ABSTRACT

The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr., 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the main pests of sugarcane. This pest can reduce the quality and yield of the crop. Information on the quality and yield of cultivars in relation to the attack of sugarcane borer are necessary, since they guide the choice of the best materials for use in joint with other management tactics. Two field experiments were conducted in 2011 and 2012 to compare the quality and yield of 16 commercial sugarcane cultivars (IACSP93-3046, IACSP94-2094, IACSP94-2101, IAC91-1099, IACSP95-5000, IAC87-3396, RB92579, RB867515, RB966928, CTC2, CTC4, CTC9, CTC11, CTC15, CTC18 and SP86-0042) relative to the natural infestation of D. saccharalis. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. There was no difference between treatments for infestation index, with averages of 1.2 to 8.7% of bored internodes. Higher percentages of internodes with red rot were observed for CTC9, CTC2 and RB966928. The cultivars CTC4 and RB92579 infested with D. saccharalis resulted in lower technological quality, due the reduction in the contents of brix, apparent sucrose content (POL) and purity; and increase of the reducing sugars and, consequently, lower theoretically recoverable sugar (TRS). On the other hand, the lowest yields (t of cane ha-1) were observed for CTC18, IACSP94-2094, IACSP94-2101 and RB966928. Therefore, according to the hierarchical cluster analysis (UPGMA), the cultivars RB867515, CTC11, IAC91-1099, CTC15, SP86-0042, CTC2 and IACSP94-3046 were resistant to D. saccharalis.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Although there are evidences that the proper supply of mineral nutrients to plants relieves water stress, little is known on the approach of how the drought affects the absorption and accumulation of nutrients by distinct sugar cane genotypes, or in different parts of a same plant. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the content and accumulation of N, P and K in the aerial part of plant from three genotypes of sugar cane, submitted to three water potentials in the soil, and check the relationship of these variables with the tolerance of plants to prolonged drought. In order to access this objective, an experiment under greenhouse conditions, comprised by a fatorial 3 × 3, in a randomized block design, and four replicates was carried out. After 90 days from treatment imposition, the plant transpiration rate, plant dry mass, concentration of N, P and K were determined in leaves and culms, as well as in total plant shoot were measured. It was found that tolerance to drought in sugar cane is related to higher levels of N and K in the leaves and stems, and larger accumulations of K and P in the plant shoot. There is high positive correlations among accumulation of N, P and K in the plant shoot and dry matter production by plants submitted to drought. There are intermediate correlations among plant transpiration and nutrient uptake by plants under drought. Plants of the genotype SP81-3250 are more tolerante to prolonged drought, than the RB855453 and IACSP95-5000 plants.

ABSTRACT

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) production is influenced by various abiotic stresses, including salt stress. Salinity can induce oxidative stress, which in turn damages biomolecules and cellular structures. However, such damage can be avoided or minimized by the enzymatic and non-enzymatic defense systems of plants. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of exogenous proline on Na+ and K+ content and on the activity of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase in two sugarcane genotypes (RB931011 and RB872552) grown in vitro under salt stress. The plants were grown for 20 days with or without 100 mM NaCl and exposed to 20 mM proline for varying period of time. The data were subjected to ANOVA factorial (two genotypes and five treatments), and the mean values were compared by Tukey test at a 5 % probability. Under salinity stress, both genotypes exhibited membrane integrity reduction, reduced total soluble protein content and unaltered or increased endogenous proline content. Exogenous proline reduced Na+ accumulation in a manner proportional to the exposition period at the amino acid. In both genotypes, antioxidant enzymes activity increased with the addition of NaCl. In conclusion, RB931011 genotype showed higher proline accumulation and increased in activity of the antioxidant enzymes, indicating better salt stress tolerance than in RB872552 genotype.

ABSTRACT

This experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of detoxified castor bean meal (CM) content on the chemical-bromatological composition, as well as the fermentation characteristics and dry matter losses of sugarcane silage. The treatments consisted of four levels (0, 7, 14 and 21% natural matter) of addition of castor bean meal. The design was completely randomized, with five replicates. The material was ensiled in PVC silos of 50-cm in height and 10-cm in diameter, which were opened after 60 days. The density of fodder maintained in the silos was equal to 750kg of natural matter/m3. In order to quantify the gas and effluent losses, the silos were weighed at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. The addition of castor bean meal has increased the levels of DM and crude protein and reduced the levels of neutral detergent fiber, N-NH3, ethanol, and gas and effluent losses from silages, but did not affect pH values. During ensiling, alcoholic fermentation was controlled with the inclusion of the additive.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides used in their recommended doses, on the activity of the microbiota and sugar cane growth. For this, seven herbicides (tembotrione, MSMA, hexazinone + diuron, sulfentrazone, trifloxysulfuron-sodiun, and tebuthiuron cloamzone) were applied in pots containing 12 dm3 substrate (soil + fertilizer) at 50 days after sugarcane planting. The effects of these products on the evolution of soil CO2 (CO2-C), in the microbial biomass carbon (MBC), metabolic quotient (qCO2), enzyme activity in the rhizosphere acid phosphomonoesterase in rhizosphere soil samples collected at 44 days after herbicide application (DAT) and the growth effects at 77 DAT. Initially herbicides MSMA, clomazone, sulfentrazone and trifloxysulfuron-sodium caused poisoning in culture. However, only plants treated with trifloxysulfuron-sodium, these symptoms remained visible at harvest of the experiment. The effects of herbicides on microbial activity rizoferica of sugar cane, sulfentrazone and tebuthiuron reduced CO2-C and MSMA herbicide clomazone and reduced the CBM soil. The herbicide clomazone was that caused the greatest impact on microbial activity because of the increased value qCO2. Moreover, the sulfentrazone reduced values of that variable, contributing to the balance of microflora in the soil. No influence of herbicides on the activity of acid phosphomonoesterase rhizospheric on the sugarcane soil.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to clone and characterize a full length cDNA of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (SoPAL). Differential tissue expression pattern of the SoPAL transcript and its enzyme activity was also analyzed during the tillering stage of growth. The full-length of SoPAL cDNA was 2118 bp long and contained a protein with 706 amino acids, determined by encoding technique. The amino acid sequence and phylogenic analysis of the cloned SoPAL showed high similarity to PAL from other monocotyledonous such as sorghum (96%), maize (93%) and Bamboos (87.12%). The highest levels of SoPAL transcript were observed in the root and stem, while its minimal gene expression levels were in the leaves and sheath, respectively. The highest level of SoPAL enzyme activity was in the leaves. These results helped to understanding the characteristics of PAL biosynthesis and its regulation at the molecular level in sugarcane. This information could be critical for the manipulation of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis in the plant using biotechnological processes.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to induce direct somatic embryogenesis from segments of immature leaves of the RB872552 variety of sugarcane and to correlate this morphogenic event with oxidative stress. Two previously described protocols were utilized for the induction of somatic embryogenesis in sugarcane with different supplementations of the culture medium and different incubation conditions. For the conversion of embryos into plants was used MS medium without phytoregulators. Histological analyses and activity of antioxidant enzymes were also conducted for the embryogenic and non-embryogenic tissues. The formation of somatic embryos was obtained in 81 % of the explants with the combination of regulators 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid)and BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) when incubated under 16 h photoperiod. With regards to the antioxidant enzymes, there was increased activity of peroxidase and an increase in the soluble protein content in embryogenic tissues, whereas lower activities of polyphenol oxidase and catalase appeared in these tissues compared to nonembryogenic tissues. It could be inferred that oxidative stress plays an important role in the induction of somatic embryogenesis in sugarcane.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: policosanol, a mixture of high molecular weight aliphatic alcohols purified from sugarcane with octacosanol as the main component, shows cholesterol-lowering and antiplatelet effects in addition to an inhibitory effect on type I cicloxygenase. OBJECTIVE: to determine whether policosanol may inhibit 5-LOX enzyme activity in vitro. METHODS: effects on 5-LOX enzyme activities were assessed in rat blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Vehicle or Policosanol suspensions (0.6 to 6 000 µg/mL) were added to tubes containing the reaction mix and then absorbance changes at 234 nm were measured. RESULTS: added Policosanol inhibited in vitro 5-LOX activity by 30 percent, which was not a significant figure but depended on the concentration(r= 0.992; p< 0.05); it was 1 250 µg/mL. CONCLUSIONS: policosanol did not significantly inhibit 5-LOX enzyme activity in rat PMNL preparations, so that it does not seem to be a dual inhibitor of COX and-LOX enzymes. This result differs from that found for beeswax alcohols and underlines the different effects of the mixtures of long-chain fatty alcohols purified from the sugarcane and the beeswax(AU).

ABSTRACT

Background: Sugarcane is one of the world's largest crop. It grows in the tropical and subtropical regions, and its harvest provides 80% of the world's sugar. In Latin America unrefined cane sugar is widely available and much less expensive than refined sugar. Sugarcane is a crop of great interest in Colombia due to the economic impact on the rural population and its application as sweetener agent. The powder of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is widely used as a raw material in a wide range of industries such as foods, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical. Objectives: The aim of the research work was the evaluation of the adsorption thermodynamics of sugarcane powder obtained by spray drying technology. Methods: The adsorption isotherms of sugarcane powder were evaluated at temperatures of 4 ± 0.1, 20 ± 0.2 and 30 ± 0.3 °C and its thermodynamic properties such as Gibbs free energy (G), differential heat of adsorption (∆H) and differential entropy (∆S) were calculated as a function of moisture content. Experimental data of adsorption isotherms were fitted to the GAB (Guggenheim Andersen - de Boer), BET (Brunauer Emmett - Teller), Henderson, Caurie, Smith, Hasley, Peleg, and Oswin models. Results: The results showed a type-II sigmoidal behavior, with temperature having a statistically significant effect. The GAB equation showed a better fit to the experimental data modeling (0.11≤aw≤0.87) although all models showed validity and goodness of fit to the experimental data. The net isosteric heat increased to a maximum value (57 kJ mol-1) and then decreased with the increase in moisture content. Conclusions: The sugarcane powder with maltodextrin, obtained by spray drying got low adsorption thermodynamic stability, as it required very low energy to occur this phenomenon, being obtained the maximum net isosteric heat when moisture content of 4.7% (d.b). This value is within the range of the monolayer moisture content found in the GAB and BET models.

Introduction: D-003, an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) purified from sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) wax with cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant effects, is composed of a mixture of free saturated very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), each within specific relative concentration ranges as determined by the gas chromatography (GC). However, the spectroscopic characterization of D-003 had not been previously reported. Objective: to characterize the active pharmaceutical ingredient named D003 in accordance to its ultraviolet (UV), infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass (MS) spectra. Methods: samples of six batches of D-003 (CNIC, Cuba) were evaluated by UV, FTIR, NMR-¹H, NMR-13C, and GC-MS techniques. For obtaining the mass spectra of D-003 acids, methyl (FAME) and trimethylsilyl ester derivatives were used. Quantification of free very long chain saturated fatty acids , analyzed as methyl ester derivatives, was made by GC with flame ionisation detector (FID). Results: UV, FTIR, and ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectra showed that active pharmaceutical ingredient D-003 was composed of a mixture of free very long chain fatty acids, whereas the GC-MS and GC-FID techniques allowed ensuring the occurrence of 13 VLCFAs in set proportions: C24:0 (0.2-0.6 percent), C25:0 (0.4-0.9 percent), C26:0 (2.0-3.1 percent), C27:0 (2.1-2.7 percent), C28:0 (30.0-37.5 percent), C29:0 (1.5-1.7 percent), C30:0 (17.0-18.6 percent), C31:0 (0.9-1.2 percent), C32:0 (6.9-8.9 percent), C33:0 (0.9-1.3 percent), C34:0 (7.2-11.1 percent), C35:0 (0.3-0.6 percent) and C36:0 (2.2-3.8 percent). Conclusions: evidences from the UV, FTIR, NMR and GC-MS spectroscopic techniques prove that D-003 is composed of 13 saturated very long chain fatty acids, including octacosanoic acid as the most abundant one(AU)

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted using two byproducts of regional agribusinesses - sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) marc and cheese whey. These by-products have low nutritional value alone, but when combined can be recycled for use in ruminant feed. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the chemical composition of by-products such as silage with or without addition of corn grain. Experimental silos were made with PVC pipes 10 inches in diameter by 50 cm long, containing the following treatments: control diet - sugar cane marc with added water; treatment 1 - sugar cane marc with added whey cheese, and treatment 2 - sugar cane marc with added whey and corn grain, with three replicates each. Samples of material before ensiling and after opening the silos were collected to evaluate the percentage of dry matter (DM), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), ash and pH. The highest percentage of MS was obtained in serum-containing and corn silage. The percentages of crude protein and ash were little affected by treatments. The pH values were in the acceptable standard for good quality silage. The addition of serum and improved corn grain DM, FDA and pH of silages. These results demonstrated that the addition of whey silage and corn showed better results in the percentage of MS, FDA and pH of silages, which justifies its use in ruminant feed.

ABSTRACT

The fertilizing inadequate by means of organic residues can add heavy metals to soils and plants. Thus, this study evaluated the movement of heavy metals in the soil and in sugarcane in the region of Uberlândia- MG, after fertilization with chemical fertilizer and organic waste, at different depths and cane growth periods. The study area was the farm of Cia Mineira de Açúcar e Álcool do Triângulo Mineiro Ltda, located in the municipality of Uberlândia, State of Minas Gerais. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 5x2x4 factorial, with split plots in time, corresponding to five fertilizer types: chicken bedding (CF), turkey bedding (CP), composted manure (AC), cattle manure (EB) and the control, all combined with the presence or lack of agricultural gypsum; analyzed at four depths and at two times. The heavy metals was evaluated in the soil, sugarcane stalk and leaves. The results obtained were submitted to analysis of variance and the averages of the factors compared by the Tukey test at 0.05 significance. The heavy metals contents in the stalks were smaller in time 2. In contrast, heavy metals stalk contents did not exceed the critical limit. No Cd and Cr were detected in the soil, while Ni and Pb were below the critical contamination limit. Agricultural gypsum did not affect the levels of micronutrients or heavy metals in the soil or in the sugarcane.

ABSTRACT

This work had the aim of evaluating the growth standard and yield of different sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) varieties with meteorogical parameter, during the plant and ratoon crop cane in Mesas regions of Alagoas. This work was carried out in an experimental area of Agrometeorology used a randomized outline with five repetition and four treatments: varieties RB92579, RB931530, SP79-1011 e RB93509, in the Agrarian Center of University Federal of Alagoas in Northeast of Brazil, Rio Largo AL, in a United Argissolico Yellow Latossolo soil. The plant parameter utilized to measure the growth were: tillering, plant height, leaf area index (LAI), dry mater accumulation in stalk and yield sugarcane. No differences were observed among tillering media from varieties in all samplings, and in general, the variety RB92579 obtained the biggest tillering. The sugarcane growth showed sigmoidal shape curve, with three different phases. In the crop initial phase, although it occurred great water conditions the sugarcane growth was slow. In the elongation phase the sugarcane didn't grow in potential, due the occurred water deficit in this phase. The last phase occurred between 1500 e 2015 GD in plant cane and 950 e 1800 GD in ratoon crop. The variety RB92579 obtained LAI values of 3 very early (in 600 GD), this contributed to improve the water use efficient and to accumulate more dry matter. The variety RB92579 obtained the biggest tillering ant height of stalk, a result of that, it obtained the biggest yield sugarcane.
