ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to identify body image changes and physical suffering during radiotherapy among breast cancer patients following breast conserving operations and establish correlations between the two. METHODS: Twenty seven patients were recruited in this survey design. Patient interviews and patient-reported questionnaires were used to collect data from March 1 to July 30, 2013. The questionnaire included 18 items about body image and 10 items about physical suffering. RESULTS: Patients' body image during radiotherapy following breast conserving operation turned significantly negative. Likewise, patients' physical suffering increased significantly during radiotherapy. Body image and physical suffering were inversely correlated (p=.031). CONCLUSION: Breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy following breast conserving operations go through changes in body image. Timely and proper interventions for physical suffering during radiotherapy would help to set up and maintain a positive body image.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of physical distress and mental health characteristics with the willingness to repeat an esophagogastroduodenoscopic (EGD) examination. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 137 patients who had an EGD procedure. The mental health status was evaluated with the Checklist-90-Revision tool, which is based on the Multidimensional Self Report Symptom Inventory. RESULTS: The results were as follows. 1) The elderly and those patients with two or more procedures had a significantly higher willingness to repeat the EGD examination. Those who were willing to repeat the examination had more EGD examinations than those who did not (p<0.05). 2) As for the mental health characteristics, persons with a willingness to repeat the EGD examination showed significantly lower scores on the interpersonal, sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, and paranoid ideation than did those without a willingness. 3) As for the degree of physical distress during the EGD examination, persons with a willingness to repeat the EGD examination had significantly lower scores on the total symptom score and global discomfort score than those without a willingness (p<0.05). 4) The younger patients, under 30, had a significantly lower willingness to repeat the EGD examination than did the elderly patients over 60 (OR=86.03, 95% CI 2.11-999). According to patient occupations, homemakers showed a significantly higher willingness than did others (OR=16.24, 95% CI 1.69-156.23). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggested that a willingness to repeat the EGD examination was closely associated with the mental health characteristics of the patients.

ABSTRACT

PUPPOSE: The purposes of the study were 1) to examine what relationships exist between PTE(perceived treatments effect) and PPS (perceived physical suffering) as the independent variables and hope as the dependent variable and 2) to examine whether PTE and PPS predict hope in cancer patients in their post-operative period within the Stotland's hope theory. METHOD: The Visual Analog Scale was used for measuring PTE and PPS and the Kim and Lee's Hope Scale which had acceptable reliability and validity was used for measuring hope. The data was collected from 38 hospitalized cancer patients who were in the post-operative period with a convenient sampling method. RESULT: There was a significant positive relationship between hope and the PTE in the low PTE group. There was a significant negative relationship between hope and the PPS in the low PPS group. There were no significant relationships between hope and the PTE in the high PTE group, and between hope and the PPS in the high PPS group. And the PTE explained hope with 71.2% of the variance in the low PTE group. CONCLUSION: PTE in the low PTE group and PPS in the low PPS group were identified as the factors to explain hope.
