ABSTRACT

Physiotherapy adds quality to the life of people. It provides support to people with disability. Leprosy is such a debilitating condition in which people suffer concerning their functionality and emotional parameters even after bacteriological cure. Leprosy is having several types of social stigmas attached to it which could be the reason for the discrimination among this population. Boosting the knowledge and building up a strong and positive attitude among physiotherapy students and practitioners against leprosy will be of help in overcoming the various multiple taboos associated with this condition. This research work aims at evaluating the knowledge and attitude towards leprosy among physiotherapy students and professionals in India. This study involves 300 voluntary participants from the physiotherapy field (students and professionals) above the age of 18 years from any gender from India, with a good hold on the English language. The response of all the participants was descriptively analyzed. Among study participants the mean score for the knowledge was estimated to be 65.47±14.69. Out of 300 participants, only 72 participants have shown a high level of knowledge with a mean score value of 84.54±5.23, and 228 participants showed a low level with a mean score value of 59.44±11.14. The mean score for the attitude related questions was 54.7±26.21. 189 respondents presented a favorable response with a mean of 71.16±16.56 whereas 111 respondents presented an unfavorable attitude with a mean value of 26.67±11.86. The findings of this research work gave us an insight into the “low-level knowledge” and a relatively “favorable behavior” towards the patient affected by leprosy among the physiotherapy students and practitioners in India. However, still, there is a need to enhance the knowledge and improve attitude among the Physiotherapy students and professionals by educating them and including leprosy in sufficient details in physiotherapy curriculum. Properly designed research cum intervention studies are necessary to understand the gaps in knowledge and attitudinal problems and take remedial measures.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) require long periods of hospitalization, being subjected to immobilization, which results in significant loss of muscle mass. Early mobilization is a therapy performed in the ICU environment and aims to reduce functional impairment resulting from hospitalization. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the practice of early mobilization performed by the intensive care physiotherapist, identify the main interventions used by these professionals, and describe the barriers found that make early mobilization unfeasible in patients admitted to intensive care units. METHODOLOGY: Field study, quantitative and transversal, carried out between February and May 2020, with intensive care physiotherapists from three hospitals in the city of Fortaleza, namely two of them are from the public network (one municipal and the other state) and the other from the private network. Intensive care physiotherapists working in the mentioned hospitals and who have a link with the institution were included in the study. Physiotherapists in the role of residents, interns, and preceptors present were excluded. For data collection, the online electronic form was made possible through the Google Forms application. The data were analyzed and tabulated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. The chi-square statistical tests were to determine differences in the responses of the safety criteria and barriers to the implementation of early mobilization and the length of experience in the intensive care unit and Kruskal-Wallis to compare early mobilization interventions between groups of physiotherapists from the three hospitals. RESULTS: 68 physiotherapists participated in the research, the majority (36.8%) having worked in intensive care for 6 to 10 years. The management of early mobilization is performed mostly by the physiotherapist. Regarding functional scales used in the ICU, the Medical Research Council (MRC) was the most cited by professionals with (67.7%). The most used mobilization strategy was sedestation (91.2%). Respiratory distress was the most frequently cited clinical situation for interrupting early mobilization (83.8%). CONCLUSION: The most frequent interventions were sedation, the cycle ergometer, and transfers from an armchair bed. The patient-related barriers were hemodynamic instability, use of sedative and analgesic drugs.

ABSTRACT

Physiotherapist is a discipline whose aim is to preserve, restore, and improve the health status of individuals with motor disturbances or at risk of developing and to improve the quality of life of people and community. The aim of this article was to determine which are the most important topics of general organic and biological chemistry courses within the physiotherapist undergraduate career at the University Bernardo O´Higgins. For this purpose we followed a model of qualitative study, applied in two different groups of people: educators of the physiotherapist career (PE) and clinical physiotherapist (CP), who were asked about the importance of topics related to chemistry courses, general, organic and biological (GOB courses). Each participant must choose a category for each topic: "important", "relevant" or "not important" for a physiotherapist clinical activity. Results show that the more frequently topics considered as "important" in both groups were from biological chemical course: proteins and its metabolism. Secondly, none of the interviewed subjects considered any of the topics of the course of organic chemistry as "important" for the clinical activity of a physiotherapist. Thus, the aim of the study is widely fulfilled and it might be concluded that future studies are required involving a larger sample size in these and other universities that will generate results for a good curricular articulation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The range of motion (ROM) of the knee and the satisfaction rate after total knee arthroplasty are the most important factors when evaluating the result of an operation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ROM and the functional outcome of these patients increase after joint exercise that is performed by special physiotherapists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 200 cases of 120 patients, who underwent total knee replacement arthroplasty for osteoarthritis between August 2006 and May 2008, were enrolled in this study. These cases were randomly divided into 3 groups. Only CPM (continuous passive movement) and MSE (muscle strengthening exercise) were performed after KTA in the first group. In the second group, pROME was performed by physical therapists in our rehabilitation institution during the hospital stay, as well as CPM and MSE. CPM, MSE and pROME were performed by special physiotherapists during the hospital stay and also in the outpatient department after being discharged from the hospital in the third group. We compared the results of these groups. RESULTS: The range of motion was not increased among the groups. On the other hand, the third group showed a significantly higher functional outcome, as compared to that of the first and second groups. Conclusion: Although the range of motion of the knee joint was not increased enough to achieve statistical significance, the functional outcome showed significant increases with the pROME performed by physiotherapists. This result demonstrates that the knee exercises performed by special physiotherapists are useful and they can yield good outcomes in patients who underwent TKA.

ABSTRACT

The polio epidemics in the country and especially in Rio de Janeiro left hundreds of children with sequels in the 1950s. The public outcry over the polio epidemic, the reports in the press and the association of experienced physicians with businessmen, bankers and relatives of victims created the conditions for the emergence of a philanthropic entity to combat infantile paralysis. The Brazilian Beneficent Association of Rehabilitation (BBAR) was founded in 1954, and two years later the association created the School of Rehabilitation of Rio de Janeiro (SRRJ), the first institution to graduate physiotherapists in the country. This article presents a socio-historical analysis of the establishment of physiotherapy as a profession in Rio de Janeiro in the course of the creation and accreditation of the School of Rehabilitation. It is concluded that the polio epidemics played a central role in the creation of the School of Rehabilitation and that conversely this institution had a strong influence in the recognition of physiotherapy as a health profession in the country.

ABSTRACT

The study of the patient-physiotherapist relationship is of great interest, because unlike another health-care professional, the physio therapist is supposed to have a closer corporal contact than the others. Through the analysis and identification of the process involved in this relationship, is possible to get a better comprehension about the relative positions and the elements of power used in each role assumed, associated with their social and cultural background. The proposal is having a critical view of the interactions during a treatment session in order to give new dimensions and possibilities to the professional practice, having in account social and cultural references. In this paper is presented the first study phase, with the emerging conceptual categories, related to body language, verbal communication, surrounding and cultural factors. The influences in the therapist-patient relationship are discussed for being analyzed and interpreted in the second phase.
