ABSTRACT

Objective@#To evaluate the clinical efficacy of invisible orthodontic appliances without brackets for the distal movement of maxillary molars to improve the ability of orthodontists to predict treatment outcomes.@*Methods@#Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Wanfang Database, CNKI Database, and VIP Database were searched for studies investigating the efficacy of invisible orthodontic appliances for distal movement of maxillary molars in adult patients and published from database inception to August 1, 2023. A total of three researchers screened the studies and evaluated their quality and conducted a meta-analysis of those that met quality standards.@*Results@#This study included 13 pre- and postcontrol trials with a total sample size of 281 patients. The meta-analysis revealed no significant differences in the sagittal or vertical parameters of the jawbone after treatment when compared with those before treatment (P>0.05). The displacement of the first molar was MD=-2.34, 95% CI (-2.83, -1.85); the displacement was MD=-0.95, 95% CI (-1.34, -0.56); and the inclination was MD=-2.51, 95% CI (-3.56, -1.46). There was a statistically significant difference in the change in sagittal, vertical, and axial tilt of the first molar before and after treatment. After treatment, the average adduction distance of the incisors was MD=-0.82, 95% CI (-1.54, -0.09), and the decrease in lip inclination was MD=-1.61, 95% CI (-2.86, -0.36); these values were significantly different from those before treatment (P<0.05).@*Conclusion@#Invisible orthodontic appliances can effectively move the upper molars in a distal direction and control the vertical position of the molars. When the molars move further away, there is some degree of compression and distal tilt movement, which is beneficial for patients with high angles. The sagittal movement of incisors is beneficial for improving the patient's profile.

ABSTRACT

Background: The fast-growing demand for platelet concentrates (PC) necessitates the storage of these blood products before transfusion. Platelets are prepared as concentrates from the whole blood or by plateletpheresis. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of these PCs is an important issue in transfusion medicine. To assess the qualitative, quantitative changes and bacteriological safety of 5 days of stored platelet concentrates (PC).Material & Methods:This prospective study was conducted at the department of Clinical Pathology in collaboration with the Department of Transfusion Medicine, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka from April 2008 to April 2009. A total of 65 healthy donors were included in the study as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Therefore, 65 platelet concentrates (bags/units) were prepared from the donors. Purposive sampling of the units was done. pH and platelet indices (PLT, MPV, PDW and P-LCR) were measured and Gram staining of PCs was performed on days 0 and 5. Statistical significant tests were done at a 95% confidence interval using the statistical package for social science (SPSS).Results:The mean (±SD) pH was 7.18±0.07 ranging from 7.0 to 7.3 during day 0. On day 5 the mean (±SD) pH was 6.77±0.11 and their range was from 6.5 to 7. The mean pH difference was statistically significant (p<0.05) between day 0 and day 5. The mean (±SD) PLT/unit was 70.56±15.56 x109/unit and it ranged from 38.01 to 110.6 x109/unit during day 0. On day 5 the mean (±SD) PLT/unit level was 68.46±15.52 x109/unit and it ranged from 36.82 to 107.2 x109/unit. The mean PLT/unit difference was statistically significant (p<0.05) between day 0 and day 5. The mean (±SD) MPV was 9.34±0.92 fl and it ranged from 7.5 to 11.5 fl during day 0. During day 5 the mean (±SD) MPV was 9.27±0.99 fl ranging from 7.0 to 11.2 fl. The mean (±SD) PDW was 10.07±1.61 fl and which ranged from 7.4 to 14.4 fl during day 0. During day 5 the mean (±SD) PDW was 10.72±1.71 fl ranging from 7.0 to 15.4 fl. The mean (±SD) PLCR was 18.28±5.67 % and it ranged from 8.0 to 32.5 % during day 0. During day 5 the mean (±SD) PLCR was 21.18±5.91 % and it ranged from 10.0 to 36.3 %. The mean PLT, PDW and PLCR differences were statistically significant (p<0.05) between day 0 and day 5 in the unpaired t-test, however, the mean MPV difference was not statistically significant (p<0.05) between day 0 and day 5. Gram staining of platelet concentrates on day 0 and day 5 found no bacteria.Conclusions:Storage-induced lesions take place in PCs when stored for 5 days in second-generation storage containers under the currently recommended conditions, but how far these changes are clinically relevant needs to be investigated.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To analyze the influencing factors of clinical efficacy of autologous platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. 【Methods】 From January, 2019 to December, 2021, 151 outpatients with androgenetic alopecia were treated in our hospital. All patients were treated with autologous PRP injection once a month and planned to received injection for 4-6 occasions. According to the hair growth before and after treatment, the treatment results were evaluated. The influencing factors in the treatment results were grouped and analyzed, including the treatment numbers (divided into 1-6 occasions), the grade of alopecia(three grades: mild, moderate and severe alopecia) and the Plt concentration in PRP[five grades(×109/L): extremely low concentration (<800), low concentration (801-1 000) and medium concentration (1 001-1 200), high concentration(1 201-1 500)and extremely high concentration(>1 501)]. 【Results】 The correlation coefficient between the number of treatments and the effective rate was pearson=0.986, P<0.001, showing a positive correlation. There was a statistical difference in the total number of treatments between groups (P<0.01). As to the severity of alopecia: The effective rates of mild and moderate alopecia patients (66.67%, 56.95%) were higher than those of severe alopecia patients (35%). The difference between groups was statistically significant (P<0.01). As to the concentration of Plt in PRP: The concentration of Plt directly affected the therapeutic effect. When the Plt count was (1 200-1 500)×109/L, the effect was optimal, reaching 68.12%, which was significantly higher than the other four groups(P<0.01). The treatment numbers, alopecia grade and Plt concentration in PRP were all related to the effectiveness of treatment (P<0.05). When the OR value of treatment numbers and Plt concentration was >1, the effective rate increased by 2.619 times and 2.033 times, respectively, as treatment numbers and Plt concentration increased. When the OR value of the grade of alopecia was 0.338 (0<0.338<1), the effective rate decreased with the increase of alopecia severity; For each grade increased, the effective rate would be compromised by 0.338. 【Conclusion】 When PRP is applied to treat AGA patients, the clinical therapeutic effect will be better in patients who received more treatments, PRP with higher Plt count, and be in the early degree of hair loss. Whether the higher the concentration of Plt in PRP, the better the therapeutic effect will be, remains to be further verified.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the changes in coagulation function in patients with advanced tumors before and after vascular interventional therapy. Methods: A total of 174 patients with middle-late stage tumors undergoing oncology vascular interventional treatment at Beijing Hospital Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated With Capital Medical University, between January 2018 and October 2018 were included in this retrospective analysis. Changes in platelets (PLT) and related blood coagulation indicators were observed before and after vascular intervention. Among them, 63 patients who received relevant indicators detection within a week after vascular intervention were in group A, and 111 patients who received relevant indicators detection 1 month (30±7 days) after vascular intervention were in group B. SPSS version 22 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: In group A, fibrinogen (FIB) and D-dimer (D-D) values significantly increased, activated pattial thromboplastin timeAPITshortened, and PLT values decreased compared to those before treatment (all P0.05) than those before treatment. Before vascular interventional therapy, a total of 58 patients had hypercoagulability, including 28 patients in group A (48.3%) and 30 patients in group B (51.7%). In contrast, after vascular interventional therapy, a total of 71 (40.8%) patients had hypercoagulability, including 40 (56.3%) patients in group A and 31 (43.7%) patients in group B. Conclusions: Vascular interventional treatment can affect the related blood clotting index in the short term, which is intensified in patients with middle-late tumors and a high blood coagulation state. However, over time the coagulation state gradually mitigated and eventually returned to before-treatment levels. These findings suggest that patients' coagulation function should be closely monitored after intervention treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pathogen inactivation (PI) is a proactive approach to overcome the limitations of the current testing system and donor questionnaires. Effect of PI on non-leukoreduced platelet rich plasma derived platelets (PRP-PLTs) suspended in plasma has not yet been evaluated. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of PI on the quality of non-leukoreduced PRP-PLTs suspended in plasma. METHODS: PRP-PLTs treated with the Mirasol PRT System and the Intercept Blood System were tested for PLT count, blood gas, PLT activation, and apoptosis on days 3, 5, and 7 of storage. RESULTS: PLT number showed a decrease after PI. No difference in pH was observed until day 5. At day 7, PLTs treated with Mirasol had a lower pH value (6.5), however, it satisfied the quality control criteria. PLTs treated with Mirasol had a lower pO2 compared to pre-inactivation PLTs. pO2 during storage differed significantly between the two PI groups. pCO2 showed a decrease after inactivation and both groups showed a significant difference, compared with the control. PLTs treated with Mirasol had increased P-selectin expression after inactivation; however, difference of P-selectin during storage was not significant compared to the control. P-selectin of PLTs treated with Intercept was significantly different compared to those treated with Mirasol and control. Annexin V showed an increase after inactivation in Mirasol treated PLTs and difference during storage was significant compared to control and Intercept. CONCLUSION: As both PI systems showed satisfactory pH values, the criteria showing a high correlation with in vivo PLT viability and generally applied to monitor quality of PLTs, quality of PRP-PLTs after PI appears not to be negatively affected.

ABSTRACT

The effects of polarized-light therapy (PLT) on high-cholesterol diet (HCD)-induced hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis were investigated in comparison with that of lovastatin in rabbits. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding male New Zealand white rabbits with 1% cholesterol in diet for 2 weeks and maintained with 0.5% cholesterol for 6 weeks, followed by normal diet for 2 weeks for recovery. Lovastatin (0.002% in diet) or daily 5-min or 20-min PLT on the outside surface of ears was started 2 weeks after induction of hypercholesterolemia. Hypercholesterolemic rabbits exhibited great increases in serum cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) levels, and finally severe atheromatous plaques formation covering 57.5% of the arterial walls. Lovastatin markedly reduced both the cholesterol and LDL, but the reducing effect (47.5%) on atheroma formation was relatively low. By comparison, 5-min PLT preferentially decreased LDL, rather than cholesterol, and thereby potentially reduced the atheroma area to 42.2%. Notably, 20-min PLT was superior to lovastatin in reducing both the cholesterol and LDL levels as well as the atheromatous plaque formation (26.4%). In contrast to the increases in blood alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase following lovastatin treatment, PLT did not cause hepatotoxicity. In addition, PLT decreased platelets and hematocrit level. The results indicate that PLT attenuates atherosclerosis not only by lowering blood cholesterol and LDL levels, but also by improving blood flow without adverse effects. Therefore, it is suggested that PLT could be a safe alternative therapy for the improvement of hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.

ABSTRACT

Pseudomonas sp. M18 is one of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria capable of producing two kinds of anti-fungal agents: phenazine-1-carboxilic acid (PCA) and pyoluteorin (Plt). The pqsR gene, which encodes a LysR family member PqsR, was amplified from chromosomal genome of strain M18. Using the homologous recombination technique, a chromosomal pqsR inactivated mutant strain M18PRG was constructed in Pseudomonas sp. M18. To study the effect of pqsR gene on Plt biosynthesis, the dynamic curves of Plt production by strains M18 and M18PRG was measured in KMB media. As a result, Plt production of the pqsR mutant was three to four folds higher than that of its parent strain M18. The Plt production was restored to the wild-type level when strain M18PRG was complemented with pqsR gene in trans. The regulation of pqsR gene on Plt production was further confirmed by the pltA′-′lacZ translational fusion analysis. These results indicate that pqsR gene negatively controls the Plt biosynthesis. Additionally, by analyzing the growth curves of wild type strain M18 and pqsR mutant, wecan readily find that PqsR has a negative influence on cell growth. It was also shown that the production of red pigments in strain M18 required the expression of pqsR gene. In conclusion, the data presented in this study clearly demonstrate that PqsR acts as a global regulator involved in many physiological activities in Pseudomonas sp. M18.
