ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the effect of frequently used Duraphaton preventing dental demineralization of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. @*Methods@# A total of 50 orthodontic patients wearing fixed appliances at Department of orthodontics, Affiliated Stomatological Hospital, Nanjing Medical University from June to December 2021 were selected as study subjects by convenient sampling method. They were then randomly divided into experimental group and control group according to random numbers. The experimental group received high-frequency fluoride treatment for unilateral maxillary lateral incisors and no treatment on the contralateral side. Meanwhile, the control group received placebo treatment for unilateral maxillary lateral incisors and no treatment on the contralateral side. Each patient was followed up for 6 months. The initial and final photographs of patients' maxillary lateral incisors were observed and scored to determine the mean demineralization progression index for each group.@*Results@#The difference in mean demineralization progression index was statistically significant when comparing different groups(P<0.05), and the lowest incidence of demineralization was reported in the Duraphattreated group (0.960±0.465), followed respectively by the fluoride-free control group (1.213±0.713), the placebo control group (1.267±0.720) and the placebo treatment group (1.307±0.713). @*Conclusion@#High frequency use of Duraphatis is effective in reducing the incidence of demineralization in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.

ABSTRACT

Cooperation of the patients in orthodontic treatment is an essential element. This study examines the internal and external restriction factors and level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment of adolescent orthodontic treatment patients, and the factors that impart influence on the level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment. ‘Form for students’ among the indices of internal and external restrictions for orthodontics, which is an adaption of ‘Orthodontic Locus of Control Scale’ was used as survey tool, and ‘Reliability and Stability of the Orthodontic Patient Cooperation Scale’ was used as survey tool for the level of cooperation of orthodontic patients. As the result of examination of the effect of internal and external restriction factors on level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment by compensating the general characteristics in the multiple regression analysis, it was found that the level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment is higher for the patients who believe there is strong influence of external restrictions–patents–on the events that determines orthodontic treatment. In order to enhance the level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment of adolescent orthodontic patients, there is a need to assess the relationship between the patient and parents as well as the attitude or psychological state of the patients on orthodontic treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the effectiveness of cognitive therapy on orthodontic patients with body image disturbance (BID).Methods 21 orthodontic patients with BID in study group re ceived routine orthopedic treatment and cognitive therapy, and 15 orthodontic patients with BID in control group received only routine orthopedic treatment. All patients were tested with Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90),Cognitive Bias Questionnaire (CBQ),Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS),Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS),and Body Image Questionnaire (BIQ) at prior and post treatment. Results SAS and SDS scores in the study group were decreased after treatment, and SDS decrease in the study group was larger than that in control group. The factor scores of both groups on the SCL- 90were decreased after treatment, and most factor scores decrease in study group was larger than that in control group.Three dimensions (except for function impairment) of the BIQ were improved in the study group as compared with control group.Cognitive styles were improved on the study group as compared with control group. Conclusions The cognitive therapy can improve cognitive bias and mental health of patients with BID.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect a chewable tablet containing sodium fluoride and xylitol (DenPo, Hamizzle, Bucheon, Kyungki) on the oral hygiene state in the orthodontic patients. The subjects consisted of 30 adult orthodontic patients, who have worn the fixed orthodontic appliance at least 6 months. They were instructed to use the tablet forth a day. Gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and sulcus bleeding index (SBI) of upper and lower anterior and posterior regions were measured before using the tablet (T0), 2 weeks after using the tablet (T1), and 4 weeks after using the tablet (T2). The data were analyzed with Wilcoxon signed ranks tests. The results were as follows ; 1. PI was decreased significantly in the T1 and T2 stage compared with T0 stage in the both anterior and posterior regions (p 0.05). 2. GI and SBI showed similar results compared with PI. In the T1 and T2 stage, there was statistically significant decrease in the GI and SBI (p < 0.05). This study showed that the DenPo tablet could be used as an adjunct to improve oral hygiene in the orthodontic patients. The decrease of the indices may suggest that DenPo tablet could be effective in the plaque removal and prevention of gingival inflammation in the orthodontic patients.
