A questionnaire survey on CMA-L'OREAL China skin/hair grant / 中华医学科研管理杂志

By using questionnaire method,We sent the questionnaires to 74 winners and 15 jury members of CMA-L'OREAL China skin/hair grant and analyzed the questionnaires that had been filled out by them.We got a better understanding on the issue of paper publications of the funded projects,and the judges,advices and overall feelings of winners and jury members on the grant.We analyzed why the grant has been highly appraised by the dermatologists,how the grant has promoted the research activities in the specific area,and what we should do to improve the grant management in the future.

O tamanduá olímpico a caminho da obesidade científica / The Olympic anteater on his way to scientific obesity

Um artigo anterior mostrou que os critérios utilizados pelos órgãos financiadores da pesquisa para escolher os projetos a serem contemplados com bolsas e recursos constituem uma pressão institucional pela publicação mais em quantidade do que em qualidade, o que pode induzir a distorções do fazer científico. Foi usada uma metáfora: o tamanduá tentando participar dos Jogos Olímpicos, para ilustrar a situação dos cientistas de outros países que não têm o inglês como sua língua nativa, os quais têm que participar de dura competição para publicar suas pesquisas em inglês. O presente texto discute as repercussões do artigo anterior e o que aconteceu com os exemplos de pesquisadores que publicam excessivamente, citados anteriormente. Novos dados apresentados sugerem o aumento da publicação brasileira de baixo impacto, uma espécie de obesidade científica. Sugestões são apresentadas para o estímulo à produção de melhor qualidade em vez de quantidade, entre elas que seja considerada na analise dos currículos apenas a qualidade das cinco publicações mais relevantes indicadas pelo próprio cientista que as produziu.

A previous report showed that the criteria used by funding bodies of research to choose the projects to be awarded scholarships and resources constitute an institutional pressure by publishing more in quantity than in quality, which can lead to distortions of the scientific work. A metaphor was used: the anteater trying to participating in the Olympic Games, to illustrate the situation of scientists from other no native English speaker countries, who must participate in the hard competition to publish their researches in English. This paper discusses the implications of the previous article and what happened to the examples of researchers who publish too much, previously mentioned. New data suggest the increase of Brazilian. New data suggest the increase in Brazil's low-impact publication, a sort of scientific obesity. Suggestions are offered to stimulate the production of higher quality instead of quantity, among them that it is considered in the analysis only the quality of the curricula of the five most relevant publications listed by the scientists who produced them.
