ABSTRACT

Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, widely distributed in northwest districts of China, is rich in resources, and is a kind of medicinal plants with great utilization value. From the phytochemical view, the second metabolites such as secoiridoids, iridoids, lignans, flavonoids, and triterpenoids had been reported from this species. Its pharmacological research mainly focused on the anti- inflammatory and analgesic, hepatoprotective, hypotensive, antiviral, and antineoplastic activities. The present paper reviews the phytochemistry and biological activities of Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix through accessing Web of Science and multiple databases for biomedical sciences.

ABSTRACT

Gentiana L. is the largest genera in Gentianaceae. Plants in Gentiana L. contain a lot of chemical constituents with pharmacological activities, especially iridoids. Iridoids has good hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antiviral, and other pharmacological effects. This article summarizes the research progress of iridoids in plants from Gentiana L., which provide references for the studies of chemical constituents in Gentiana L. and the exploitation of medicinal resources.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the chemical constituents of Swertia chirayita. Methods: Column chromatography, such as silica gel, MCI, Sephadex LH-20 were used to isolate and purify the compounds. Physicochemical properties and spectroscopic methods were used to elucidate their structures. Results: Twelve compounds, including 2 xanthones, 4 triterpenoids, 3 secoiridoids, and 3 other compounds, the chemical constituents were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction from 85% ethanol extract of S. chirayita, and identified as bellidifolin (1), norbellidifolin (2), oleanolic acid (3), 4-epi-hederagenin (4), 2-epi-corosolic acid (5), ursolic acid (6), amarogentin (7), swerimilegenin I (8), erythrocentaurin (9), pyrocatechol (10), syringic acid (11), and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid (12). Conclusion: Compounds 4, 5, and 11 are isolated from genus Swertia for the first time, compounds 8 and 9 are found from S. chirayita for the first time.

ABSTRACT

Fraxini Cortex is widely distributed in China and rich in resources, and is a kind of medicinal plants with great utilization value. From the phytochemical view, the secondary metabolites such as coumarins, lignans, secoiridoids, phenylethanoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and triterpenoids had been reported from this species. Its pharmacological research mainly focused on the antibacterial, antiphlogistic, anti-oxidative, lowing-uric acid, diuretic, and antineoplastic activities. The present paper reviews the phytochemistry and biological activities of Fraxini Cortex through accessing Web of Science and multiple databases for biomedicinal sciences.

ABSTRACT

The species Chelananthus alatus is an herbaceous plant with known ethno botanical and medicinal properties used in control of fever, especially those produced by malaria. From dried leaves (1.11 Kg), the crude alcoholic extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid partition with different polarity solvents. From the sec-butyl alcohol soluble fraction, by successive application of chromatographic methods, four compounds type iridoid were isolated and identified by spectroscopic techniques. Compound 1 is a new secoiridoid which was identified as sweroside 7-isobutyryloxy, and it is reported here for the first time in the Gentianaceae family; the other secoiridoids which were isolated are known as vogeloside (2), dihydro-chelonanthoside (3) and sweroside (4); vogeloside was identified for the first time in this plant (C. alatus). From the isopropyl acetate extract, in conjunction with the sweroside 7- isobutyryloxy (1), chelonanthoside (5) and sweroside (4), were identified, along with the sweroside 7-isovaleryloxy-(6) as a new side chain isomeric ester of dihydrochelonanthoside (3) . This work presents the spectroscopic analysis of the new structures and some bioactivity data.

ABSTRACT

Methanolic extract of Jasminum mesnyi Hance leaves having antidiabetic activity was subjected to fractionation to obtain antioxidant and antihyperglycemic rich fraction. Different concentrations of ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions were subjected to antioxidant assay by DPPH method, nitric oxide scavenging activity and reducing power assay. The fractions showed dose dependent free radical scavenging property in all the models. IC50 values for ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions were 153.45±6.65 and 6.22±0.25 g/ml, respectively, as compared to L-ascorbic acid and rutin (as standards; IC50 values 6.54±0.24 and 5.43±0.21 g/ml, respectively) in DPPH model. In nitric oxide scavenging activity, IC50 values were 141.54±9.95 g/ml, 35.12±1.58 g/ml, 21.06±0.95 g/ml and 29.93±0.32 g/ml for ethyl acetate, n-butanol fractions, L-ascorbic acid and rutin, respectively. n-Butanol fraction showed a good reducing potential and better free radical scavenging activity as compared to ethyl acetate fraction. Potent antioxidant n-butanol fraction showed better oral glucose tolerance test (antihyperglycemic) at par with metformin (standard drug). n-Butanol fraction contained secoiridoid glycosides which might be responsible for both antioxidant and antihyperglycemic activity.
