ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the suicidal ideation among unmarried female migrant workers in Shanghai and Guangzhou and explore the association between suicidal ideation and some psychosocial problems, reproductive health factors. Methods:A questionnaire survey was conducted among 3 553 unmarried female migrant workers in two factories in Shanghai and two in Guangzhou by convenient sampling. Logistic regression was used to analyze the related factors of suicide ideation including psychosocial problems and reproductive health factors. Results:Overall, 287(8.1%) of the respondents had suicidal ideation during the past year. Univariate Logistic regression showed that alcohol, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, loneliness, poor social support (emotional support and economic support), favorable attitude toward premarital pregnancy, favorable attitude toward multiple induced abortion, experience of unplanned pregnancy and experience of induced abortion were related to suicidal ideation after demographic factors being corrected. Multivariate Logistic regression showed that alcohol (OR=1.42, 95% CI 1.04-1.93), low self-esteem (OR=1.47, 95% CI 1.03-2.11), loneliness (OR=3.30, 95% CI 2.42-4.51), poor emotional support (OR=2.68, 95% CI 2.00-3.61) and poor economic support (OR=3.79, 95% CI 2.86-5.04) were the critical factors. Conclusion:The factors such as risk behavior, mental health, lack of social support were associated with increased odds for suicidal ideation among the unmarried female migrant workers. The prevention and intervention mechanism should be constructed, and the social support should be enhanced to effectively prevent the occurrence of suicidal ideation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate condom use among unmarried female migrant workers in Shanghai and explore its relation with some psychosocial problems. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted by cluster random sampling. A total of 903 unmarried female migrant workers who had sexual experience were enrolled to evaluate their condom use and psychosocial factors. Logistic regression was used to analyze the related factors of condom use. Results: Among the unmarried female migrant workers, the percentage of consistent condom use was only 13.8%. Univariate Logistic regression showed that low self-esteem (OR=0.47, 95% CI=0.25-0.90) and depression (OR=0.59, 95% CI=0.38-0.93) were related to inconsistent condom use after correcting demographic factors. Multivariate Logistic regression showed that depression (OR=0.58, 95% CI=0.37-0.90) was the main factor related to inconsistent condom use. The participants with at least two psychosocial problems were more difficult to use condoms consistently (OR=0.56, 95% CI=0.32-0.97). Conclusion: The unmarried female migrant workers with depression or co-occurring psychological problems in Shanghai are more likely to have unsafe sex behavior, which indicates the importance of psychological interventions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Precocious puberty leads to discrepancies between physical and chronological age. The aim of the present study was to evaluate behavioral patterns and social competences in 34 girls with idiopathic precocious puberty. METHODS: Height, body weight, and BMI were determined, and pubertal development was assessed. The Korean-child behavior checklist (K-CBCL) was completed by parents. RESULTS: 1) Body weight and BMI were significantly higher in precocious puberty group than in the control group. 2) T scores of total social competence and school scales of K-CBCL were significantly higher in the precocious puberty group than in the control group. 3) T scores of externalizing problems and total behavior problems of K-CBCL were also significantly higher in the precocious puberty group. 4) T scores of thought problems and attention problems of K-CBCL were significantly higher in the precocious puberty group than the control group. CONCLUSION: Although girls with precocious puberty had more behavioral problems, no significant differences were observed between the two study groups in terms of clinically-important T scores. However, the concerns of parents and patients regarding behavioral and emotional changes might be most important when evaluating psychosocial problems. Early recognition, sufficient understanding, communication with patients and parents regarding physical developmental difference from children in the same age, can improve the self-image of those with precocious puberty.

This study was designed to evaluate the personality characteristics of orthognathic surgery patients preoperatively and postoperatively through the MMPI. Comparison was made between the personality characteritics of preoperative and postoperative groups. Motivation for undergoing orthognathic surgery and postoperative satisfaction were examined through the questionnaire. Subjects used in this study consisted of 50 patients under presurgical orthodontic treatment and 22 patients who had received orthognathic surgery. From this study, the results were followings. 1. In preoperative patients group, all T-scores were within the normal range except for K-scale. The T-score of K-scale is 57.7, this showed that these patients underwent some or less stress. 2. In postoperative patients group, all T-scores were within the normal range. 3. Only in K-scale, there was statistically significant increase after surgery (P<0.05). 4. In male patients group, all T-scores were within the normal range except for that of preoperative K-scale. Postoperatively, there were statistically significant increase in K and Hs scales(P<0.05) 5. In female patients group, all T-scores were within the normal range. 6. Motivation for undergoing orthognathic surgery could be divided into 4 categories: esthetic goal(28.2%), functional goal(32.1%), TMJ problem(9.0%), and psychosocial reason(30.7%). 7.
