ABSTRACT

The plants of genus osmunda have abundant germplasm resource, which are widely distributed in the world. They have long been used for the treatment of viral, fugal and inflammation diseases. These plants have broad bioactivities and contain various chemical constituents such as flavonoids, esters and steroids. They also have high nutrition value, food value and ornamental value with composition of protein, lipids, carbohydrates, cellulose and trace elements (K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, etc). The world wide research progresses of the genus osmunda on plant resources, chemical constituents, bioactivities in the past few decades were collected and summarized. This paper provided the evidences and references for further research and exploitment.

ABSTRACT

Eleven compounds (1–11) were isolated from the rhizomes of Osmunda japonica, and their structures were elucidated based on 1H, 13C-NMR and LC-IT-TOF MS data. Of these compounds, all compounds (1 – 11) have been previously reported, although five (6 – 9, 11) have not previously been isolated from this plant. The antioxidant activities of isolated compounds (1 – 11) were measured by DPPH and ABTS assays, and compound 10 showed the high antioxidant activity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the chemical constituents of the sterile fronds of Osmunda japonica. METHODS: The 95% ethanol extract of the sterile fronds of Osmunda japonica was partitioned with. Eight compounds were isolated by column chromatography from ethyl acetate part, and their structures were identified by analysis of NMR and MS data. RESULTS: The compounds were identified as; (+)-dehydrovomifoliol (1), p-hydroxybenzylideneacetone (2), 3′, 4′-dihydroxybenzylideneacetone (3), protocatechuicaldehyde (4), protocatechuic acid (5), p-hydroxy-benzaldehyde(6), 15-nonacosanone (7), and β-sitosterol (8). CONCLUSION: Compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 were obtained from the genus Osmunda for the first time.
