ABSTRACT

Heterotopic prostatic tissue has been reported in a variety of sites within and outside the urinary tract. Extra-urethral ectopic prostatic tissue is a distinct entity and may be more common than previously thought. We report a case of heterotopic prostatic tissue in 71-year-old man. Pelvic CT scan showed a well circumscribed cystic mass in the retrovesical space. Grossly, the tumor was 7.5 7.0 2.8 cm and revealed an ovoid unilocular cyst containing grayish amorphous granular materials. The prostatic origin of the tissue was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining for prostate specific antigen.

ABSTRACT

Ovarian mature cystic teratoma containing benign prostatic tissue is rare and only 11 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a case of mature cystic teratoma of the ovary containing prostatic tissue. A 23-year-old female patient came to our hospital complaining of irregular menstruation for 3 months. Her menarche had occurred when she was 13 years old. The patient showed no evidence of virilization nor of endocrinopathy. A goose-egg-sized mass was palpable in the left lower abdomen on physical examination. Ultrasonography revealed a cystic ovarian mass with internal echogenecity. Microscopic finding was consistent with that of usual mature cystic teratoma except for a 1.5 cm focus of prostatic and bladder tissues. Prostatic tissue demonstrated strong immunoreactivity for prostatic specific antigen (PSA), prostatic alkaline phosphatase (PAP) and cytokeratin 7. Basal cells of the prostate glands were positive for high molecular weight cytokeratin (34betaE12). Although ovarian mature cystic teratoma containing prostatic tissue has been reported as a rare occurrence, a careful examination with immunohistochemical staining may increase the detection of prostatic tissue in mature cystic teratoma of the ovary.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the penetration capability of Levofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin into prostatic tissue, we analysed the concentration of each drug in serum and prostatic tissue simultaneously after oral administration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia treated with transurethral resection of the prostate were entered in this study. A single dose of 200mg Levofloxacin(LVFX) and 250mg ciprofloxacin(CPFX) were administered orally. Two hours after administration, blood and prostatic tissue samples were taken during operation. Concentration of each drug in serum and prostatic tissue was measured simultaneously by high performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: The mean concentration of LVFX in serum was 1.970 +/- 0.759 microgram/ml, which was significantly higher than that of CPFX(0.903 +/- 0.291 microgram /ml)(p < 0.05). The mean concentration of LVFX in prostatic tissue(2.256 +/- 1.121 microgram/g), however, was not significantly different from that of CPFX(2.395 +/- 0.846 microgram/g). And the concentration ratio(tissue/serum concentration) of LVFX and CPFX was 1.16 and 2.76, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that LVFX is not superior to CPFX with respect to the penetration capability into prostatic tissue. Considering that the concentration of LVFX in prostatic tissue was higher than that in serum and not different from that of CPH, LVFX may be another potential effective agent in treating patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis.
