ABSTRACT

Abstract The puffer fish Colomesus psittacus, is not commercialized on Marajó Island. They are captured as bycacth and discarded dead in the environment in artisanal fisheries that occur in the estuaries of northern Brazil. In this sense, the objective was to identify the parasites present in the gills and to evaluate the histopathological alterations caused by these nematodes of the genus Huffmanela. Fifty-five fish were analyzed, and thirty-five specimens showed the parasite in the gills. Morphological characteristics suggest that it is a new species of the genus Huffmanela, and the histopathological exams showed an edematous inflammation in the secondary lamella and the presence of eggs of this nematode, which is the first record of this parasite in C. psittacus in Brazil.


Resumo O baiacu amazônico Colomesus psittacus é um peixe de importância comercial para a aquariofilia, além de ser capturado como bycacth e descartado morto no ambiente nas pescarias artesanais que ocorrem nos estuários da região Norte do Brasil. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se identificar e descrever nematódeos do gênero Huffmanela em baiacus oriundos da ilha de Marajó, bem como as alterações histopatológicas causadas por eles. Cinquenta e cinco peixes foram analisados, e trinta e cinco espécimes apresentaram o parasita nas branquias. Características morfológicas sugerem tratar-se de uma nova espécie do gênero Huffmanela, e os exames histopatológicos demonstraram uma inflamação edematosa na lamela secundária e presença de ovos desse nematódeo. Esse fato se torna o primeiro registro desse gênero parasito em C. psittacus no Brasil.

ABSTRACT

Currently biogeochemical models are used to understand and quantify key biogeochemical processes in the ocean. The objective of the present study was to validate predictive ability of a regional configuration of the PISCES biogeochemical model on main biogeochemical variables in Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem (HCLME). The statistical indicators used to evaluate the model were the bias, root-mean-square error, correlation coefficient and, graphically, the Taylor’s diagram. The results showed that the model reproduces the dynamics of the main biogeochemical variables (chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen and nutrients); in particular, the impact of El Niño 1997-1998 in the chlorophyll (decrease) and oxygen minimum zone depth (increase). However, it is necessary to carry out sensitivity studies of the PISCES model with different key parameters values to obtain a more accurate representation of the properties of the Ocean.


Los modelos biogeoquímicos en la actualidad son utilizados para entender y cuantificar los principales procesos biogeoquímicos que suceden en el océano. El objetivo del presente estudio es validar estadísticamente la habilidad predictiva de una simulación del modelo biogeoquímico PISCES en reproducir la dinámica de las principales variables biogeoquímicas del Ecosistema de la Corriente de Humboldt (ECH). Para evaluar el modelo se utilizaron indicadores estadísticos: sesgo, error de la raíz del cuadrado medio, coeficiente de correlación y gráficamente el diagrama de Taylor. Los resultados muestran que el modelo es capaz de reproducir la dinámica de las principales variables biogeoquímicas (clorofila, oxígeno disuelto y nutriente), captando bien el impacto que tiene El Niño 1997-1998 en la clorofila (disminución) y profundidad de la zona mínima de oxígeno (incremento). Es necesario llevar a cabo estudios de sensibilidad del modelo PISCES usando diferentes valores de los principales parámetros para obtener una mejor representación de las propiedades biogeoquímicas del océano.

ABSTRACT

O desenvolvimento embrionário dos peixes é de grande importância para a piscicultura e na reintrodução de espécies ameaçadas de extinção em seus ambientes, e seu conhecimento constitui uma importante maneira para minimizar doenças e mortalidades dessas espécies. Com o auxílio de técnicas como a Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e a imuno-histoquimica para identificar proteínas ósseas, foi possível avaliar as fases de desenvolvimento com mais riqueza de detalhes, facilitando a compreensão de hábitos e da biologia da espécie. Neste trabalho pudemos observar a ontogenia e osteogênese da Piapara (Leporinus elongatus), desde a fecundação até a fase juvenil, sendo evidenciadas estruturas importantes como o tamanho do vitelo, essencial para a nutrição do embrião; o fechamento do blastóporo, evento principal da embriogênese, que indica as taxas de fertilização; a metamorfose, que indica a formação dos primeiros e principais órgãos do animal e a formação de sua estrutura óssea. As Proteínas Ósseas Morfogenéticas (BMP-2 e BMP-4), moléculas essenciais reguladoras no desenvolvimento embrionário e na formação óssea, foram observadas apenas no estádio larval até o período juvenil, não sendo evidenciadas nos estágios anteriores. Os resultados desse trabalho trouxeram novas informações quanto à biologia do desenvolvimento dessa espécie, que certamente poderão auxiliar no aprimoramento de técnicas reprodutivas visando uma melhora na sua produção seja para fins comerciais ou de repovoamento.(AU)


The embryonic development of fishes has great importance in fish culture and on reintroduction of species at risk of extinction into their environment; its knowledge constitutes an important way to minimize diseases and mortality of these species. By using techniques like electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry for bone markers identification, it was possible to evaluate the developmental stages of Leporinus elongatus in more details, helping to clarify the habits and biology of this species. Results showed the ontogeny and ostheogenesis of of Leporinus elongatus this species from fecundation to juvenile, evidencing important structures as size of the yolk, essential to embryo nutrition, the blastopores closure, important event in embryogenesis because it indicates fertilization indexes, and the metamorphosis, which shows the main organs' development including bones. Bone morphogenetic markers 1 and 4, essential regulatory molecules for bone development, had their expression restricted from larva to fry stages, and were not observed in their previous stages. In sum, these results provided new data that may improve reproductive techniques for L. elongatus, and will support commercial and repopulation purposes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The genetic variability of Oligosarcus paranensis was estimated from a population collected in São Francisco river, Prudentópolis county in Paraná State (Brazil) using the electrophoresis in starch gel technique. Eleven enzymatic systems were analyzed: Aspartate aminotransaminase (AAT; E. C. 2.6.1), Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; E. C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (EST; E. C. 3.1.1.1), Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI; E. C. 5.3.1.9), Glycerol-3-Phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH; E. C. 1.1.1), Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH; E. C. 1.1.1.42), L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; E. C. 1.1.1.27), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH; E. C. 1.1.1.37 ), Malate dehydrogenase NADP (ME; E. C. 1.1.1.40), Phosphoglucomutase (PGM; E. C. 5.4.2.2) and Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORB; E.C. 1.1.1.14). Twenty loci were identified through 15% corn starch gel electrophoresis of which nine (45%) were polymorphic. The average expected heterozygosity was estimated as 0.1229 ± 0.1728, and the observed was 0.0586 ± 0.1069, indicating high genetic variability. The average value of FIS = 0.5145 indicates homozygote excess.


A variabilidade genética de Oligosarcus paranensis foi estimada a partir de uma população coletada no rio São Francisco, município de Prudentópolis no Estado do Paraná (Brasil) utilizando a técnica de eletroforese em gel de amido. Onze sistemas enzimáticos foram analisados: Aspartato aminotransaminase (AAT; E.C. 2.6.1.1), Álcool desidrogenase (ADH; E.C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (EST; E.C. 3.1.1.1), Glicose-6-fosfato isomerase (GPI; E.C. 5.3.1.9), Glicerol-3-fosfato desidrogenase (G3PDH; E.C. 1.1.1.8), Isocitrato desidrogenase (IDH; E.C. 1.1.1.42), L-Lactato desidrogenase (LDH; E.C. 1.1.1.27), Malato desidrogenase (MDH; E.C. 1.1.1.37), Malato desidrogenase NADP+ (ME; E.C. 1.1.1.40), Fosfoglicomutase (PGM; E.C. 5.4.2.2) e Sorbitol desidrogenase (SORB; E.C. 1.1.1.14). Foram identificados vinte loci por eletroforese em gel de amido de milho 15% dos quais nove (45%) foram polimórficos. A heterozigosidade média esperada foi estimada em 0,1229 ± 0,1728, e a observada foi de 0,0586 ± 0,1069, indicando uma alta variabilidade genética. O valor médio de FIS = 0,5145 indica excesso de homozigotos.

ABSTRACT

Two allopatric morphotypes of the genus Rinelocaria were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique: one morphotype, R. pentamaculata, from the Keller River in the middle stretch of the Ivaí River basin and the other, R. aff. pentamaculata, from the São João River in the upper portion of the Ivaí River basin. The morphotype from the São João River was collected upstream from the São João waterfall, which is about 80 m deep. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, which allowed to score 22 loci. Only loci Aat-2, Est-3 and Mdh-C showed polymorphism. The two samples differed in allele frequencies at the three polymorphic loci. The average expected heterozygosity for all loci was 0.0806 ± 0.0447 in the Keller River sample. For the São João River morphotype, this value was 0.0489 ± 0.0350. Nei' s genetic identity and distance between the two populations were respectively 0.9789 and 0.0213. Wright's F IS, F IT and F STover all loci were estimated as 0.3121, 0.4021 and 0.1309, respectively. We consider that the two morphotypes represent species in statu nascendi.

ABSTRACT

The karyotypes of two species of catfish, Rita rita (Hamilton) (2n = 54; 14m + 34sm + 6st; NF = 102) and Mystus gulio (Hamilton) (2n = 58; 30m + 12sm + 2st + 14t, NF = 100) were studied through Giemsa-, silver- and chromomycin A(3)-staining techniques. The silver-stained karyotypes in both sexes of R. rita and M. gulio revealed that the nucleolus organizing regions were located terminally at the shorter arms (Tp) of one pair of submetacentric chromosomes, placed at positions Nos. 2 and 1, respectively, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Staining with a GC-specific fluorochrome, chromomycin A(3), produced bright fluorescence in the Ag-positive nucleolus organizer regions, suggesting thereby that nucleolus organizing regions actually included GC-rich sites of active r-RNA genes in metaphase chromosomes of these two bagrids. Further such studies are needed due to the extreme paucity of data on fish.

ABSTRACT

A new species of moray eel from deep water in the Gulf of California is described. It is dark brownish-black with an overall pattern of pale irregular blotches; a short, broad head; wide, triangular jaws; deeply serrate and partially biserial teeth; dorsal-fin origin above and behind gill opening; and 10 predorsal, 66 preanal, and 134 total vertebrae. This combination of characters is not shared by any other moray species.

ABSTRACT

The distribution area of Leporinus pachycheilusBritski, 1976 (Osteichthyes, Anostomidae), described from the Aripuanã river, is amplified to the Jamari and the Machado rivers, all tributaries of the Madeira river, and to the Uatumã, Araguari and Tocantins drainages. A complementary description of this species is given. Geographical variation on scales number was observed among diferent populations and a highly diverse color pattern at interpopulation and in-trapopulation levels. Leporinus juliin. sp., a new species close to L.pachycheilus,is decribed from Xingu and Trombetas drainage. This is a group of species restricted to the rapids of rivers draining Brazilian and Guianean shields and the uniques to present mouth completely inferior and incisiviform teeths, inserted side by side.


A área de distribuição de Leporinus pachycheilusBritski, 1976 (Teleostei, Anostomidae), descrita do rio Aripuanã, é ampliada para os rios Jamari e Machado, ambos afluentes do Madeira, assim como para os rios Uatumã, Araguari e Tocantins. Esta espécie apresenta alta variabilídade intra e inter-populacional no padrão de colorido, mas a consistência dos caracteres morfológicos indica que se trata de um grupo bem definido e não distinto do material descrito para a localidade tipo (rio Aripuanã). Uma nova espécie (Leporinus juliisp.n.) é descrita para os rios Xingu e Trombetas. Esta é muito semelhante a L. pachycheilus,mas difere basicamente pelo maior número de escamas ao redor do pedúnculo caudal (16 contra 12) e pelo padrão de colorido, formado por manchas arredondadas, ao invés de listras longitudinais. Ambas as espécies são restritas a trechos de corredeiras de rios que drenam os escudos das Guianas e do Brasil Central e são as únicas espécies de anostomídeos da Amazônia que apresentam boca totalmente inferior e dentes incisiviformes, dispostos lado a lado.
