ABSTRACT

Introduction: The process of demineralization resulting from caries leads to the formation of white spots that are the first visible manifestation of the disease. Resin infiltrants appear as an alternative for the treatment of these non-cavitated lesions, since they are low viscosity resins and are part of the procedures that aim at a less invasive dentistry. Objective:This study aims to report the clinical experience in the use of a resin infiltrant, Icon,in white spot lesions of carious and non-carious etiologies in two different patients who were dissatisfied with the esthetics of their smiles.Methodology: On clinical examination, white lesions were observed in both patients. In the first patient,14 years old,the presence of caries activity and micro cavitations was verified. Thus, the treatment plan included supervised oral hygiene guidance, weekly application of fluoride varnish,Enamelast, adaptation of the environment with resin restorations, and, onlythen, the use of the infiltrant, Icon. The second patient, 11 years old, already had adequate oral health and had an esthetic complaint due to a non-carious white lesion, hypoplasia, whose treatment plan consisted of the use of Icon only. Conclusions:In both cases considerable esthetic improvement was obtained with this microinvasive procedure. Improvement in oral health, combined with the return of esthetics, can be observed with the use of resin infiltrants (AU).

ABSTRACT

Abstract Orthodontics patients usual develop demineralization and present cavity caries lesions after six months. Minimally invasive procedures have been the goal in modern dental practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ClinproTMXT Varnish, on the enamel surface roughness and severity of white spot lesions. Twenty premolars were submitted to bond brackets and experimental induction of demineralization and randomly divided into 2 groups: GI - fluoride varnish (Colgate Duraphat®); GII - Ionomeric Sealant (ClinproTMXT Varnish). The treatment was applied around the brackets. The surface roughness of specimens was analyzed, before treatment and 12 weeks after treatment by laser confocal microscopy, and the severity of the white spot lesion was by laser fluorescence device. The data were analyzed by non-parametric Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney Test, at 5% significance, roughness percentage reduction was performed. The severity of demineralization decreased in both, GI (p = 0.005) and GII (p = 0.019). Enamel superficial roughness levels decreased in GI and GII. As well as the roughness percentage, being more expressive in the ClinproTMXT Varnish group (85,09%). Colgate Duraphat® or Clinpro™ XT Varnish reduced the severity of the demineralization and decreased the superficial roughness on the enamel. The Clinpro™ XT Varnish was superior to superficial roughness on enamel.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate interaction of soil pH and acidity with weather on Rice Brown spot (BS) occurrence in rice lowlands. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Four distinct rice lowlands belonging to different climatic zones (forest, transitional and savanna) of Côte d’Ivoire during cropping seasons of 2021. Methodology: BS characterization were done in different farmer fields where soil samples were also collected during dry and rainy seasons. Soil silicon and acidity were determined in those samples and rice grain yield at harvest time were recorded in different sites. Weather data related to sites and seasons were used to find out correlations. Results: Occurrence of BS was found in forest zones with scores of 4 and 3 compared to 1 and 2 in savanna and transitional zones, respectively, with seasonal variation. Both rice production and the occurrence of BS were explained by soil parameters in conjunction with climatic parameters. Rainfall (R=0.38) and relative humidity (R=0.64) leaded BS occurrence and decrease of yield. Wind speed (R=0.62) and air maximum temperature (R= 0.63) were the determinant factors affecting rice yields. Si was found to be a component of sustainable soil management that interferes with soil pH in all climatic zones. Combined with Temperature, both soil parameters predicted BS occurrence over 50%. Conclusion: Temperature decrease BS pathogens occurrence whereas high humidity increases its spread. Those parameters combined with silicon which interferes with pH could leads sustainable solutions in BS control. Furthermore, having a deep understanding with rice varietal considerations can significantly improve strategies related to rice cultivation and protection.

ABSTRACT

Background: Correct mapping of the blind spot is important, as it serves as an estimate of fixation reliability. When the blind spot is not seen in the expected location in Humphrey visual field (HVF) printout, the clinician should give a thought to why this might be the case. Purpose: This video describes a series of cases, in which due to different reasons the blind spot could not be seen in the presumed expected location in the grayscale and numeric data of the HVF printout and the possible explanation behind this. Synopsis: When interpreting perimetry results, it is important to know whether the field test is reliable or not. A stimulus presented at the location of physiologic blind spot should not be seen by a patient with a steady fixation in Heijl– Krakau method. Responses will also occur, however, if the patient has a tendency for false?positive responses, or when the blind spot of the properly fixing eye is not in the location where the test stimulus is presented, because of anatomic variation, or if the patient's head is tilted while performing the test. Highlights: Perimetrist should recognize these potential artifact, during the test and relocate the blind spot. In case, such results are seen after finishing the test, it is recommended for the clinician to repeat the test

ABSTRACT

In Zherong county, Fujian province, the black spot of Pseudostellaria heterophylla often breaks out in the rainy season from April to June every year. As one of the main leaf diseases of P. heterophylla, black spot seriously affects the yield and quality of the medicinal material. To identify and characterize the pathogens causing black spot, we isolated the pathogens, identified them as a species of Alternaria according to Koch's postulates, and then tested their pathogenicity and biological characteristics. The results showed that the pathogens causing P. heterophylla black spot were A. gaisen, as evidenced by the similar colony morphology, spore characteristics, sporulation phenotype, and the same clade with A. gaisen on the phylogenetic tree(the maximum likelihood support rate of 100% and the Bayesian posterior probability of 1.00) built based on the tandem sequences of ITS, tef1, gapdh, endoPG, Alta1, OPA10-2, and KOG1077. The optimum conditions for mycelial growth of the pathogen were 25 ℃, pH 5-8, and 24 h dark culture. The lethal conditions for mycelia and spores were both treatment at 50 ℃ for 10 min. We reported for the first time the A. gaisen-caused black spot of P. heterophylla. The results could provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and control of P. heterophylla leaf spot diseases.

ABSTRACT

@#Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between peripheral blood and pleural effusion tuberculosis (TB) infection effector T cells, and to further evaluate the value of combined pleural effusion adenosine deaminase (ADA) for rapid diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy. Methods The test data of 80 cases of tuberculous pleurisy and 70 cases of nontuberculous pleurisy treated in the Sixth People's Hospital of Nantong City from January 2017 to December 2020 were analyzed. The TBinfected effector T cells were also detected simultaneously in the peripheral blood and the pleural effusion by the T-SPOT technique, and the pleural effusion ADA was detected by the rate method. The subject operating characteristic curve (ROC) was applied to take the optimal pleural effusion ADA threshold to compare the sensitivity and specificity of different critical values. Person phase analysis was applied to analyze the correlation between peripheral blood and pleural effusion T-SPOT.TB. Data of peripheral blood, pleural effusion T-SPOT.TB and ADA were integrated. Results When pleural effusion ADA>45 U/L, the sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy were 50.0% and 94.3%, respectively; when ADA > 25.15 U/ L, the sensitivity and specificity were 80.0% and 72.9%. When ADA > 45 U / L, pleural/ blood T-SPOT.TB spot ratio (spot forming cells, SFCs) > 2 times, the specificity for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy was 100% (highest); when 25.15 U/L< pleural effusion ADA ≤ 45 U/L, pleural/blood T-SPOT.TB spot ratio > 2 times, the specificity for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy was 92.3% (second). When pleural effusion ADA ≤ 25.15 U/L, and the pleural effusion/blood T-SPOT.TB spot number ratio > 2 times, with 83.3% specificity (the lowest of the three groups). Conclusions The level of pleural effusion ADA is one of the most used methods for diagnosing tuberculous pleurisy. Further combination of pleural effusion and blood T-SPOT.TB, if the ratio of pleural effusion / blood T-SPOT. TB spots is greater than 2 times, it can further improve the diagnosis rate of tuberculous pleurisy.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the efficacy of different bleaching methods on white-spot lesions of the enamel using optical coherence tomography and to evaluate its feasibility for monitoring the therapeutic effects on white-spot lesions. @*Methods@#Forty-eight sound premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons were selected and cut for 4 mm×4 mm×2 mm enamel blocks in buccal surfaces of the crowns. The samples were covered with acid-resistant varnish (except for the buccal surfaces) and immersed in demineralization solution for 18 days to establish the white-spot lesion models of the enamels. Samples were randomly divided into four groups (n=12). Group A was given demineralization only. Specimens in Group B, C and D were treated with 40% hydrogen peroxide, resin infiltration and 40% hydrogen peroxide combined with resin infiltration, respectively. Eight samples in each group were randomly selected. OCT was applied to observe the optical changes of the enamel surface and according to the OCT scanning results, the demineralization depth of enamel samples in each group was calculated. Then, the enamel blocks were embedded in epoxy resins, except the buccal surfaces, and measured for the microhardness values of the enamel surface by a microindentation hardness tester. Four samples in each group were cut longitudinally, and the ultrastructural changes of enamel samples in each group were observed by scanning electron microscope. @* Results@#OCT showed that the light scattering characteristics of enamel surface changed in all groups, and the bright layer was formed, but the thickness of bright layer in Group C and D was significantly lower than that in Group A and B (P<0.05). The microhardness values (kg/mm2) of the samples in Group A-D were (214.99±31.70), (250.66±33.64), (312.42±18.01) and(286.53±26.65), respectively. The microhardness of enamel surfaces in Group C and D was significantly higher than that in Group A and B (P<0.05), and the ultrastructure of enamel surfaces in Group C and D were more flat and dense in SEM observation (P<0.05). @*Conclusion@#The methods of resin infiltration therapy or 40% hydrogen peroxide combined with resin infiltration could effectively improve white-spot lesions of the enamel and the non-invasive OCT can be used as a better evaluation method for the diagnosis and treatment of white-spot lesions of the enamel.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aims of this clinical study were to evaluate the Color change - ΔE (based on spectrophotometry and visual analysis) and luminosity - L* (based on spectrophotometry) of dental enamel surface (after orthodontic treatment) around the area where orthodontic brackets were fixed, based on different cementing materials such as a resin (R group) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC group). The split-mouth study initially comprised 14 patients. Orthodontic brackets were fixed to the upper central incisors with resin or RMGIC. The color of the buccal surface of each tooth was measured through spectrophotometry and visual examination before the bracket-fixation process. Four individuals were excluded during the follow-up; thus 10 patients were evaluated (n=10). Brackets were removed after 12 months of orthodontic treatment, tooth color measurement and visual examination were performed again, and Adhesive Remaining Index (ARI) was also measured. ΔE and L* results were subjected to Student's t-test and by repeated-measures analysis of variance, respectively (α=0.05). ARI data were analyzed in percentages. There was statistically significant difference in ΔE between groups; the R group showed statistically higher values of L* after orthodontic treatment. ARI of 2 and 3 prevailed in the RMGIC group, whereas the R group presented 0 and 1. After orthodontic treatment, the RMGIC group presented smaller changes in ΔE, and the increase in the white scale was observed on the enamel surface around the area where brackets were fixed in the R group. The visual analysis did not show color change on the evaluated teeth.

O IRA 2 e 3 prevaleceu no grupo RMGIC, enquanto o grupo R apresentou 0 e 1. ABSTRACT

Background: Laser fluorescence (LF)–based clinical device DIAGNOdent™ is at present being used to detect caries. Can the same be used to detect therapeutic remineralisation of early white spot lesions? Aims: To explore the feasibility of using LF?based device in monitoring the changes following remineralisation of demineralised primary teeth. Materials and Method: The sample number for the present experimental in vitro study was 10. The LF based device readings were correlated with surface microhardness (SMH) test values to evaluate its efficiency. SMH analysis was performed using a microhardness tester (Tescol?HT1000AD). All the samples were demineralised, followed by remineralisation using fluoride varnish and pH cycling. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0 (IBM SPSS®) software. Paired t?test was performed to compare laser fluorescence readings and SMH test result values at baseline, after demineralisation, and after remineralisation. Pearson’s correlation was used to compare the relation between the laser fluorescence and SMH test. Results: A good negative correlation was seen between the two methods at the baseline readings even though it was not statistically significant (P = 0.069). A positive correlation between the methods existed following demineralisation which was not significant (P = 0.074). The correlation between the parameters following remineralisation showed a moderate negative correlation but was not significant (P = 0.55). Conclusion: DIAGNOdent™ values at baseline, after demineralisation, and after remineralisation was consistent with SMH values. Thus, DIAGNOdent™ can be explored to provide chairside assistance in identifying remineralisation of white spot lesions.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To investigate clinical implications of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) expression in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and Methods: E-cadherin and vimentin expression was studied in 50 newly diagnosed cases of OSCC who underwent surgical excision. EMT expression at non cold spot infiltrative margin and cold spot was studied and correlated with prognostic factors and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: EMT expression at the cold spot and non-cold spot infiltrative margin showed significant results with nodal status (P < 0.001, P < 0.009 respectively). On multivariate analysis, only EMT at the cold spot correlated significantly with prognostic factors (P < 0.030). The factors affecting DFS on Kaplan Meier index were EMT expression and differentiation (P < 0.002, P < 0.016 respectively) which proved significant in cox regression analysis. Conclusion: The study reveals that EMT expression at the cold spot is a significant biomarker for predicting lymph-node metastasis and tumor recurrence in OSCC.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To identify and correlate hypopigmented spots on fundoscopy with the leakage points on fluorescein angiography (FA) in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) to provide criteria for FA?free focal laser photocoagulation (FLP). Methods: Fifty consecutive patients of acute CSCR were evaluated between March and October 2019 confirming the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Colocalization of leakage points with discrete hypopigmented spots on clinical fundoscopy was evaluated using FA. Positive predictive value (PPV) was calculated to identify the status of association between these to formulate criteria for FA?free FLP of CSCR patients in future. Results: Out of the 50 eyes, 38 (76%) had a discrete hypopigmented spot on fundoscopy which coincided with the leakage point on FA. The PPV of finding a leakage point at the area of discrete hypopigmented spot is 95%. Colocalization with a pigment epithelial detachment was found in 25 (65.7%) of these 38 eyes. Retinal pigment epithelial irregularities were found associated in all of these 38 eyes. Subretinal homogenously hyperreflective material was found in 8 (21.05%) of 38 eyes. optical coherence tomography following FLP of leakage point in all cases showed complete resolution of CSCR in 47 (94%) eyes. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that hypopigmented spots on clinical fundus examination in CSCR patients, when present, coincide with the leakage point of FA. This may aid to undergo FA?free FLP treatment in CSCR patients

ABSTRACT

Mild brown and black spot diseases symptoms were detected on citrus varieties, Valencia and Navel fruits during season 2018 in some citrus orchards at North Egypt. Collected diseased fruit samples revealed isolation of Alternaria alternata and Phyllosticta citricarpa (McAlpine) van der Aa. Some organic acids, salts and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were evaluated against the diseases incidents in vitro and in vivo. Complete growth inhibition was recorded for fungi tested at 2g/L of salicylic acid, Potassium dihydrogen phosphate, Tri-Sodium polyphosphate and 2.5 g/L of S. cerevisiae. All pre-harvest treated Valencia trees, inoculated fruits revealed no diseases symptoms up to 10 days of storage period. Meanwhile, S. cerevisiae and salicylic acid treatments had extended protective effect up to 20 days. Control strategy through spraying Valencia orange trees with yeast or some organic acids and salts as pre-harvest approaches should be taken in consideration especially these diseases began to occur in North region of Egypt.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To analyze whether photoscreening can effectively detect amblyogenic risk factors in children with neurodevelopmental disability. Methods: A prospective study of 52 children attending a special school for children with neurodevelopmental disability from December 2017 to May 2018. All were initially tested with a photoscreening device: Welch Allyn® Spot® Vision Screener: model VS100 (Spot®) and further evaluated at a later date by a pediatric ophthalmologist, with a complete ocular evaluation including squint assessment, cycloplegic retinoscopy, and dilated fundus examination. The key parameters studied were demographic features, type of neurodevelopmental disability, refraction, ocular alignment, media clarity, any other ocular morbidity, and time taken for examination. The presence of amblyogenic risk factors (ARF) was analyzed as per the 2013 guidelines of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Results: The mean age was 10.5 years (range: 1–17.5 years). Males (73.1%) outnumbered females (26.9%). The most common neurodevelopmental disability was cerebral palsy. Simple myopic astigmatism was the most common type of refractive error. Presence of ARF in our study was 73.1%. The sensitivity and specificity of photoscreening in detecting ARF were 96.5% and 63.61%, respectively, with a positive predictive value of 80% and negative predictive value of 92.31%. The predictive ability of photoscreening was 79.9% as per the area under curve. The average time taken for photoscreening was less than 60 s. Conclusion: Photoscreening can detect ARF with high sensitivity and reasonable specificity and is a handy, useful, and time?saving tool in screening children with neurodevelopmental disability.

ABSTRACT

Lettuce bacterial leaf spot caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vitians is an aggressive disease that is difficult to control. So far there are no reports of the reaction of biofortified lettuce genotypes to different isolates of the bacteria. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the aggressiveness of X. campestris pv. vitians, as well as the reaction of biofortified lettuce genotypes to bacterial spot. Two experiments were performed in two distinct seasons (winter and summer), in greenhouse at the Vegetable Experimental Station of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). The experimental design in both experiments was a randomized block design, in a factor scheme of 5 × 4 (five genotypes and four strains), with four repetitions. Were evaluated the severity and the area under the disease progress curve. In general, the biofortified lettuce 'Uberlândia 10000' was more resistant to most bacterial strains in the summer cultivation, and in the winter period UFU 'Crespa 206'. The commercial cultivar Robusta was the most susceptible to the strains during both seasons. The UFU E125 strain was the most aggressive for most genotypes in both seasons.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the differences of the clinical characteristics and laboratory indexes in children with positive dense fine spot (DFS) type anti-nuclear antibody, and thereby to explore the value of positive DFS in the diagnosis of immunological diseases. Methods:Among 9 613 cases who were routinely tested for antinuclear antibody (ANA) from August 2017 to February 2020, there were 197 cases with DFS positive, who were subjected to a retrospective analysis. These patients were divided into the autoimmune diseases (AID) group (39 cases) and the non-AID group (158 cases) according to clinical diagnosis.Healthy children in the same physical examination were used as healthy control group (40 cases). T test was applied to analyze the differences of humoral immunity markers between AID and non-AID groups. What′s more, DFS positive patients in different clinical departments, initial symptom and the part of body were further compared. Results:Among 9 613 children tested for autoantibodies, 2 654 (27.61%) were ANA positive, with the highest detection rate of the spotted type and 197 DFS positive cases, accoun-ting for 7.42% of ANA positive children; 97 DFS positive male patients accounted for 8.20% (97/1 183 case) of ANA positive male patients, 100 DFS positive female patients accounted for 6.80% (100/1 471 cases) of ANA positive female patients, and there was no significant difference in the positive rate. The departments with high positive ANA detection included the nephrology department (27.88%) and the rheumatology department (24.83%). The departments with a higher ANA positive rate in DFS positive children included the gastroenterology department (13.25%) and the infectious department (11.76%). Among the children with DFS antibody positive, 39 cases had AID, among which 38 cases had organ-specific AID, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) had the highest detection rate in 13 cases. The diseases with a high DFS positive rate in 158 non-AID cases included allergic purpura (46 cases). Serum immunoglobulin (IgG) level in the AID group was significantly lower than this in the non-AID group, serum IgM and C 4 levels in AID children were significantly lower than those in the non-AID group and healthy control group, and the serum IgA level of DFS positive group was significantly higher than that of children in the healthy control group. All children with DFS antibody positive had no specific autoantibodies. Conclusions:DFS antibody positive is important for the diagnosis of systemic AID in children. The combined detection with the DFS, other autoimmunity antibody index, humoral immune function index contributes to the early differential diagnosis of autoimmune diseases in children.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#The antibacterial properties and bonding strength of 3M orthodontic adhesive resin modified by chlorhexidine acetate (CHA) composite mesoporous silica were investigated.@*Methods@# CHA with different mass fractions was encapsulated in mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) (denoted CHA@MSNs). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the samples. The 3M Z350XT flow resin was divided into 4 groups: group A: 3M+CHA@MSNs (0%); group B: 3M+CHA@MSNs (3%); group C: 3M+CHA@MSNs (5%); and group D: 3M+CHA@MSNs (6.4%), with mass scores of 0%, 3%, 5%, and 6.4%, respectively. The shear strength of the modified adhesive was tested by a universal electronic material testing machine, the adhesive residue was observed by a 10 × magnifying glass, and the adhesive Remnant index (ARI) was calculated. The four groups of modified adhesives were cultured with Streptococcus mutans. The OD540 value of the bacterial solution was measured by a spectrophotometer, and the amount of plaque attachment was observed by scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the antibacterial performance of the adhesives.@*Results@#Infrared spectroscopic analysis of CHA@MSNs showed that CHA was successfully loaded onto MSNs. Under scanning electron microscopy, it could be seen that, after Cha was combined with MSNs, the structure of MSNs changed, as the boundary was fuzzy and aggregated into a layered structure. A comparison of shear strength revealed a statistically significant difference between the groups containing CHA@MSNs and the groups without CHA@MSNs (P<0.05). The value of the shear strength in group D decreased the most, while there was no statistically significant difference between group B and group C (P > 0.05). There was no statistical significance across all groups (P > 0.05), suggesting that the addition of CHA@MSNs had little effect on the bracket shedding. The OD540 value of bacterial fluid indicated that the difference among groups A, B and C was statistically significant (P < 0.05), and the antibacterial effect of group C was the best; there was no statistically significant difference between group C and group D (P > 0.05).@*Conclusions@#Therefore, adding 5% CHA@MSN antibacterial agent significantly improved the antibacterial effect and did not affect the bond strength.
