ABSTRACT

Background@#Chronic hepatitis B infection is endemic in the Philippines, where there is a large population of seafarers, a group considered high risk for HBV infection. As such, epidemiological data on this population group is vital for the targeted approach on health- related policies.@*Objective@#To establish the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection among seafarers who underwent pre-employment medical examination (PEME) at Association of Maritime Officers and Seafarers’ Union of the Philippines-Seamen’s Hospital (AMOSUP-SH) from 2013-2017.@*Methods@#3696 charts were included for review. Charts with positive HbsAg results were sorted, counted, and analyzed. Subsequent data extraction was done on age, sex, marital status, religion, position on board, history of STD and prior surgeries, presence of tattoos, and the result of HIV and syphilis serology test. These were then described using frequency and percentage.@*Results@#4.17% (n=154) were HbsAg positive. All were male with a mean age of 44 years old. Majority were married (134, 87%), catholic (149, 96.7%) and on deck position (84, 54.5%). 29.8% had identifiable risk factors and these were surgical history (37, 24.03%) and body tattoos (11, 7.14%) while none had a history of STD and a positive test for HIV and syphilis.@*Conclusions@#The level of HBsAg seroprevalence among Filipino seafarer is at the low intermediate level of endemicity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of occupational health intervention measurements on occupational health of pre-employment workers. METHODS: Four hundred and three pre-employment workers from different types of occupations and enterprises of different industries in Urumqi from October 2013 to December 2014 were selected as the study objects.Health education intervention measurements including occupational health knowledge, occupational protection theory and practical operations were carried out through expert lectures, distributing promotional materials, on-site or network consulting and other means, which was performed twice per month for over 10 times. A questionnaire survey was performed before and after the intervention on occupational disease prevention and treatment knowledge, attitude and occupational health education demands among the workers. RESULTS: Among the 403 study subjects, the total awareness rate of occupational disease prevention and treatment knowledge after intervention was higher than that before intervention( 88. 09% vs 49. 63%,P < 0. 01). The total positive rate of occupational disease prevention and treatment attitude was higher than that before the intervention( 96. 03% vs 62. 28%,P < 0. 01). The total demand rate of occupational health education was increased compared to that before the intervention( 84. 62% vs 48. 64%,P < 0. 01). CONCLUSION: The occupational health promotion for pre-employment workers can increase the workers 'awareness of occupational disease knowledge, understand and identify occupational disease hazards, and strengthen their consciousness of self protection. It is one of the effective ways to protect the employees' physical and mental health and avoid occupational hazards.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: A study was conducted for investigating the status of simple X-rays on lumbosacral regions at pre-employment health examination and analysing the effectiveness of simple X-rays on lumbosacral regions. METHODS: The study data were pre-employment health examination data in a university hospital from Jan 3, 1993 through October of 1997. And, 97 newly employed workers who claimed no low back pain at pre-employment health examination of a certain company were follow-up survey about low back pain and related factors in April, 1995 and October of 1997. The data were collected by a self-reported questionnaire and a medical examination with a rehabilitation specialist. RESULTS: Taking the simple X-rays on lumbo-sacral regions was 1, 591 workers(10.5%) among 15,166 pre-employment health examination from Jan 3, 1993 through October of 1997. And yearly application rates of these X-ray tests have been significantly statistical increasing (p<0.01). 2. The abnormal findings of simple X-rays on lumbo-sacral regions at pre-employment health examination were 40 workers. But, there was not significantly statistical difference between normal and abnormal group for the complaint rate of low back pain. 3. The number of case with symptoms of low back pain at the follow-up survey were 46, so the incidence density was 37. 1 persons/ 100 person-years. And the incidence density was not significantly statistical difference between normal and abnormal group of simple X-rays on lumbo-sacral regions. 4. Through the multivariate logistic regression, significantly associated factors with low back pain were found to be tenure(OR=0.36, 95%CI: 0.17-0.79), lifting of heavy materials(OR=5. 86, 95%CI: l. 58-21. 74). CONCLUSION: The simple X-rays on lumbo-sacral regions at pre-employment health examination is required further research for utilizing pre-employment health examination according to above results.
