ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Resilience is the ability to adapt or recover after adverse situations. This study aimed to adapt and investigate evidence of the validity of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) for the Brazilian context. Method: The total sample comprised 1,937 people who participated in the study and the validity analysis was carried out with 1,480 people between 18 and 78 years of age. It was carried out using translation, back-translation, descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Item Response Theory, the ROC curve and BRS correlation with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale - 10-item version (CD-RISC-10), the Social Support Perception Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire - 2-item version (PHQ-2), and sociodemographic data. Results: The results showed the adequacy of the Brazilian version of the BRS (BRS-BR), alpha of 0.80, omega = 0.81, one factor, good information capacity of the items (except for item 5) and correlation with the CD-RISC-10 (rho = 0.64), PHQ-2 (rho = - 0.38) and Social Support (rho = 0.14). There was also a correlation with sex (rho = 0.11), age (rho = 0.13), marital status (rho = 0.15) and schooling (rho = 0.15). The ROC curve shows a cutoff point at 10 points for low resilience and 21 points for high resilience. Conclusions: The investigation of the psychometric characteristics of the BRS-BR showed that the instrument can be useful for the evaluation of resilience in the Brazilian context.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Resilient individuals have a comprehensive ability to adapt to various life circumstances. Psychological resilience predicts an individual’s physiological response to stress. The 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) is a widely used measure to quantify the level of self-perceived resilience. This study examined the psychometric properties of a Korean version of the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (10-item K-CD-RISC) on workers in Gumi, South Korea, exposed to hydrofluoric acid (HF). METHODS: The questionnaires included the 10-item K-CD-RISC and Beck Anxiety Inventor (BAI), the Impact of Event Scale-Revised-Korean version (IES-R-K), the Rosen-berg Self Esteem Scale (RSES), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). These were randomly distributed at 237 workplaces near the HF-spill site, in the Gumi 4 complex. The responses of 991 (67.3%) workers were analyzed. RESULTS: The exploratory factor analysis shown that a single-factor model was consistent with the original design of the 10-item CD-RISC. The scale also demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.95). Scores on the scale reflected different levels of resilience with respect to personal factors (age, gender, marital status, and education and income levels) that are thought to be differentiated. Differences of resilience were also reflected by psychiatric symptoms (anxiety and depression). Moreover, the total score of scale positively correlated with RSES, whereas the IES-R-K, BAI, CES-D, and the PSS negatively correlated with the 10-item K-CD-RISC. CONCLUSIONS: The 10-item K-CD-RISC has good psychometric properties and is applicable for victims exposed to noxious chemical such as HF.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the relation among clinical nurses′resilience, emotional, the pressure load and self-efficacy with the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Methods A total of 449 nurse in Guangzhou were recruited to investigate by 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), Kessler 10 Scale (K10), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Chinese Stress Overload Scale (SOS). Results The average score was 23.6±6.7 for CD-RISC-10 , 24.4±8.2 for K10,24.7±5.7 for GSES , 63.3 ±16.6 for SOS ,and the individual vulnerability scoring was (31.2±10.0) points, events load was (32.0±7.5) points. High mental toughness of nurses in general self-efficacy scores higher than that of low mental toughness group (t=-8.53, P<0.01), in the K10 dated, S0S scores were lower than low mental toughness group (t=11.23, 7.70, P<0.01). Nurse relevant regression analysis results showed that gender, general self-efficacy, K10 dated, SOS as the main factors influencing nurses mental toughness, could explain 40%of variances. Conclusions The CD-RISC-10 can better reflect the level of clinical nurses′resilience, and the gender, self-efficacy were the main effects, as well as effectively predict the nurses′emotional distress and stress level. However how to improve the toughness of the clinical nurses need more research.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper aimed to know the level of resilience from a sample of university students in a public institution of education in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. In addition to that, the relationship and difference between resilience and the variables of gender, age and socioeconomic status were analyzed. For this research, it was used the Resilience Scale developed by Wagnild and Young (1993) in the version translated and adapted to Spanish by Heilemann, Kury and Lee (2003), which consists of 25 reagents in the Likert scaling. This was used to measure the variable of interest. The results show high levels of resilience in university students and there were no significant differences between the career, sex and age variables. It was concluded that high resilience is a very generalized characteristic in the majority of college students. Finally, further research with other sample sizes and other careers is highly recommended. Likewise, the works, not included in this study, that relate resilience to other psychosocial variables are recommended as well.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) measures various aspects of psychological resilience in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychiatric ailments. This study sought to assess the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (K-CD-RISC). METHODS: In total, 576 participants were enrolled (497 females and 79 males), including hospital nurses, university students, and firefighters. Subjects were evaluated using the K-CD-RISC, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Test-retest reliability and internal consistency were examined as a measure of reliability, and convergent validity and factor analysis were also performed to evaluate validity. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha coefficient and test-retest reliability were 0.93 and 0.93, respectively. The total score on the K-CD-RISC was positively correlated with the RSES (r=0.56, p<0.01). Conversely, BDI (r=-0.46, p<0.01), PSS (r=-0.32, p<0.01), and IES-R scores (r=-0.26, p<0.01) were negatively correlated with the K-CD-RISC. The K-CD-RISC showed a five-factor structure that explained 57.2% of the variance. CONCLUSION: The K-CD-RISC showed good reliability and validity for measurement of resilience among Korean subjects.
