroChemBase database ;the dynamic changes of odor compounds were analyzed in combination with peak area ,and the chemical pattern recognition analysis were carried out . RESULTS A total of 12 common peaks of odor components were identified in the fingerprints of raw C. officinalis,and 21 in the fingerprints of decoction pieces of C. officinalis. Eight odor components with the high proportion of peak area during processing were ethanol , isopropyl alcohol , 2- methylpropylaldehyde,ethyl acetate ,2-methylbutanal,isoamyl alcohol ,2-hexanol and furfural ,among which ,the peak areas of ethanol,isoamyl alcohol and 2-hexanol showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing ;at 24 h of processing ,their peak areas were still higher than those of raw products . The peak areas of ethyl acetate ,2-methylbutanal and furfural nearly increased with the increase of processing time . Variable importance in projection of above eight odor components were all greater than 1. CONCLUSIONS The method is established for monitoring the dynamic changes of odor components of C. officinalis during processing. Eight odor components such as ethanol can be used as monitoring indicators of C. officinalis dring processing .

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveOn the basis of sensory evaluation, the changes of volatile components in gecko before and after processing were compared, and the odor correction effect of different processing methods of gecko was discussed. MethodRaw products, fried yellow products, vinegar processed products, wine processed products, talcum powder scalding products and white wine sprayed products after scalding talcum powder of gecko were prepared, and 10 odor assessors were invited to evaluate the 6 samples in turn by sensory evaluation. Headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and relative odor activity value (ROAV) were used to analyze the key odor components, and multivariate statistical methods were used to analyze the difference of volatile components between raw and processed products of gecko. Taking water-soluble extract and protein contents as internal indicators, sensory evaluation score and content ranking of differential components as external indicators, and assigning a weight of 0.25 to them respectively, the comprehensive scores of raw products and processed products of gecko were calculated to evaluate the odor correction effect of each processing method. ResultThe average sensory evaluation scores of the raw products, fried yellow products, vinegar processed products, wine processed products, talcum powder scalding products and white wine sprayed products after scalding talcum powder of gecko were 1.6, 5.2, 6.2, 6.1, 7.2 and 8.0, respectively. ROAV results showed that key components affecting odor of gecko were 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine, isovaleraldehyde, trimethylamine, 1-octen-3-ol, n-octanal, nonanal, 2-methylnaphthalene, γ-octanolide, 2-heptanone and phenol. Principal component analysis (PCA) significantly distinguished raw products from processed products. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) results showed that there were 16, 13, 16, 16, 16 differential components between raw products, fried yellow products, vinegar processed products, wine processed products, talcum powder scalding products and white wine sprayed products after scalding talcum powder of gecko. Among these differential components, there were 4 common components, namely, the contents of different odor components (2-methylnaphthalene and 2-ethyl-p-xylene) decreased, while the contents of different flavor components (2-decanone and 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine) increased. The comprehensive scoring results showed that the odor correction effect of each processed products was in the order of talcum powder scalding products>wine processed products>vinegar processed products>fried yellow products>white wine sprayed products after scalding talcum powder. ConclusionTalcum powder scalding is a better method to improve the odor of gecko, and it can provide an experimental basis for the processing of gecko to correct the odor.

Objetivo: Construir e obter a evidência de validade de conteúdo da Escala de Avaliação do Odor de Feridas Neoplásicas. Método: Estudo conduzido em 2019 em duas etapas: construção da escala a partir de revisão de literatura e validação a partir da avaliação de 17 juízes que responderam a um questionário por meio de ferramenta online. Foi aplicado o cálculo de índice de Validade de Conteúdo (IVC) para a análise dos dados. Resultados: As principais mudanças indicadas foram: retirada do swab para avaliar a carga microbiana e a inclusão do exsudato sanguinolento como item relevante na avaliação do odor. O IVC da escala foi de 0,91, indicando que 91% dos juízes consideraram a escala um instrumento relevante para avaliar o odor das feridas neoplásicas. Conclusão: A escala desenvolvida foi aprovada como instrumento de análise clínica que poderá auxiliar os profissionais na avaliação mais consistente do odor das feridas neoplásicas.(AU)


Objective: To build and obtain evidence of content validity of the Neoplastic Wound Odor Rating Scale. Materials and method: Two-step study: construction of the scale based on a literature review and validation based on the evaluation of 17 judges who answered a questionnaire through an online tool. The Content Validity Index (CVI) calculation was applied for data analysis. Results: The main changes indicated were: removal of the swab to assess the microbial load and the inclusion of bloody exudate as a relevant item in the odor assessment. The scale's CVI was 0.91, indicating that 91% of the judges considered the scale a relevant instrument to assess the odor of neoplastic wounds. Conclusion: The developed scale was approved as a clinical analysis instrument that can help professionals to more consistently assess the odor of neoplastic wounds.(AU)

Materiales y método: Estudio de dos pasos: construcción de la escala a partir de una revisión de la literatura y validación a partir de la evaluación de 17 jueces que respondieron un cuestionario a través de una herramienta online. Se aplicó el cálculo del Índice de Validez de Contenido (IVC) para el análisis de datos. Resultados: Los principales cambios indicados fueron: extracción del hisopo para evaluar la carga microbiana y la inclusión de exudado sanguinolento como elemento relevante en la evaluación de olores. El CVI de la escala fue de 0,91, lo que indica que el 91% de los jueces consideró la escala un instrumento relevante para evaluar el olor de las heridas neoplásicas. Conclusión: La escala desarrollada fue aprobada como un instrumento de análisis clínico que puede ayudar a los profesionales a evaluar de manera más consistente el olor de las heridas neoplásicas.(AU)

Objective:To establish and apply a new practical analytical method for identifying the fishy odor of Cordyceps based on headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-QQQ-MS/MS) technique. Method:The InertCap Pure-WAX capillary column (0.25 mm×30 m, 0.25 μm) was used for chromatographic separation. The injection port temperature was set at 250 ℃. The injection mode was split injection with a ratio of 5∶1. High purity helium was used as the carrier gas and control mode was set to constant pressure. The column flow rate was 1.43 mL∙min<sup>-1</sup>, the linear velocity was 43.3 cm∙s<sup>-1</sup>, and the purge flow rate was 3.0 mL∙min<sup>-1</sup>. The chromatographic column temperature program as follows:maintained the initial temperature at 50 ℃ for 5 min, and increased the temperature at a rate of 10 ℃∙min<sup>-1</sup> to 250 ℃, held for 10 min. The column equilibrium time was 2.0 min. The ion source of mass spectrographic analysis was electron ionization with ion source temperature of 200 ℃, and the monitoring mode was set to multiple reaction monitoring. Result:Seven batches of Cordyceps samples were collected, including 3 batches from Sichuan, 3 batches from Qinghai and 1 batch from Tibet. There were six batches of counterfeits, including 3 batches from Sichuan, 2 batches from Guizhou and 1 batch in Xinjiang. A total of 81 volatile compounds were screened out in Cordyceps, which could be divided into 13 types (esters, ketones, aldehydes and others) according to the compound structure, indicating that the fishy odor of Cordyceps was a complex odor. There was no significant difference in the types of volatile compounds of Cordyceps from different regions, which suggested that these volatile compounds in Cordyceps produced in Tibet (Naqu), Qinghai (Yushu and Guoluo) and Sichuan (Litang, Rangtang and Seda) were relatively consistent. However, the contents of some volatile compounds in Cordyceps produced in different regions were quite different, and 16 volatile compounds with significant difference were screened out, including 1-methoxy-2-propyl acetate, <italic>γ</italic>-octalactone, hexyl acetate and others, those compounds maybe could been used as the quality markers for identification of regions of Cordyceps. There was a large difference in volatile compounds between Cordyceps and its counterfeits, and 34 volatile compounds were screened out, including ethyl acetate, acetophenone, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and others, those compounds maybe could been used as the quality markers for authenticity identification of Cordyceps. Conclusion:In summary, the established method for identifying the fishy odor of Cordyceps in this paper has the characteristics of high sensitivity, accuracy and simplicity, which can provide reference for the analysis of volatile compounds in other Chinese herbal medicines.

ABSTRACT

This study adopted headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(HS-GC-MS) and electronic nose to detect volatile components from Myristicae Semen samples with varying degrees of mildew, aiming at rapidly identifying odor changes and substance basis of Myristicae Semen mildew. The experimental data were analyzed by electronic nose and principal component analysis(PCA). The results showed that Myristicae Semen samples were divided into the following three categories by electronic nose and PCA: mildew-free samples, slightly mildewy samples, and mildewy samples. Myristicae Semen samples with different degrees of mildew greatly varied in volatile components. The volatile components in the samples were qualitatively and quantitatively detected by HS-GC-MS, and 59 compounds were obtained. There were significant differences in the composition and content in Myristicae Semen samples with different degrees of mildew. The PCA results were the same as those by electronic nose. Among them, 3-crene, D-limonene, and other terpenes were important indicators for the identification of mildew. Bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane, 4-methylene-1-(1-methylethyl)-, terpinen-4-ol, and other alcohols were key substances to distinguish the degree of mildew. In the later stage of mildew, Myristicae Semen produced a small amount of hydroxyl and aldehyde compounds such as acetaldehyde, 2-methyl-propionaldehyde, 2-methyl-butyraldehyde, and formic acid, which were deduced as the material basis of the mildew. The results are expected to provide a basis for the rapid identification of Myristicae Semen with different degrees of mildew, odor changes, and the substance basis of mildew.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to develop a simple, rapid and reliable method for identifying Armeniacae Semen Amarum from different processed products and various rancidness degrees. The objective odor information of Armeniacae Semen Amarum was obtained by electronic nose. 105 batches of Armeniacae Semen Amarum samples were studied, including three processed products of Armeniacae Semen Amarum, fried Armeniacae Semen Amarum and peeled Armeniacae Semen Amarum, as well as the samples with various rancidness degrees: without rancidness, slight rancidness, and rancidness. The discriminant models of different processed products and rancidness degrees of Armeniacae Semen Amarum were established by Support Vector Machine(SVM), respectively, and the models were verified based on back estimation of blind samples. The results showed that there were differences in the characteristic response radar patterns of the sensor array of different processed products and the samples with different rancidness degrees. The initial identification rate was 95.90% and 92.45%, whilst validation recognition rate was 95.38% and 91.08% in SVM identification models. In conclusion, differentiation in odor of different processed and rancidness degree Armeniacae Semen Amarum was performed by the electronic nose technology, and different processed and rancidness degrees Armeniacae Semen Amarum were successfully discriminated by combining with SVM. This research provides ideas and methods for objective identification of odor of traditional Chinese medicine, conducive to the inheritance and development of traditional experience in odor identification.

ABSTRACT

The olfactory bulb (OB) is the first relay station in the olfactory system. In the OB, mitral/tufted cells (M/Ts), which are the main output neurons, play important roles in the processing and representation of odor information. Recent studies focusing on the function of M/Ts at the single-cell level in awake behaving mice have demonstrated that odor-evoked firing of single M/Ts displays transient/long-term plasticity during learning. Here, we tested whether the neural activity of M/Ts and sniffing patterns are dependent on anticipation and reward in awake behaving mice. We used an odor discrimination task combined with in vivo electrophysiological recordings in awake, head-fixed mice, and found that, while learning induced plasticity of spikes and beta oscillations during odor sampling, we also found plasticity of spikes, beta oscillation, sniffing pattern, and coherence between sniffing and theta oscillations during the periods of anticipation and/or reward. These results indicate that the activity of M/Ts plays important roles not only in odor representation but also in salience-related events such as anticipation and reward.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze and compare the fishy components in raw, stir-fried, liquorice-processed, vinegar-processed and wine-processed products of Pheretima aspergillum, and explore the material basis and processing principle of fishy smell of P. aspergillum. Method:Heracles Ⅱ ultra-fasted gas chromatography electronic nose technology combined with chemometrics was used for the overall analysis of volatile components in raw P. aspergillum and its processed products. Headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) was used to analyze and identify the volatile compositions in the raw products and processed products. Gas chromatographic conditions were as following:temperature program (initial temperature at 60 ℃, kept for 5 min, up to 120 ℃ with the heating rate of 3 ℃·min-1, and then up to 230 ℃ with the heating rate of 10 ℃·min-1 and finished), the inlet temperature at 280 ℃, high purity helium as the carrier gas, the flow rate of 1.0 mL·min-1, the split ratio of 20∶1. Mass spectrum conditions were as following:electron impact ionization (EI), electron collision energy of 70 eV, ion source temperature of 230 ℃, quadrupole temperature at 150 ℃, scanning range of m/z 50-550. The relative content of each component was calculated by peak area normalization. Result:Principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant factor analysis (DFA) of the electronic nose showed that the raw products and its processed products could be clearly distinguished from each other. Among them, the difference between raw products and stir-fried, liquorice-processed products was small, but the difference between raw products and vinegar-processed, wine-processed products was large. A total of 25, 27, 22, 26 and 33 components were respectively identified from raw, stir-fried, liquorice-processed, vinegar-processed and wine-processed products of P. aspergillum, there were 13 common components in these products, including 4 aldehydes (isovaleraldehyde, 2-methylbutyraldehyde, hexanal, benzaldehyde), 2 ketones (2-heptanone, 2-tridecanone), 1 carboxylic acid (lauric acid), 4 heterocyclic compounds (2-methylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, 2-pentylfuran, 2-ethyl-6-methyl pyrazine), 1 amine (trimethylamine) and 1 alcohol (1-octen-3-ol). Conclusion:The odorous components in the raw products are mainly derived from aldehydes (isovaleraldehyde, 2-methylbutyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, 2-ethylhexanal, hexanal) and amines (trimethylamine). Odorous components of P. aspergillum can be reduced effectively by stir-fried and liquorice, vinegar, wine processing, while flavoring substances can be increased by wine processing to cover its ugly odor. This paper can provide scientific basis for the deodorization of P. aspergillum by processing, and also provide reference for the analysis and correction of ugly odor of other animal medicines.

Spirulina (Athrospira platensis) is very rich in protein, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals and its incorporation into foods will enrich their nutritional values. The objectives of this study were to incorporate spirulina into traditional Egyptian cookies as a source of natural bioactive molecules and to evaluate the effect of the amount of added spirulina on their sensory properties (texture, shred, color, odor and taste) and acceptability using a panel of 10 members. The results indicated that addition of spirulina to the cookies affected the texture, the mouth feel, the easiness with which breaking a cookie was made, the fragmentation and the appearance of the break line. The cookies that received no spirulina had smoother texture and moist-smooth mouth feel whereas those received spirulina had more sandy-course texture and heavy-chewy mouth feel. Increasing spirulina content from 5 to 15% made the cookies more firm and harder to break. Irregular large parts and continuous break lines were observed with the cookies that received no spirulina while more granules and smaller parts with irregular line were observed with all the cookies that received spirulina. The results showed that adding spirulina to cookies may help maintain their integrity and reduce breakage during packaging and distributions. The color of the cookies that received no spirulina was yellow to yellow-orange and that of the cookies that received 5 and 10% spirulina was yellow- green to green-yellow-green while that of the cookies received 15% spirulina was green-yellow-green to green-blue-green. All the baked cookies had a noticeable smell and the odor intensity ranged from faint to strong. Increasing the spirulina content from 5 to 15% (3-fold) increased the odor intensity by 19.6%. The nature of the smell of the cookies that received 0 and 5% spirulina was pleasant while that of the cookies that revived 10 and 15% spirulina was musty-seawater and fishy-seawater, respectively. The addition of spirulina affected both the taste and the degree of acceptance. The taste of the cookies that received no spirulina was sweet-delicious with a high degree of acceptance while the taste of the cookies that received spirulina varied from sweet-sour to bitter-fishy with lower degree of acceptance. Adding 5% spirulina did not affect the smell or the taste. However, addition of a flavoring agent to cookies having higher spirulina contents (10-15%) may be required to musk the smell and taste of spirulina. The results showed that addition of spirulina enhanced the nutritional value of the cookies by increasing the protein content of the cookies and enriching them with vitamins, mineral, omega fatty acids and amino acids, all of which have significant health benefits to school children. Therefore, a further work should be directed towards improving the smell and the taste of spirulina cookies.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to identify four commonly applied herbs from Curcuma genus of Zingiberaceae family,namely Curcumae Radix( Yujin),Curcumae Rhizoma( Ezhu),Curcumae Longae Rhizoma( Jianghuang) and Wenyujin Rhizoma Concisum( Pianjianghuang). The odor fingerprints of those four herbal medicines were collected by electronic nose,respectively. Meanwhile,XGBoost algorithm was introduced to data analysis and discriminant model establishment,with four indexes for performance evaluation,including accuracy,precision,recall,and F-measure. The discriminant model was established by XGBoost with positive rate of returning to 166 samples in the training set and 69 samples in the test set were 99. 39% and 95. 65%,respectively. The top four of the contribution to the discriminant model were LY2/g CT,P40/1,LY2/Gh and LY2/LG,the least contributing sensor was T70/2. Compared with support vector machine,random forest and artificial neural network,XGBoost algorithms shows better identification capacity with higher recognition efficiency. The accuracy,precision,recall and F-measure of the XGBoost discriminant model forecast set were 95. 65%,95. 25%,93. 07%,93. 75%,respectively. The superiority of XGBoost in the identification of Curcuma herbs was verified. Obviously,this new method could not only be suitable for digitization and objectification of traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) odor indicators,but also achieve the identification of different TCM based on their odor fingerprint in electronic nose system. The introduction of XGBoost algorithm and more excellent algorithms provide more ideas for the application of electronic nose in data mining for TCM studies.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the odorous components and their contents in raw products, wine-processed products, vinegar-processed products and wheat bran-processed products of Periplaneta americana. Method:Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was used to extract the volatile components from different processed products, the chemical compositions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the relative contents of each component was calculated by peak area normalization method. Result:A total of 41, 32, 40 and 47 components were respectively identified from raw, wine-processed, vinegar-processed and wheat bran-processed products of P. americana, involving a total of 13 common components. Conclusion:The odorous components in the raw products are mainly derived from aldehydes, alcohols, amines, hydrocarbons and other volatile substances. Odorous components can be reduced effectively and flavoring substances can be increased by wine, vinegar and wheat bran processing. This study provides a scientific basis for the further study of correcting odor of P. americana, it also provides a reference for analysis and correction of odor of animal medicines.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To establish an odor fingerprint with electronic nose technology to qualitatively identify Aucklandiae Radix odor from different producing areas. Methods: Eight batches of Aucklandiae Radix samples from eight different producing areas were collected. The odor information of each sample was obtained by electronic nose. The LDA algorithm based on Fisher’s identification criterion and the nonlinear dimensionality reduction LLE + SMA algorithm were used to distinguish the Aucklandiae Radix odor of different origins. Results: It was found that the LDA algorithm based on Fisher’s discriminant criterion could not distinguish the Aucklandiae Radix scent of different producing areas. Some of the samples in the place of origin had a lot of overlap, and the LLE + SMA algorithm could distinguish the odor very well. It can completely distinguish eight batches of Aucklandiae Radix samples from eight different producing areas. Conclusion: It is feasible to apply the electronic nose technology to the odor differentiation of Aucklandiae Radix from different producing areas, and provide new ideas and methods for the quality evaluation of Aucklandiae Radix.

BACKGROUND@#Chemical intolerance (CI) is a chronic condition characterized by recurring and severe symptoms triggered by exposure to low levels of odorous or pungent substances. The etiology of CI has been a controversial subject for a long time. The aim of this review is to summarize findings on the neurological processing of sensory information during and after exposure to low levels of odorous or pungent substances in individuals with CI, focusing on the brain function and networks.@*METHODS@#Scientific studies on CI published between 2000 and 2019 in academic peer-reviewed journals were systematically searched using medical and scientific literature databases. Only peer-reviewed articles reporting original research from experimental human studies directly associated with CI, and involving related neurological responses or brain imaging after exposure to odorous or pungent substances (i.e., in chemical provocation tests), were considered.@*RESULTS@#Forty-seven studies were found to be eligible for a full-text review. Twenty-three studies met the selection criteria and were included in this review. Evidence indicated that differences between subjects with CI and healthy controls were observed by brain imaging during and after exposure to odorous or pungent substances. Differences in brain imaging were also observed between initial exposure and after exposure to these substances. Neurological processing of sensory information after exposure to extrinsic stimuli in the limbic system and related cortices were altered in subjects with CI. A previous documentable exposure event was likely to be involved in this alteration.@*CONCLUSIONS@#This review documents consistent evidence for the altered neurological processing of sensory information in individuals with CI. Further neurophysiological research exploring the processing of extrinsic stimuli and cognition of sensation through the limbic system and related cortices in CI, and the appearance of symptoms in individuals with CI, are required.
