ABSTRACT

Self-abnormality in patients with depression has been confirmed in a lot of research results.Negative self-referential processing of depression is associated with higher follow-up depressive symptoms and predicts the recurrence of major depressive episodes. Both self-processing and self-recognition are impaired in depression. The overgeneral autobiographical memory is also a risk factor for onset and maintenance of depression. This review examined self-abnormalities of depression from self-face recognition,self-referential processing and autobiographical memory and summarized the problems of current researches and the future research trends, and may provide insight to explore the self-abnormalities of depression patients comprehensively.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The close relationship between impaired self-referential processing and intrinsic motivation in schizophrenia has been suggested, but is not investigated yet. The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of self-referential processing and its relationship with intrinsic motivation in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Nineteen patients with schizophrenia and 24 healthy controls performed a self-referential processing task, in which a face (self, familiar other, or unfamiliar other) and three words (positive, neutral, and negative nouns) were presented. Participants were asked to indicate which word is relevant to the face. Intrinsic motivation and basic psychological needs affecting intrinsic motivation were assessed using self-reports. RESULTS: Compared to healthy controls, the relevance rating between self-face and neutral word was significantly lower in patients with schizophrenia (p=0.02). In patients with schizophrenia, it was negatively correlated with intrinsic motivation (r=-0.47, p=0.04) and competence (r=-0.47, p=0.05) which is known to influence intrinsic motivation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that there is an impairment in self-referential processing in schizophrenia and it is associated with an impairment in intrinsic motivation. In particular, amotivation in patients with schizophrenia may represent a facet of selfdisorder.

ABSTRACT

Objective To review the research progress of functional magnetic resonance imaging in Self -referential Processing (SRP) of patients with Depression based on the papers published from 2004 to 2014 at abroad and domestic, with an attempted to explore the neuromechanism of depression and to provide reference for treatment of depression. Methods Major online database including PubMed,EBSCO,Ovid,Medline,Clinicalkey,Wan Fang,CNKI,Cqvip, and CBM date bases were searched in Octobor 2014.The key words we used are depressionor depressive disorder,Self-referential Processing or rumination orautobiographical memory or Self-face recognition, Functional Magnetic Resonance Inaging(tMRI)and so on.Results 28 studies were adopted in this study, findings from the study showed:①rumination,autobiographical memory (AM) retrieval, and self-face recognition(SFR) are SRP paradigms, the cortical midline structures (CMS)and default mode network (DMN) were involved in the SRP of depression.②Both medication and cognitive behavioral therapy could reduce the abnormal activation of CMS and DMN in patients with depression.Conclusioins ①Both CMS and DMN may be the neuromechanism of SRP of depression.②Both CMS and DMN may be used as objective indicators to evaluate the treatment response in patients with depression.
