ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The geese's tongue filiform papillae are particularly long, and exhibit the same morphology of a tooth, evoking the lingual teeth of several fishes. In adult animals, they contain numerous mechanical Herbst's corpuscles but no taste buds. In the embryo, they appear since stage 38 and acquire their definitive shape between stages 38 and 42. They express several proteins associated with mammalian tooth development (BMP4, β-catenin, SHH, PITX2, PAX9), also known to be linked to parrot's pseudoteeth and goose's denticulations development. Neurofilaments are early present in the papillae primordia, and appear particularly numerous in adult papillae. Our results suggest that these papillae constitute a mechanical organ with a « tooth shape » derived from ancestral odontodes, whose development is controlled by numerous genes involved in classical odontogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To evaluate the effect of anatomical healing abutments for mandibular first molars on the morphological changes of gingival soft tissue after implant restoration, as well as on peri-implant gingival molding, food ingrowth and patient satisfaction, to provide a basis for clinical selection. @*Methods @# Twenty-six patients who received implant restoration for a single missing mandibular first molar between September 2020 and September 2021 at the Oral Implant Center of Changsha Stomatological Hospital were randomly divided into a control group (13 cases with 14 implants) and a trial group (13 cases with 14 implants), of which 12 were male and 14 were female; the trial group had anatomical healing abutments applied for 4 weeks and then underwent crown restoration, while the control group finished five time points (before the second stage surgery, 4 weeks after the second stage surgery, immediately after the crown restoration, 4 weeks after the crown restoration, and 12 weeks after the crown restoration). A 3Shape intraoral scanner was used to scan the jaw before and 4 weeks after the second stage surgery to quantify the soft tissue changes and compare the effect of the healing abutment on gingival molding between the two groups. The incidence of food impaction was recorded and compared between the two groups at 4 weeks and 12 weeks after crown restoration. Patient satisfaction was recorded and compared between the two groups immediately after crown restoration, 4 weeks after crown restoration and 12 weeks after crown restoration@*Results @# Four weeks after implant surgery, it was observed that the gingival proximal and distal gingival papillae increased on the coronal side in the test group compared to the control group, 0.50 (0.26, 0.72) mm in the near-medium test group and 0.27 (0.24, 0.38) mm in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (P = 0.029), and 0.48 (0.26, 0.62) mm in the far-medium test group and 0.23 (0.13, 0.39) mm in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (P = 0.004). There was no statistically significant difference (P>0.05) in the buccolingual to gingival margin apex to coronal molding or in the buccolingual to lingual soft tissue at 0, 1, or 2 mm of the root of the middle 1/3 apex of the buccal and lingual gingival margins between the two groups. Compared to the control group, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of food impaction observed 4 weeks and 12 weeks after crown restoration in the test group (P>0.05). The satisfaction scores were higher in the trial group than in the control group immediately, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks after crown restoration, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). @*Conclusion @# The anatomical healing abutment for the implant mandibular first molar was superior to the finished healing abutment in terms of soft tissue contouring with an increase in the coronal aspect of the proximal and distal gingival papillae, resulting in high patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to morphometrically evaluate the ruminal mucosa and ruminal fluid characteristics of Santa Inês sheep fed different levels of spineless cactus as a replacement for Tifton grass hay. A total of 32 intact male Santa Inês sheep, approximately 180 days old and with a mean weight of 32.0±1.6kg, were studied in a completely randomized design with four treatments and eight replicates. The morphometric measurements evaluated in the ruminal epithelium (papilla height and surface area) were significantly affected (P< 0.05) by supplementation of the diet with spineless cactus, and these effects showed increasing linear trends. Evaluations of the ruminal fluid also showed a significant increasing linear effect (P< 0.05) for ammonia and a quadratic effect for microbial protein. The inclusion of spineless cactus in the sheep diet affects the ruminal epithelium morphology, including the papilla height and surface area, and favors the absorption process in the rumen. The diet containing higher levels of spineless cactus led to maximum microbial protein production. These results characterize spineless cactus as a feasible alternative for feeding sheep during periods of drought, when the typical food source is scarce.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Vernal Keratoconjuctivitis(VKC) is a recurrent, allergic seasonal disease of childhood characterized by severe inflammation of the conjunctiva and giant papillae of the superior tarsal conjunctiva, gelatinous hypertrophy of limbus and keratopathy. Clinical and inmuno histochemical studies suggest that IgE dependent and IgE independent mechanisms are involved in the inmuno pathogenesis of VKC. Allergic disease affects 30-50% of the population. Most of the patients are present in the month of May to June. In this study, it has been found that 156(74.29%) patients show seasonal symptoms and 43(20.48%) patients show perennial symptoms out of total 210 patients. KVC has predilection for young age group and the diagnosis is generally based on signs and symptoms of the disease. This study is undertaken to stress upon the disease and those secondary to its long term medication.

ABSTRACT

A careful examination of cornea and ocular surface eliciting the basic signs will help a clinician toward an accurate diagnosis. Flipping the upper lid or pulling the lower lid to look at the inferior fornix may help to pick up any subtle clinical sign. Meticulous documentation by diffuse and slit view will help in following up the disease. Eyelids and ocular surface are evaluated externally and by slit lamp. Slit-lamp examination with the use of the stains such as fluorescein, rose bengal, or lissamine green provides extensive knowledge about the ocular surface. Tests of tear production are also detailed herein. This review is intended to help the eye practitioners in eliciting common clinical signs seen in cornea and ocular surface diseases.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To evaluate the effect of exogenous stem cells from apical papillae (SCAP) in the pulp revascularization treatment for the immature permanent tooth with periapical periodontitis in animal model.@*Methods@#After the SCAP were isolated and cultured from the Beagle dogs, stem cell properties of these cells were characterized by analyzing their colony-forming ability, the expression of mesenchymal stem cell markers and the multidifferentiation characteristics including osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic potentials. Models of young permanent tooth with periapical periodontitis were established in dogs and the infection in each of the model tooth was eliminated by root canal irrigation and intracanal medication. After that, all of the model teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group 1: normal developing teeth with no treatment applied;Group 2: teeth that periapical tissues were irritated to induce blood flowing into the root canals;Group 3: teeth that peripheral blood was delivered into the root canals;Group 4: teeth that SCAP were resuspended in peripheral blood and delivered into the root canals. In Group 2-4, firm coronal seal was performed after revascularization procedure and radiographs were taken periodically in order to observe the development of roots. After a 12-week-period, alveolar samples were collected and observed histologically.@*Results@#The isolated SCAP showed clonogenic ability and multilineage differentiation ability including osteogenic, adipogenic and chondrogenic potentials. These cells also expressed the mesenchymal stem cell markers such as STRO-1 and CD146, while no cytokeratin was detected. The thickening of canal wall was observed radiographically 12 weeks after procedures of infection control and revascularization. Histologically, the newly formed tissues on the inner canal wall were found bone lacuna like structure in Group 2 and 3, and the new tissue formed in the Group 3 seemed easy to separate from the canal wall. The newly formed tissues in Group 4 were much thicker compare to those in the Group 2 and 3, and the dentine tubule like structure instead of bone lacuna was noticed although the orientation of these tubules were various.@*Conclusions@#SCAP seem to play an important role in the tissue regeneration procedure when infection is well controlled in young permanent teeth with periapical periodontitis. It is difficult to achieve real tissue regeneration due to the lack of endogenous SCAP in apical area, therefore delivering adequate exogenous SCAP isolated and cultured in vitro could be a promising approach to overcome the challenge.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: This study aimed to evaluate the microstructure of the buffalo's hoof capsule using hystomorphometry and computerized light microscopy. The length, thickness, gap and number of epidermal papillae and the morphology of the corneal tubules of the hoof were described in this paper. This study used 56 hoof capsules from hooves of 14 adults - age ranging from 24 to 60 months old - female buffaloes of the Jafarabadi breed; weighing around 650 kg. Fifty-six samples, 28 from thoracic limb and 28 from pelvic limbs, were analyzed, resulting in a total of 112 digits. Clinical specimens were collected at the coronary corium, laminar corium of the abaxial wall and pre-bulbar soles. The study concluded that the microstructure of the hoof capsule of buffalo hooves are made of epidermal papillae measuring 1,721.59 mm of length, 62.94 mm of thickness and 49.02 mm of gap between the papillae. This study determines that the coronary corium has more epidermal papillae than the laminar corium of the abaxial wall and pre-bulbar soles. The corneal tubules of the hoof capsules exhibit helical fashion and points to the possibility of applying this feature to the hooves of the biungulate species as well. In this research, we have been able to determine morphological parameters not yet described in scientific literature. These findings can be used in future comparative studies of healthy cattle and buffaloes and speculate evidence about the hooves' vulnerability facing different hoof diseases.

ABSTRACT

The dorsal surface of the tongues of the Slow Loris and the Pygma Slow Loris were examined by employing scanning electron microscopy techniques. Three types of the papillae are present on their dorsal surface of the tongue: filiform, fungiform and vallate. The filiform papillae are located the apex and the body of the tongue, and we observed that each of them has a gustatory pore. The fungiform papillae, scattered singly among the filiform papillae, distribute mainly on the apex of the tongue. The vallate papillae are located along the diversing arms of the V-shaped boundary between the anterior and posterior regions of the tongue. In addition, no foliate papillae were observed. The morphological characteristics of the dorsal surface of the tongues in Slow Loris and Pygma Slow Loris are similar to each other.

ABSTRACT

The morphology of filiform papilla root in the tongue of Chinese yellow cattle were studied by scanning electron microscopy, and several geometric models were established to analyze the possible effects of such structures on lingual mechanical functions. Conical and tongue-like filiform papillae were detected in different locations on the lingual surface, along with six types of root structures. A lingual groove surrounded the papillae in five of these structures. To date, such grooves have not been discussed in studies on bovine lingual morphology, and those distributed on the dorsal surface of the lingual apex can limit the motion ranges of filiform papillae. Two secondary papillae emerged from a groove on the dorsal surface of the lingual apex's caudal half; these papillae can protect a filiform papilla root from damage. The grooves and the flat orientation of such papillae on the dorsal surface of the lingual body can reduce energy expenditure during forage transportation. A lingual rib that can strengthen the filiform papilla root emerged from a groove on the dorsal surface of the rostral half of the lingual body. On the dorsal surface of the lingual body's caudal half, all filiform papillae emerged from a groove to form low lingual walls that can protect the roots from being crushed by forage. High lingual walls were generated on the lateral surface of the lingual apex; these walls enable filiform papillae to adapt to harsh food environments effectively. The root structures on the lingual body's lateral surface were adequately simple and did not exhibit lingual grooves; thus, hydraulic resistance may decrease during mastication. Diverse root structures can optimize the lingual mechanical functions and improve self-protection capability in combination with the appearance and distributions of these papillae. All the aforementioned features may be the result of environmental adaption and cattle evolution.

ABSTRACT

The dorsal surface structure of the lingual papillae in the least weasel was compared with that of other carnivorous mammalian species. Two types of mechanical papillae (filiform and conical) and two types of gustatory papillae (fungiform and vallate) were observed. The filiform papillae had secondary processes. Rarely conical papillae were observed. A few taste buds were seen on the surfaces of the fungiform papillae. The four vallate papillae were located on both sides of the posterior end of the lingual body. In conclusion, morphological characteristics of the lingual papillae and their distribution in the least weasel were similar to those of the Japanese marten and ferret. The conical papillae in the lingual apex of the Japanese marten and ferret were not observed, but the conical papillae were seen in the lingual apex of the least weasel.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the morphology and basic physiological processes in Chelonia mydas is extremely important and can provide support for evolutionary studies on the species. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology of C. mydas' esophagus in order to produce data that allows comparative analyses with other turtles. Eight specimens of C. mydas from the coast of Espírito Santo were used during the period from September to November 2014. We obtained the curved carapace length (CCL) and curved carapace width (CCW) in centimetres. The esophagus was completely removed from the insertion region of the oropharynx to the initial portion of the stomach for macroscopic and microscopic evaluation. The measurement on the length and description of the structures in four regions of the esophagus were performed. The entire organ was fixed in 10% formalin and then a one centimetre diameter fragment was collected for histological processing and staining by hematoxylin and eosin (HE), Masson, Gram and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) techniques. Juvenile animals had average CCL of 38.8 ± 6.43 cm and average CCW of 35.6 ± 6.59 cm; the adult animal had a CCL measurement of 102.3 cm and CCW of 96.9 cm. The average length of the esophagus was 20.47 ± 1.56 in youth, and total 55.6 cm in the adult. It was observed that C. mydas' esophagus is a tubular muscular organ that consists of conical papillae that vary in quantity and size as they approach the stomach, lined by stratified squamous keratinized epithelium and rich in myxoid tissue. There is variation in the mucosal, submucosal, external muscle and serous layers among the four regions of the esophagus and there are mucus-producing glands in the submucosa of the gastroesophageal junction region. The histomorphometric characteristics of C. mydas' esophagus are important to engage the mechanical function and mucosal protection of this organ.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to characterize and compare the aspects involved in the microstructural formation of the Holstein and Gir breed hoof wall by histomorphometry, three-dimensional microtomography and microhardness test techniques. Seventy-two (18H/18G thoracic and 18H/18G pelvic) Holstein (H) and Gir (G) breed hooves were collected in slaughterhouses. The hooves were divided into six groups according to breed and age group: 24 to 36 months (C1H/C1G), 36 to 60 months (C2H/C2G) and over 60 months (C3H/C3G). The normality and homogeneity analysis of morphometric variables by the Kolmogrov-Sminov and Bartlett tests was conducted as a statistical model. Once the assumptions were met, the Sigmastat 3.5 software was used and the means were compared by T test. The 5% probability level is considered. When the assumptions were not met, the means were compared by the Mann-Whitney nonparametric test, considering the 5% probability level. When comparing the Holstein and Gir breeds, no differences were noticed between them as to the length of the dermal papillae; young animals showed thicker papillae than adult animals; the Holstein breed hooves showed higher amount of 7pores on the wall and on the sole compared to the Gir breed; Holstein cattle hooves showed greater microhardness than Gir cattle; there was no microhardness difference between pigmented and non-pigmented hooves of Holstein and Gir cattle.

ABSTRACT

Tooth proportion, gingival zenith position, position and size of the interdental papillae, gingival biotype, amount of keratinized gingiva and smile line position were evaluated in the 6 upper front teeth in 31 Chilean dental students. The tooth proportion pattern was similar to that described previously in the literature. The zenith position showed an established pattern. A thin gingival biotype was found more frequently. Lateral incisors showed the highest amount of keratinized tissue, followed by central incisors and then the canines. The height of the papillae at the canines was higher than central incisors, while the lowest values were found in the lateral incisors. There was a predominance of a medium smile line.

ABSTRACT

The G. microtarsus is a small marsupial belonging to the Didelphidae family and may be found mainly in the Atlantic Rainforest of the Brazilian Southeastern region. G. microtarsus has important ecological importance in the dispersion of seeds of several plant species. Current research characterizes morphologically six tongues of adult male and female specimens, which are fixed in 10% formaldehyde. The tongues were analyzed, measured and photographed "in situ" and "ex situ". Anatomy, light microscopy and ultrastructural analysis were performed. Macroscopically the tongue has root, a fixed body and a free apex. The tongue has fungiform papillae and high conical and acute filiform papillae across the dorsal surface. It also featured three vallate papillae located at the root and marginal fungiform papillae at the apex. Microscopically, the tongue is composed of longitudinal and transversal muscle fibers. Blood vessels, nerves, serous, mucous and mixed acini are found in non-modeled connective tissue. Ventrally, the tongue is lined by a keratinized stratified pavement epithelium. The morphology of the tongue of G. microtarsus resembles that described in carnivores and marsupials Didelphidae regarding its microscopic structure, differing only in the distribution and number of papillae.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to describe the surface structure of the lingual papillae in Anatolian Water Buffaloes using SEM. Six male Anatolian Water Buffaloes were used. Filiform, lentiform and conical papillae were determined three types as mechanical papillae. Fungiform and vallate papillae were observed two types as gustatory papillae on the tongue in Anatolian Water Buffalo. The filiform papillae were observed on the apex and body of the tongue, besides randomly identified lateral surface of the body. The conical papillae differed from the filiform papillae with its larger size and non existence of the secondary papillae. The fungiform papillae was round in shape and mushroom-like, scattering among the filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the apex, body and the root of the tongue. The fungiform papillae's taste pores and creter-like structure were determined. The lentiform papillae were determined in two types. The borders of the cells and the micro-pitted appearance were defined at the lentiform papillae. In the vallate papillae bud fosse and a thick annular pad was found. These differences on the morphological structures of the lingual papillae were considered to be related to genetic diversity.

ABSTRACT

Three chamaeleon species including Chameleon Chamaeleo chamaeleon, Chameleon Chamaeleo africanus, and Chamaeleon vulgaris were collected and their tongue were dissected and examined morphologically and investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Both species showed similar histological manifestation of lingual papillae and tubular glands with dense mucous secretion especially in Chamaeleon vulgaris. There is no keratinization of lingual surfaces. Ultrastructurally, filliform represent the only pattern of lingual pappillae and take either cylindrical, conical and leaflet structure.Although the examined chalmaeleon species collected from different habitat, it shows almost similarities in their histological and ultrastructural structures.
