ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES@#Differences in ethnicity and geographical factors may have an effect in the characteristics of the prostate in men. To date, there is no demographical data regarding the average prostate volume among Filipino males stratified per age.@*METHODS@#Retrospectively collected data from 3568 consecutive patients who had an ultrasound of the prostate from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2016. Age and prostate volume by ultrasound were collected. Patients who had previous prostate surgery were excluded, and for uniformity of results, only patients who underwent transabdominal prostate ultrasound were included.@*RESULTS@#Patients were stratified into the following age groups: 29 and below, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 and above, and present results showed that the mean values of prostate volume were 15.8 ± SD 5.4, 19.6 ± SD 5.7, 22.1 ± SD 7.3, 28.0 ± SD 11.0, 34.0 ± SD 17.9, 39.6 ± SD 28.13, 39.2 ± SD 23.3, respectively.@*CONCLUSION@#The mean prostate volume among Filipino males increases with age and the threshold for an enlarged prostate might need an adjustment in dealing with Filipino patients.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Digital rectal examination (DRE) grading and the grade of prostatomegaly on cystoscopy are routinely used in clinical practice, but its correlation to prostate volume is understudied. This study was done to assess the correlation of DRE and endoscopic grading with the prostate volume on trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS). Materials and Methods: This study was carried out in 101 eligible patients with prostatomegaly. Each patient was evaluated for three parameters, prostate volume by TRUS examination, DRE and endoscopic grading on cystoscopy. Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated to find the correlation between variables, p<0.05 was taken to be statistically significant. Data were analyzed using the Epi Info (TM) 7.2.2.2. Results: Significant positive correlation (p<0.001) was found between TRUS Volume and DRE grading (Pearson Correlation=0.945) and TRUS volume and Endoscopic grading (Pearson Correlation=0.949). Both the grading were also significantly positively correlated (Pearson Correlation=0.989, p<0.001). Conclusion: Our attempt for correlating the digital rectal grading and endoscopic grading with prostate volume is satisfactorily validated in the clinical setting. These grades are sufficient to provide a rough estimation of the prostate volume and to classify patients with prostatomegaly.

ABSTRACT

Objectives To evaluate the PSA in a large population of Brazilian men undergone to check up, and correlate the PSA cutoffs with prostate size and urinary symptoms. Materials and Methods This is a cross sectional study performed with men between 40 and 70 years undergone to check-up. All men were undergone to urological evaluation, digital rectal examination, prostate-specific antigen, and ultrasonography The exclusion criteria were men who used testosterone in the last six months, or who were using 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors. Results A total of 5015 men with an average age of 49.0 years completed the study. Most men were white and asymptomatic. The PSA in the three different aging groups were 0.9 ± 0.7ng/dL for men between 40 and 50; 1.2 ± 0.5ng/dL for men between 50 and 60; and 1.7 ± 1.5ng/dL for men greater than 60 years (p=0.001). A total of 192 men had PSA between 2.5 and 4ng/ml. From these men 130 were undergone to prostate biopsy. The predictive positive value of biopsy was 25% (32/130). In the same way, 100 patients had PSA >4ng/mL. From these men, 80 were undergone to prostate biopsy. In this group, the predictive positive value of biopsy was 40% (32/100). The Gleason score was 6 in 19 men (60%), 7 in 10 men (31%) and 8 in 3 men (9%). Conclusions The PSA level of Brazilian men undergone to check up was low. There was a positive correlation with aging, IPSS and prostate size. .
