ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The balance between self- and social identity on job value of Korean dance artists, considered as performing artists, was measured to investigate the relationship between balance and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Data of 139 dance artists were analyzed for depressive symptoms assessed by their responses to questionnaires from the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD) translated into Korean. The balance score of each aspect of social identity compared to that of self-identity on job value was measured and classified as lower, equal, or higher. Following a graphical approach, we performed locally weighted scatterplot smoothing algorithm, simple linear regression, and quadric equation regression. RESULTS: The mean of CESD was highest in the higher balance group and lowest in the lower balance group. There was a linear relationship between balance score and CESD regarding specific audience, unspecified audience, and unspecified public. Balance score showed no association with other aspects of social identity. In the balance score range of 1 or higher, it was associated with CESD with respect to artist colleague, unspecified audience, and unspecified public. CONCLUSIONS: Dance artists should maintain a balance between self- and social identity in job value to prevent depressive symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the mediating effect of self-identity on the relationship between interpersonal adaptation and the tendency of mobile phone addiction in college students. Methods:Totally 498 college students (217 males and 281 females) were selected and assessed with the College Student Interpersonal Adaptability Inventory (CSIAI),Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale (MPATS) and Personal Identity Scale(PIS).The bias-corrected percentile bootstrap method was used to analyze the mediating effect of self-identity between interpersonal adaptation and mobile phone addiction tendency in college students. Results:The MPATS scores of male students were significantly lower than female students [(2.6 ± 0.7) vs.(2.7 ± 0.6),P < 0.05].The MPATS scores were negatively correlated with the scores of CSIAI and PIS (r =-0.31,-0.36,Ps < 0.01),the CSIAI scores were positively correlated with the PIS scores (r =0.50,P <0.01).Self-identity played a partly mediating role between interpersonal adaptation and mobile phone addiction tendency, which accounted for 43.6% of the total effect. Conclusion:It shows that the mobile phone addiction tendency may be related to interpersonal adaptation and self-identity,interpersonal adaptation could affect the mobile phone addiction tendency through the self-identity.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate differences in self-identity in patients diagnosed with strabismus, patients who underwent strabismus surgery, and healthy control individuals. METHODS: Self-identity testing was done during a military service physical examination. There were three subject groups: subjects with strabismus (group 1), subjects who had undergone corrective strabismus surgery (group 2), and subjects free of strabismus (group 3). The self-identity test was comprised of six sub-sections (subjectivity, self-acceptance, future confidence, goal orientation, initiative, and familiarity). Statistical significance of the sub-sections was compared across the three groups. Correlations in age at the time of surgery and across the six sub-sections were investigated in group 2. RESULTS: A total of 351 subjects were enrolled in the study; 96 subjects were in group 1, 108 subjects were in group 2, and 147 subjects were in group 3. Significant differences were evident in subjectivity, self-acceptance, initiative and familiarity between groups 1 and 3. No significant differences were found between groups 2 and 3. In group 2, statistical significance was evident between age at surgery and initiative and familiarity (r = −0.333, p < 0.001; r = −0.433, p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Self-identity is greater in non-strabismus subjects than strabismus subjects. Correction of strabismus may increase self-identity levels.

ABSTRACT

In studying the identity of individuals of “mixed” national origins, the research investigates the impact of potential tensions these individuals could experience in belonging to two national groups. The purpose of this article is to see if such tensions exist, and if so, how “nationally mixed people,” that is people having parents born in two different countries, respond to them. The analysis of about a hundred interviews conducted in France, the UK and Germany highlights different situations where they experience an identity crisis: in the case of competition between lineage, or a mismatch between self-identity and identity for others. When they were not in the middle of intergroup tensions, nationally mixed people did not experience identity tension. In other cases, they developed strategies in order to build a coherent and positive identity, thus, showing that having a conflicting identity was a situation the individual was strongly fighting to leave.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of enneagram group counseling program on self-identification and depression in nursing college students. Three groups, categorized by how the students solve their conflicts, were selected to identify changes from the program. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group and pre posttest design was used. Participants were assigned to the experimental group (n=30) or control group (n=33). The experimental group participated in enneagram group counseling program for 38 hours through eight sessions covering four different topics. Collected data were analyzed using Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and Wilcoxon signed rank test. RESULTS: Total self-identity score for the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups for depression scores. The Assertive and Compliant groups demonstrated significant change in self-identification while the Withdrawn groups did not reveal any change. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that the enneagram group counseling program is very effective in establishing positive self-identification for nursing college students who face developmental crisis and stressful situations. It is also expected that this program would be useful to enhance the students' confidence through a deeper understanding and acceptance of themselves.
