ABSTRACT

Abstract This work seeks proposes a group of indicators that can be used to understand the visibility of social science journals in a more comprehensive way. To this end, the use of various sources of data pertaining to citation, accessibility, and reach are considered. A sample of 11 social science journals published in Argentina and indexed in Scimago Journal & Country Rank is used. The ranking and number of citations found in Scopus are analyzed and compared against data obtained from Google Scholar using the Publish or Perish tool. In addition, data regarding the accessibility and use, as well as alternative metrics, are collected from SciELO, Redalyc, and Dimensions and systematized. The analysis highlights the limited ways in which impact is measured using Scopus data and shows that, by combining data from additional sources, new dimensions of visibility are made apparent. The article concludes with a proposal for a new set of comprehensive visibility indicators that rely on freely available data and allow journal managers and editors to offer a more complete picture of the citational impact and use of their journals and articles.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Social networks are the best exponent of the so-called Web 2.0, where people or entities related through platforms can communicate quickly and simultaneously, to share information and documentation resources of any kind. Currently researchers and institutions use networks to establish links. Objective: Characterize the objectives and elements of academic networks, the advantages and disadvantage they present and the way of use, among other aspects. Method: We made an extensive literature search on this subject that included Web sites, books and magazines during the past five years. The documents obtained were classified and evaluated according to their relevance and quality. Development: The objectives and particularities of Web 2.0 are stated, as well as some ways of obtaining scientific and technical information to later introduce the peculiarities of Social Networks and Academic Social Networks, making a particular distinction with the Academic Research Networks that exist in our area. Techniques currently used to assess the quality of the scientific output of researchers are presented and discussed. Conclusions: Considering the novelty and usefulness of these tools, it is considered that this report may be of interest to researchers and the general public due to the affordable language with which it has been written(AU)

ABSTRACT

Several genome sequencing programs were launched in Brazil by the end of the nineties and the early 2000s.The most important initiatives were supported by the ONSA program (http://watson.fapesp.br/onsa/Genoma3.htm) and aimed at gaining domain in genomic technology and bringing molecular biology to the state of art. Two mainsets of data were collected in the 1996-2007 period to evaluate the results of these genome programs: the scientific production (Scopus and Web of Science databases) and the register of patents (US Patent and Trademark Office), both related to the progress of molecular biology along this period. In regard to the former, Brazil took a great leap in comparison to 17 other developed and developing countries, being only surpassed by China. As to the register of patents in the area of molecular biology, Brazil's performance lags far behind most of the countries focused in the presentstudy, confirming the Brazilian long-standing tendency of poor achievements in technological innovations when compared with scientific production. Possible solutions to surpass this inequality are discussed.
