ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a portal and informetric and scientometric indicators allowing researchers, publishers, information specialists and policy makers in science, especially in underdeveloped countries, monitoring of performance and impact of their contributions all over world. He uses the extensive collection of literature available in Scopus. Third among other alternatives, to rank serials processed by Scopus, according to indicators such as SCImago Journal Rank (2008), total material published in the last three years (2005-2007), the number of citations received by these materials during the year under review (2008), the average citations per paper for the past two years (2006-2007), among others; to find the location of countries according to total papers published between 1996 and 2008, the number of citations received by them, the average use of their contributions or other; the analysis of a country according to variables such as productivity, number of citations, average citations per paper, the proportion of documents cited and not cited, the percentage of total production at the region where the country is located and so on; the comparison according to various indicators between countries or serials, as well as the generation of thematic maps. The platform that offers SCImago is an alternative very competent to services in these fields for years has provided the former Institute for Scientific Information of the United States, with poor access for developing countries because of its subscription scheme.

ABSTRACT

The collective catalogue of serials as an instrument for the analysis of information demands in the National Medical Library of Cuba Information retrieval options of the Collective Catalogue of Serials in Medical Sciences (SECMED) are presented. The paper shows the importance of the correlator as a powerful tool for automated location of references obatained from reference searches carried out in MEDLINE data base an in the statistical analysis of the demand. An analysis was made on data recorded in the 3 statistical files where the results of searches in collective catalogue from may, 1997 and june, 1998 are stored. Subject fields and country were studied. Use of collections and of references requested from the National Mediacal Library by means of the correlator were examined to identify the most requested titles and their behaviour. The study of distribution of titles by subject detected titles lacking support as to serials and it was possible to find the most represneted countries when examining the collections by publishing country. The correlator of the collective catalogue is a resource of strategic importance for the National Information System of Medical Sciences.

ABSTRACT

Preliminary Proposal of Acquisitions of Primary Serial Publications for RESUMED. Selecting publications for the creation of a journal of abstracts is a complex and arduous task if it is taken into account the geometrical growth of the scientific literature and the budget cuts for adquisition that most information institutions currently face. A basic set of primary serial publications was chosen for its processing in RESUMED, the journal of abstracts that the National Center of Information on Medical Sciences publishes for the primary health care sector. With this goal, the Center drew an initial proposal based in the informetric criteria. Afterwards, the criterion of a sample of experts in the discussed issues was consulted. A list of 86 titles that embraces a preliminary selection of publications whose works must be analysed with the aim of processing its abstracts was obtained. The complementing of assesment by information specialists with that of experts in the studied disciplines constitutes a reasonable way for determining the information sources with the highest quality and usefulness.

ABSTRACT

Objective To assess the relationship between the concentration of total suspended particle (TSP) and cerebral-cardiovascular disease mortality of urban residents in Fushun city, China. Methods The data of cerebral-cardiovascular disease mortality and TSP concentration from 1999 to 2003 in Fushun city were collected. The association between TSP concentrations and the mortality of cerebral-cardiovascular diseases was analyzed using Poisson regression model adjusted for seasons, long-term patterns and meteorological variations using an ecological parametric method. Results As the concentration of TSP increased by 50 ?g/m3, OR of cerebral-cardiovascular disease mortality increase was 1.015 42 (95%CI=1.000 18-1.030 89) in the male group and 1.022 40 (95%CI=1.004 87-1.040 23) in the aged male group respectively, as 4-days lag TSP concentration increased by 50 ?g/m3, OR of cerebral-cardiovascular disease mortality increase was 1.008 26 (95%CI=1.000 57-1.016 02) in the whole people, 1.016 27 (95%CI=1.006 71-1.025 93) in the male group and 1.016 65 (95%CI=1.005 25-1.028 19) in the aged male group respectively. Conclusion Air pollution by TSP is considered as a risk factor for the increase of cerebral-cardiovascular disease mortality in Fushun city, China.
