ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: The present study is planned to assess the health related quality of life (HRQoL) in asthma patients by using HRQoL questionnaire (SF-36 v2).Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted for a period of 6 months (September 2017 to February 2018) in Navodaya Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Raichur on a total of 108 patients of either sex suffering from persistent asthma. The HRQoL of asthma patients was measured by face-to-face interview using HRQoL questionnaire (SF-36v2).Results: Female patients were found to be more affected with asthma compared to male patients and the prevalence of asthma is found to be more in the middle aged and elderly patients compared to adults. The important triggering factors for the asthma were found to be exposure to dust, smoking, alcohol and cooking fuel. The mean physical component summary (PCS) scores is 47.46 (±15.56) and the mean mental component summary (MCS) scores is 66.73 (±13.59). The findings of our study reveals that the physical HRQoL is more affected compared to mental HRQoL as revealed by PCS and MCS scores. Conclusions: The findings of our study conclusively suggest that the physical HRQoL is more affected than mental HRQoL in asthma patients and also the need to improve the quality of life in these patients by appropriate patient education regarding the triggering factors of asthma, preventive measures and the medication adherence.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the quality of life ( QoL ) and muscle strength in patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism ( PHP ) under regular treatment. Methods Twenty-three patients with PHP regularly followed at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from June 2017 to June 2018 were included. Age- and gender-matched 23 patients with nonsurgical hypoparathyroidism ( nHPT) and 23 healthy controls were also included. Short Form 36 Health Survey questionnaire version 2 ( SF36v2) were used to evaluate the QoL. Grip strength and repeated chair stand ( RCS) were used to assess muscle strength for upper and lower limbs respectively. Results Except for physical functioning, patients of PHP group had reduced scores in all other subdomains of SF36v2 compared to healthy controls ( P<0.05) . Comparing to nHPT patients, PHP patients had a higher score in social functioning, while no difference was found in other subdomains of SF36v2. Grip strength and RCS tests were similar in PHP patients and healthy controls. Conclusions Comparing to healthy controls, patients with PHP still had impaired QoL despite regular management, no significant difference of upper and lower limb muscle strength was found between PHP group and healthy controls.

ABSTRACT

Introduction@#The evolution of cardiac pacing is expected to decrease the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality but this type of intervention might affect the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and eventually the overall prognosis of the patient. This study assessed the HRQOL in patients with permanent pacemaker using Philippines (Tagalog) Short Form (SF)-36v2 health survey.Introduction:The evolution of cardiac pacing is expected to decrease the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality but this type of intervention might affect the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and eventually the overall prognosis of the patient. This study assessed the HRQOL in patients with permanent pacemaker using Philippines (Tagalog) Short Form (SF)-36v2 health survey.@*Methods@#A cross-sectional correlation study was conducted. Philippines (Tagalog) SF-36v2 health survey was administered among patients with permanent pacemaker who had their pacemaker analysis at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital from October to December 2015. The higher the score the better HRQOL and many studies used a cut-off point of 50. Pearson Correlation and Non-Parametric Mann-Whitney Tests were used in this study. @*Results@#Forty-two patients were enrolled in this study. There were 24 male and 18 females with mean interval of age 71.48+12.3. Most of the HRQOL scores were lower than 50. The highest HRQOL scores were vitality and mental health aspect while the worst were role emotional and physical functional aspect. Age, educational attainment, type of permanent pacemaker, pacemaker dependency, NYHA (New York Heart Association) functional capacity and presence of co-morbidities particularly diabetes mellitus type 2 were significant factors for poor HRQOL. @*Conclusion@#This study showed that overall the HRQOL in patients with permanent pacemaker was below average. A comprehensive management in order to improve the HRQOL should be considered among patients with permanent pacemaker.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aging process involves an inherent decrease in physiological abilities. The Handgrip Test (HT) and the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) are used to assess physical fitness in the elderly. The SF-36v2 questionnaire, including the physical component (PC), physical function (PF) and physical performance (PP) are used to assess the self-perceived health status. The scope of this study was to compare the physical fitness and the subject’s self-perception of health among septuagenarians and octogenarians and to examine the relationship between the variables. Fifty-seven septuagenarian and 26 octogenarian volunteers were recruited from the Ponte de Lima area, completed the SF-36v2 questionnaire and were tested on the HT and 6MWT. The t-Test and the Pearson coefficient of correlation were used for statistical analysis, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Significant differences were found between septuagenarians and octogenarians in PC (p = 0.025), HT (p < 0.05) and 6MWT (p < 0.001). The muscle strength, in septuagenarians, and cardiorespiratory capacity, in septuagenarians and octogenarians contributes significantly to the self-perception of physical health.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Calcaneal fractures are caused by high energy trauma and mostly are intra-articular fractures. Nondisplaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture (IACF) can be treated non-operatively. However, displaced intra-articular need to be reduced and fixed anatomically to facilitate early ankle rehabilitation and minimize functional impairment. This study was done to find out the outcome of the IACF patients who underwent operative treatment. Methods: 62 patients with IACF were selected in this study and had been followed up from June 2009 to May 2013. They were placed into two groups; the operative treated and non-operative treated groups. Bilateral ankle lateral view plain radiographs were taken for comparison of the Bohler and Gissane angles. Both groups of patients were assessed by the Maryland Foot Score (MFS) and the SF-36v2 general health survey questionnaire. The ability of the patients to perform activity of daily living (ADL) and /or return to work (RTW) was assessed as well. Results: The operative treatment group of displaced IACF patients achieved no significant better scores in the mean MFS and SF-36v2 mean scores as compared to non operated cases. There was no difference in RTW between the 2 groups, but earlier ADL was recorded in the operated group. However, this study had found 5 associated factors which causes major effect to the patients’ outcome to treatment. Conclusions: The patient’s compliance with post-operative rehabilitation regimen were found to be significantly related with the outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Health related quality of life (HRQL) and survival are two important outcome measures in chronic diseases. This study aimed to compared HRQL in patients with different chronic diseases of immune system and normative data from the general Portuguese Population. It was selected 103 out-patients, by convenience, to complete SF-36v2. The lowest scores were found among measures for general health (41.0), vitality (47.5), bodily pain (51.0), mental health (56.4); women, except for role-physical, and patients with auto-immune diseases have had the worse scores on all assessed dimension of subjective health, when compared with normative data. Highest scores were obtained in the following scales: physical functioning (69.1), social functioning (66.9), role-emotional (64.9). Living with chronic immune disease have impact on HRQL and it can be expected that the Portuguese version of SF-36v2 provide valid and reliable HRQL data.

ABSTRACT

The quality of life related to health is a construct that is being used with increasing frequency to evaluate the variables related to health from the perspective of the individual. In this study we analyzed the characteristics of the summarized descriptive scales of physical health components (CSF) and mental health components (MSC) from the SF-36 V2 in terminal patients with chronic renal insufficiency treated with hemodialysis. This is a cross sectional quantitative study with a population of patients with the previously quoted pathology controlled in the dialysis facilities in the area of Concepción, Chile in 2005. The sample consisted of 270 patients, which is 65 percent of the universe. The main instrument was the SF-36 for measuring the quality of life main variable. Socio-demographic variables were added. The instrument showed a high reliability for the components of physical and mental health with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.86, for each one. In general terms, the instruments CSF and MSC from the SF-36 properly capture the life conditions that people are experiencing, as is the case with nephropathy patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, who were the subject of this study.
