ABSTRACT

Objective@#To compile and evaluate the questionnaire of knowledge, belief and practice of perioperative nurses in the prevention of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in order to provide a tool for further investigation of the status quo of nursing care in the prevention of DVT during perioperative period.@*Methods@#Based on the theoretical model of knowledge, belief and practice, a questionnaire item pool was established by literature reading and semi-structured interviews, and an initial questionnaire was formed by Delphi expert inquiry. It was convenient to select 197 nurses engaged in surgery and operating room nursing in Qingdao Municipal Hospital Affiliated to Qingdao University to carry out the pre questionnaire, and to carry out the differentiation levels, relevance coefficient analysis and reliability and validity test were used to form a formal questionnaire.@*Results@#After two rounds of Delphi expert inquiries, three items with lower assignment value and four items with modified contents were deleted to form the initial questionnaire. The positive coefficients of experts in two rounds of inquiry were 85.00% and 100.00%, respectively; the Kendall's harmonious coefficients of experts were 0.195 and 0.204 (P<0.01); and the authoritative coefficients of experts were 0.836 and 0.849. Four items were deleted from 197 pre-survey questionnaires by discriminatory analysis, correlation coefficient analysis and reliability and validity test. The Item Level Validity (I-CVI) of the total questionnaire was 0.800-1.000, and the Scale Level Validity (S-CVI) was 0.825. In the structural validity analysis, the KMO value of each item was 0.824, the Bartlett spherical test value was 3170.304, P < 0.01. Twelve common factors with eigenvalues greater than 1 were extracted, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 66.11%. The intrinsic consistency Cronbach a coefficient of the total questionnaire was 0.859, and the retest reliability was 0.706. Finally, a formal questionnaire with 40 items in 15 knowledge dimensions, 10 belief dimensions and 15 behavior dimensions was formed.@*Conclusion@#The reliability and validity of the questionnaire are well evaluated, and it can be used as a tool for investigating the knowledge, belief and practice of perioperative nurses in preventing deep venous thrombosis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the fatigue of operating room nurses and examine factors contributing to their fatigue. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 115 nurses who worked in operating rooms of three hospitals. Data were collected from September 15, 2009 to September 30, 2009. Fatigue and job stress were measured by using the Symptom's Fatigue Scale and the job stress measurement tools in operating room nurses. RESULTS: The mean score of fatigue level was 3.10+/-0.61. We analyzed fatigue according to characteristics of subjects and found that there were significant differences in marital status, number of children and sleeping hours in general characteristics. Career, daily participation hours in the surgery relating to job related characteristics. Significant positive correlations were found between job stress and fatigue(r=.233, p=.012). Three significant variables influencing fatigue of operation rooms nurses were job stress, daily participation hours in the surgery, and sleeping hours (Adj. R2=0.284, F=4.773, p<.001). CONCLUSION: An integrative care program that takes job stress, daily participation hours in the surgery and sleeping hours into consideration is essential to reduce fatigue in operating room nurses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To find the factors of subjective musculoskeletal symptoms associated with the general characteristics and tasks of operating room nurses (OR nurses) and then to use the factors as basic information for preventing and managing musculoskeletal symptoms in OR nurses. METHOD: This study was an exploratory research. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from OR nurses working at 8 polyclinics in Korea during the period from July 26 2004 to August 19 2004. The questionnaire contains 7 questions on general characteristics and 18 questions on tasks in the operating room. RESULT: 187 (75.1%) nurses said they 'had' subjective musculoskeletal symptoms. Statistically significant differences were observed according to clinical career, career as an OR nurse, skillfulness, satisfaction with tasks in the operating room, perception on suitable treatment, care of symptoms by the hospital. weight of hospital linen and weight of a basic operation set (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Musculoskeletal symptoms complained of by OR nurses were significant. This may cause difficulties in nursing tasks in the operating room. Thus, various arrangements should be made for OR nurse with subjective musculoskeletal symptoms at the early stage.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Allergy to natural rubber latex has become an important occupational health concern in recent years, particularly among health care workers. Studies have estimated that the prevalence of latex allergy ranged from 2.8% up to 12.1% of health care workers. Latex sensitization is more common in operating rooms or with special care nurses whose jobs require frequent glove use. OBJECT: The present study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of latex sensitivity in operating room nurses, and to evaluate the relationship between questionnaire responses and skin tests. METHODS: Eighty operating room nurses working in the Hallym Medical Center and 27 healthy controls were included in this study. The questionnaire was completed by a dermatology doctor during an interview. Skin prick tests(SPT) were carried out on the volar surface of the forearm using latex glove extract solution, commercial latex extract and several commercial fruit extracts. If SPT was positive, use test was performed. Patch tests for delayed type hypersensitivity were carried out with small piece of latex glove(as is), commercial latex antigen and rubber additives. RESULTS: 1. Twenty two(27.5%) of 80 operating room nurses reported at least one symptom when wearing gloves. Although the symptom development was increased as glove-wearing time increased, but the difference was not statistically significant. The history of atopy and dental care did not influence the prevalence of symptoms. Subjects with hand eczema had significantly higher prevalence of symptoms than without hand eczema. 2. In SPT, 9(11.3%) of 80 operating room nurses were positive to latex glove extract solution. This level was significantly higher than healthy controls who showed positive reaction in only one. The history of hand eczema and dental care did not influence the prevalence of symptoms. Although the difference was not statistically significant, the symptom development was increased as glove-wearing time and years of experience increased. The percentage of skin reactions to latex was 2.6 times higher in nurses with atopy than without atopy, but the difference was not statistically significant. Reactions to fruit extracts including tomato, banana, mixed nut and potato were 5.0%, 3.8%, 2.5% and 1.3%, respectively. Use test was done with 7 of 9 showing positive reaction to SPT, and all of them showed positive responses. 3. Patch tests revealed positive results for latex gloves in 3 (3.8%), for commercial latex extract in 2 (2.5%) and for thiuram mix in 1 (1.3%) of 80 operating room nurses. But there were no positive results with ZnBDC, ZnEDC, TMTD, mercapto mix and mercaptobenzothiazole in nurses. For all allergens in patch test, any healthy subjects did not show positive results. CONCLUSION: Twenty two(27.5%) of 80 operating room nurses reported at least one symptom when wearing gloves. The most commonl compained symptom was itching, which was ceported in all of them. Localized wheal, generalized wheal and pain were reported in 8.8%, 5.0% and 2.5%, respectively. However, anaphylaxis was not reported. As the positive rate was 3.8% in patch test and 11.3% in SPT using latex glove extract, most of the symptoms related to the wearing of latex gloves appeared to be due to irritation. It could be considered that latex allergy could be induced by repeated wearing of latex gloves in operating room nurses.
