ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on allergic rhinitis and its influence on the patients' quality of life. Method Seventy-two patients with allergic rhinitis were allocated, according to different protocols, to control and observation groups, 36 cases each. The control group received conventional Western drug treatment and the observation group, acupuncture and moxibustion. Both groups were treated for three consecutive months. The effects were evaluated after the completion of treatment. VCAM-1, interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The quality of life was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF. The clinical therapeutic effects and the influences on the patients' quality of life were compared between the two groups. Result The total efficacy rate was 97.2% in the observation group, which was higher than 86.1% in the control group (P<0.05). There were no statistically significant pre-treatment differences in VCAM-1, IL-4, IL-6 and IL-10 levels between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, VCAM-1, IL-4, IL-6 and IL-10 levels decreased in both observation and control groups compared with before (P<0.05) and were lower in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the physical health, psychological health, social relationships, environment and independent ability scores increased in both observation and control groups compared with before (P<0.05) and were higher in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture and moxibustion has a definite therapeutic effect on allergic rhinitis. It can reduce the levels of inflammatory factors and improve the patients' quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objective To detect serum IgG4 and IgE levels in children with allergic asthma and rhinallergosis to provide an im-portant laboratory evidence for its diagnosis ,treatment and prevention. Methods The serum IgG4 and IgE levels were detected in 118 children patients with allergic asthma ,167 children patients with rhinallergosis and 150 healthy children(control group) under-going physical examination in the same period. Results The levels of serum IgG4 and IgE in the allergic asthma group and rhinal-lergosis group were significantly higher than those in the control group ,the difference was statistically significant (P0.05).Conclusion Serum IgG4 and IgE have a certain clinical significance in the occurrence ,treatment and surveillance of allergic asthma and rhinallergosis in children.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of warm needling at Yintang (GV 29) plus ginger-partitioned moxibustion in treating allergic rhinitis.Method Seventy patients with allergic rhinitis were randomized into a treatment group and a control group,35 cases each. The treatment group was intervened by warm needling at Yintang (GV 29) plus ginger-partitioned moxibustion;the control group was treated with conventional medication. After 4-week treatment, the clinical efficacies of the two groups were compared.Result The markedly effective rate and total effective rate were respectively 83.9% and 96.8% in the treatment group, versus 56.3% and 75.0% in the control group, and the between-group differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Warm needling at Yintang (GV 29) plus ginger-partitioned moxibustion is an effective approach in treating allergic rhinitis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the effects of application at different acupoints in improving the quality of life in allergic rhinitis patients. Method Seventy-seven patients with allergic rhinitis were randomized into a 12-point application group (39 cases) and a 6-point application group (38 cases), to receive Dong Bing Xia Zhi (treating cold-induced diseases in summer) application during each of the three periods of canicular days at corresponding points, 2 h each time. Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) was evaluated before and after the treatment, and half a year later. Result After the treatment, the total effective rate was 92.3% in the 12-point application group versus 71.1% in the 6-point application group, and the 12-point application group was significantly better (P<0.05); half a year later, the total effective rate was 87.2% in the 12-point application group versus 63.2% in the 6-point application group, and the 12-point group was significantly better (P<0.05); regarding the RQLQ, the 6-point application group didn't gain marked improvement in sleep quality after the treatment and half a year later (P>0.05), but the 12-point application group showed marked improvement (P<0.05); the rest component scores in RQLQ were significantly improved after the treatment and half a year later compared to those before the treatment in both groups (P<0.05); after the treatment, the 12-point application group was superior to the 6-point application group in comparing the reductionof all component scores and general score except the non-nose/eye symptoms score (P<0.05); half a year later, except the non-nose/eye symptoms and behavior scores, the 12-point application group was superior to the 6-point application group in comparing the reduction of all component scores and general score (P<0.05). Conclusion Dong Bing Xia Zhi acupoint application can effectively improve the quality of life in allergic rhinitis patients, especially with acupoints selected based on holism.

ABSTRACT

In a cross-sectional study performed with clincial features and laboratory tests, a group of workers aged 17-35 years old with clinical signs of sneeze, stuffy, nose catarrh. Prick-test positive to indoor dust antigen were evaluated from assessing invivo and invitro test in allergic rhinitis. Most of rhinitis patients had got allergic history and typical functional symptom as above mentioned sign and associated symptoms such as dried cough, itching throat, minimizing sense of smell. In nearly 25% there were broncho-asthma and non-typical increase of bronchial reaction. In clinical tests: Prick test on skin had got high sensity with simple technique, safety and low cost, it could be realized at any levels. The test of nasal stimuli was a biological test with high diagnostic value, simply and safety.
