ABSTRACT

Background: Nasal and non-nasal symptoms in allergic rhinitis (AR) can be assessed by measuring health related quality of life (HRQOL). Present study was to assess the impact of use of antihistaminic in AR which will affect the work productivity, sleep, frequent visits to health care professional and expenditure on medicines. For this evaluation, Rhinoconjuctivits Quality Of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) has been used. Methods: In this study 52 patients with AR were randomized in an open-label, 4-arm, parallel group, single center study. Questionnaire information was obtained about allergy-related RQLQ. Subjects received either Tablet Cetirizine 5 mg, Levocetirizine 5 mg, Loratidine 5 mg or Fexofenadine 120 mg. Changes from baseline until the end of study visit (1 week following) were evaluated by RQLQ.Results: When compared between treatment groups using one-way ANOVA it was observed that there is no variation in RQLQ overall Score in all the four treatment groups and there is no difference from treatment to treatment. Overall RQLQ score was reduced maximum in Levocetirizine group. Individual symptoms of RQLQ that is sleep score, non-hay fever, practical problem, nasal symptom score, Eye symptom Score, activities Score, and emotion score were also improved in the Levocetirizine group. Conclusions: Patients of all four study groups showed an improved perception of their HRQL according to the RQLQ. Significant improvements are reported in nasal symptoms, daily activities, sleep and psychological impact. Our results provide support for an AR and its impact on quality of life. Our recommendation stipulating that levocetirizine is superior to rest drug group for the treatment of AR with safety and tolerability.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the effects of application at different acupoints in improving the quality of life in allergic rhinitis patients. Method Seventy-seven patients with allergic rhinitis were randomized into a 12-point application group (39 cases) and a 6-point application group (38 cases), to receive Dong Bing Xia Zhi (treating cold-induced diseases in summer) application during each of the three periods of canicular days at corresponding points, 2 h each time. Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) was evaluated before and after the treatment, and half a year later. Result After the treatment, the total effective rate was 92.3% in the 12-point application group versus 71.1% in the 6-point application group, and the 12-point application group was significantly better (P<0.05); half a year later, the total effective rate was 87.2% in the 12-point application group versus 63.2% in the 6-point application group, and the 12-point group was significantly better (P<0.05); regarding the RQLQ, the 6-point application group didn't gain marked improvement in sleep quality after the treatment and half a year later (P>0.05), but the 12-point application group showed marked improvement (P<0.05); the rest component scores in RQLQ were significantly improved after the treatment and half a year later compared to those before the treatment in both groups (P<0.05); after the treatment, the 12-point application group was superior to the 6-point application group in comparing the reductionof all component scores and general score except the non-nose/eye symptoms score (P<0.05); half a year later, except the non-nose/eye symptoms and behavior scores, the 12-point application group was superior to the 6-point application group in comparing the reduction of all component scores and general score (P<0.05). Conclusion Dong Bing Xia Zhi acupoint application can effectively improve the quality of life in allergic rhinitis patients, especially with acupoints selected based on holism.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the Clinical study on the acupuncture ot zhibi 3 in the treatment of non-allergic rhinitis. Methods 20 individuals over 15 years old with non-allgergic rhinitis were prospectively recruited from rhinology clinic and ward of Beijing TongRen Hospital from December 2008 to August 2009.Acupuncture points of treat nasal 3 and the compatibility of Fengchi,Hegu were performed by once a week for 7 weeks. The changes of the total nasal symptom score (TNSS) and the Mini-Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (Mini-RQLQ) were observed at baseline and recertification every week. Results After 7 weeks treatment,we found the fourth week of score in fatigue (0.5±0.2; 2.6±1.2,respectively),embarrassed (1.0±0.3; 3.7-0.3,respectively),sleep (0.8±0.1; 4.1±0.9,respectively)、the quality of life (1.0±0.4; 3.8±0.7,respectively),congestion (0.6±0.4; 2.6± 1.0,respectively),rhinorrhea (1.2±0.5; 4.4±0.7,respectively),sneezing (1.6±0.5; 5.0±0.6,respectively),nasal itching (1.7±0.6; 4.4±0.9,respectively) were significantly improved over 75% (15/20) compared with the baseline (P<0.05).However,at the sixth week, congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing were recurring, especially rhinorrhea, but the benefit effects of acupuncture were more than 55% comparing with baseline.Contusion Acupuncture of zhibi 3,and Fengchi,Hegu may have the effective effects on non-allergic rhinitis.
