ABSTRACT

The therapeutic touch therapists would recognize the physical variability of themselves, mainly on the increase fever of their palms, and the continuous responses of the physical variability of the patients, such as the stable breath, the decreasing respiration, the fever of the touched parts, through their daily therapy processes. But there is actually little study that would evaluate the therapeutic touch therapy effect between the therapists and the subjects.Previous studies have reported that the effects on the subjects, but these authors did not discuss about the therapists and the interactions between the therapists and subjects. Therefore, we examined to measure the continuous physical variability both of the therapist and the subjects, the same time and parts, before and after the abdominal therapeutic touch. And we intended to clarify the relationship and the interaction between the therapist and the subjects. We enrolled the female and male therapists, and each of them performed the therapeutic touch to six subjects. Each of the test was separated to three parts, before therapy (30min), therapy (10min) and after therapy (10min) period. We designed that the therapeutic touch therapy part of the subjects was on the abdomen, there would be considered empirically the sensitive point. The subjects were asked to rest supine and the measurement were the electrocardiogram R-R interval and the epidermal temperatures of the four Meridian points (ST9, HT7, CV7, LR3). The therapist was sitting on chair beside the subject during the experiment and the measurements were carried out the same time and method as the subjects. The results showed that the abdominal therapeutic touch (1) decrease the R-R interval of the therapist, that would indicate to increase the sympathetic activity, (2) increase the R-R interval of the subject, that would indicate to increase the parasympathetic activity, (3) increase the epidermal temperature of therapeutic touch related parts of the therapist, HT7, CV7, and ST9, (4) increase the epidermal temperature of therapeutic touch related parts of the subject, CV7 and LR3. That is to say that the R-R interval variability of the therapist against the subject were inverse, and according to the abdominal therapeutic touch process, the epidermal temperature of the upper regions, above the abdomen, neck and wrist belong to the therapist would increase, while these of under regions, below the abdomen and the instep belong to subjects would increase. More detail, during the experiments, both of the therapist totally showed the similar therapeutic touch effects, but also suggested the characteristics of their performance to the subjects.Under these designed experiments, especially the same time continuous measurement of the variability, both of the therapist and the subjects, we could reveal that the rapid interaction and the dynamic relationship between the therapist and the subjects.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the differences in the clinical therapeutic effects on cervical spondylosis of vertebral artery type (CSA) between the modified acupuncture and the routine acupuncture at unilateral/bilateral Renying (ST 9) as well as the impacts on the concentrations of plasma neuropeptide Y (NPY) and urotensinⅡ(UⅡ) in the patients.

METHODSA total of 160 patients were divided into a modified bilateral acupuncture group, a modified unilateral acupuncture group, a routine bilateral acupuncture group and a routine unilateral acupuncture group, 40 cases in each one according to the random number table. In the modified bilateral acupuncture group, the modified acupuncture was applied bilaterally to Renying (ST 9). In the modified unilateral acupuncture group, the modified acupuncture was applied unilaterally to Renying (ST 9). In the routine bilateral acupuncture group, the routine acupuncture was applied bilaterally to Renying (ST 9). In the routine unilateral acupuncture group, the routine acupuncture was applied unilaterally to Renying (ST 9). The treatment was given once every day, continuously for 6 days as one course. Two courses of treatment were required at the interval of 1 day. In each group, before and after treatment, we observed the peak systolic blood flow velocity (Vs) of the vertebral artery (VA) and the basilar artery (BA), cervical vertigo symptoms and functional assessment scales (ESCV) and the concentration of plasma NPY and UⅡ. The clinical therapeutic effects were compared among the groups.

RESULTSAfter treatment, the clinical therapeutic effect in the modified bilateral acupuncture group was 90.0% (36/40), which was better than 80.0% (32/40) in the modified unilateral acupuncture group, 77.5% (35/40) in the routine bilateral acupuncture group and 65.0% (26/40) in the routine unilateral acupuncture group (all <0.05). After treatment, Vs of VA and BA was improved remarkably in every group (all <0.01), and the result in the modified bilateral acupuncture group was higher than those in the other groups (all <0.01). After treatment, ESCV scores were all increased remarkably in every group (all <0.01). ESCV score and improvement index in the modified bilateral acupuncture group were all higher than those in the other groups (<0.05, <0.01). After treatment, the concentrations of plasma NPY and UⅡ were all reduced remarkably in every group (all <0.01) and the differences were significant among the groups (all <0.01).

CONCLUSIONThe modified bilateral acupuncture at Renying (ST 9) effectively regulates the blood supply of the vertebral basilar artery and improves the cerebral circulation. The effects are superior to those of the unilateral acupuncture at Renying (ST 9).

ABSTRACT

According totheory, academicianestablished the acupuncture technique "controllingto regulate blood pressure" which focused on Renying (ST 9), and achieved favorable effects in clinical application. In this paper, based on thetheory, from aspects of,,andand relations among, blood and veins in TCM, and cardiac output, sympathetic nerve activity and blood vessels in modern medicine, the understanding on hypertension was explained. As a result, both TCM and modern medicine had consistency in the understanding of hypertension, reflecting the scientificity and practicability of this acupuncture technique. Besides, according totheory and "wind leading to vertigo" theory, academicianbrought forward the key pathogenesis of hypertension was "dysfunction of", and the acupoint selected Renying (ST 9), Quchi (LI 11), Hegu (LI 4), Zusanli (ST 36) and Taichong (LR 3). At the same time, the operation specification of each acupoint was mainly discussed, and the references of acupoint selection was explained based on TCM theory and modern clinical research.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo establish a surface location method and acupuncture manipulation standard by dissecting the local structure of rat point Renying(ST9)and make a validation through the hypotensive effect of acupuncture.MethodA Wistar rat was sacrificed and fixed by cryogenic freezing. According the anatomical characteristics of human point Renying, cervical point Renying region was dissected layer by layer, and the common carotid artery, the internal carotid artery and the external carotid artery were bluntly separated. Location and measurement were made using vernier calipers and digital photographs were taken. Body surface location and acupuncture point depth were statistically analyzed to establish acupuncture manipulation standards. Point Renying and a non-acupoint were separately acupunctured to treat rat spontaneous hypertension. The changing tendency of blood pressure was statistically analyzed after four weeks.ResultAccording to the 95% reference value range, the surface location of rat point Renying was determined to be (8±0.3)mm below a line connecting bilateral mandibular angles and (5.5±0.4)mm lateral to the anterior midline, one on each side. Acupuncture manipulation standards were perpendicular insertion (5.5±0.4)mm and cautious lifting and thrusting to avoid injuring the artery. Acupuncture at point Renying had a marked hypotensive effect as compared with a non-acupoint (P<0.05).ConclusionThe surface location of rat point Renying is reliable and can be applied to animal experimental study.
