ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Methods A cohort of 152 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) patients,40 premalignant lesions of the larynx, and 40 vocal fold polyp patients was evaluated for the expression of HPV16 E7 protein by immunohistochemistry (IHC).E7 protein expression was correlated with clinicopathological features and outcomes. Results The expression of E7 protein in vocal fold polyp was negative, and it's positive expression in precancerous lesions and laryngeaI carcinomas was 2.5%,and 32.9%,respectively.There were no other significant clinical or demographic differences between pl6-positive and-negative cases. There was no difference in overall survival (OS) between E7-positive and-negative patients with 5-year survival of 79% and 66% for p16 positive and negative patients, respectively (P =0.581).There was no statistically significant difference in failure-free survival (FFS) with 5-year FFS of 57.8% and 42.3% for p16 positive and negative patients, respectively (P =0.579).Conclusions E7 expression is infrequent in laryngeal carcinomas. There are no statistically significant correlations between E7 IHC status and OS or FFS.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the expression of human papilloma virus L1 (HPV L1)capsid protein in cervical lesions and different human papillomavirus ( HPV) subtypes, and to guide clinical triage management and best individual treatment. Methods Retrospective analysis of 2012 January to 2014 Janu-ary in Jiaxing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine gynecology clinic for HPV L1 protein combined with HPV type, and liquid-based cytology test ( TCT) of 176 patients data. Results The positive expression rate of HPV L1 protein with TCT examination in the negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy ( NILM) , atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance( ASCUS) , low-grade squamous intraepithe lial lesion ( LSIL) , atypical squamous cells not except high lesion ( ASC-H) , high-grade squamous intraep-ithelial lesion ( HSIL) , and squamous-cell carcinoma ( SCC) was 28.99%, 44.19%, 64.44%, 22.22%, 12.50%, and 0, respectively. No significant differences were found between the NILM and ASCUS groups ( P >0.05) .The positive expression rate of HPV L1 protein in LSIL group was the highest, and it was sta-tistically significantly different from ASC-H and HSIL groups (χ2 =3.88,5.50, P 0.05 ); and statistically significant difference was found between CIN Ⅰgroup and CINⅡ, CINⅢgroup (χ2 =4.53,5.56, P 0.05) .Conclusions Detection of HPV L1 protein is of clinical value to evaluate the risk of cervical lesions.HPV L1 protein combined with HPV type and TCT detection is helpful for traffic man-agement and personalized treatment, and benefit patients with cervical lesions.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the association between high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) load and the expression of nestin in different cervical lesions. Methods The hybridization capture Ⅱ (HC-Ⅱ) assay was used to test the HR-HPV load from 60 patients who were the first time to do the cervical cancer screening in Xiangya Hospital, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of nestin in those biopsy tissue samples. Results (1) The lgHPV level (logarithm of HR-HPV load) in the high level lesion group was higher than the low level one (P <0.05),and HR-HPV load was positively associated with the degree of cervical lesions (rs =0.269,P =0.037).(2) The expression of nestin in A group was weaker than groups B and C (H =7.271,22.843,P <0.01),and the expression of nestin in C group was stronger than B group (H =7.270,P <0.01),and the expression of nestin was positively associated with the degree of cervical lesion (rs =0.646,P =0.000).(3) The HR-HPV load was positively associated with the expression of nestin (P < 0.05).Conclusions The HR-HPV load and the expression of nestin are closely related to the cervical lesions, and the joint detection has a referential value for early prevention of cervical lesions and prediction of progress of cervical precancerous lesion. It might guide the early prevention and treatment of cervical cancers.
