ABSTRACT

Patients with chronic heart failure suffer from undesirable effects in their daily activities. Effective self-care management in conjunction with social support gives improved the wellbeing of patients with chronic heart failure. This study determines social support and self-care management among patients with chronic heart failure. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Cardiology Clinic in Hospital Serdang, Selangor from April 2014 to June 2014. A questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, MOS Social Survey and Self-Care Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) was distributed to a total of 113 respondents. The results show moderately high level of social support (3.51±0.89) and level of self-care management (160.49±44.39). For instance, social support and self-care management were not statistically significant with the demographic characteristics (p>0.05). There was a positive correlation between social support and self-care management (r=0.263, p<0.05) and the findings suggest that social support should be considered a predictor in self-care management of patients with chronic heart failure.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the method of self-care management education for patients who have received the eyelid reconstruction surgery by transplanting with free flap-skin. Methods There were 11 cases (15 eyes) who achieved self-care management and continued nursing, including the preoperative, postoperative nursing care of the donor-skin area, eye nursing, diet guidance, medication guidance, safety protection and its like. Results None of the cases revealed infection and all the grafts showed good biological activity among the 11 cases (15 eyes). Conclusions After self-care management education and continued nursing, the averaged hospitalization days of the patients are shortened; the cost is reduced, and the successful rate of the eyelid′s construction by free skin-flap transplantation is enhanced. Self-care management education and continued nursing care played an important role in promoting the healing and improving the successful rate of eyelid′s skin-flap transplantation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the level of depression and self management behavior in patients with diabetes. METHOD: From May to August 2004, 124 diabetic patients 18 years or older were surveyed using the Korean version of the BDI, the self-management scale by Toobert(2000) and hospital lab data for HbAl, FBS and Blood Sugar-2hr. RESULTS: 1. Mean score on the BDI for the patients was 10.85 points. The score on the BDI was significantly higher in hyperglycemic patients than in normoglycemic patients. 2. The level of self management for the past week showed care on an average of 4.2 days. According to level of depression, patients in the normal group and patients in the mild group had significantly higher levels of self management than those in the moderate group. 3. According to level of depression, patients in the normal group had significantly lower levels of blood glucose than those in the moderate group, and for HbAlc and FBS those in the mild group had lower levels compared to those in the moderate group. 4. The factors significantly associated with level of self management were depression (25.66%) and duration of illness. CONCLUSION: Programs should be developed to combat depression in patients with diabetes in order to increase compliance through self care management and thus increase of blood glucose levels.
