ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to identify the effects of the self efficacy promoting program on self efficacy and performance of preventive health behavior of uterine cervical cancer for community nurses. METHOD: A one group quasi-experimental research with pre and post test design was used. The subjects of the study were consisted of twenty two community nurses in a city in Korea. The whole program was carried out from July to September, 2003. The effect of the program was analyzed at the first week, the fifth week, and the ninth week since the experiment input began. Data were analyzed with repeated ANOVA to determine the effects of program. RESULTS: 1) After the self efficacy promoting program, self efficacy scores were significantly increased compared to those before the program(F=12.029. p=0.005). 2) After the self efficacy promoting program, preventive health behavior scores were significantly increased than those before the program(F=10.431. p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS: This 9-week program showed much affirmative effect on the prevention of uterine cervical cancer for community nurses. Thus this program can be recommended to the management of the prevention and early detection of uterine cancer.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Self-Efficacy Promoting Program on Self-Efficacy, Metabolic Control and Self-Care Behaviors in Patients with NIDDM. METHOD: Data was collected from March 15th to July 15th, 2001. The subjects of the study consisted of 23 NIDDM patients who had visited regularly the endocrinology out-patient department of Gwangju Christian Hospital. The instrument used in the study Paek's self-efficacy measurement scale, was modified by the researcher, self-care behaviors were created by health care teams, and HbA1c for the sugar metabolic control were measured from the patients blood. The Interventions of the self efficacy promoting program were applied 4 hours a week for 6weeks. Data were analyzed with SPSS/PC+, using T-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test. RESULT: The mean score for self-efficacy was 70.61+/-15.48 of a 140 point scale, the mean score for HbA1c level was 8.07+/-1.86%. The self efficacy promoting program significantly increased the score of self efficacy (Z=-4.198, P=.000). And the self efficacy promoting program was significantly decreased in metabolic control (Z=-2.585, p=.010). Taking medicine and controlling alcohol were the best self care behaviors of this program. CONCLUSION: It was established that the self efficacy promoting program was effective for improving self efficacy, metabolic level and self care behaviors in patients with NIDDM.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of a self-efficacy promoting program and analyze its components. METHOD: The material used for this study were 18 self-efficacy promoting program studies carried out from Jan. 1980 to Oct. 2003. The studies were analyzed in different categories: 1) types of dependent variables 2) sample characteristics 3) types of experimental treatment conditions 4) types of self-efficacy source and 5) total amount of time RESULT: 1) The weighted mean of a self-efficacy promoting program ranged from 1.383 to 0.015 2) for the experimental treatment condition, exercise had a much larger effect in increasing general self-efficacy and self-care than education 3) the studies using 3 sources had a much larger effect in increasing self-care than the studies using 4 sources 4) a time period longer than 900 minutes had a much larger effect in increasing specific self-efficacy, general self-efficacy and self-care than in a time period shorter than 900 minutes. 5) effect size of specific self-efficacy was significantly higher than general self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: These results can be used to guide the development of a self-efficacy promoting program for nursing practice.
