ABSTRACT

SUMMARY INTRODUCTION: In addition to reproductive purposes, human sexuality and sexual health are matters of great importance in the medical office. Despite this, there is still a deficiency in the training of Brazilian medical students regarding sexual medicine and gender issues. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze the perception of fifth- and sixth-year students in relation to the teaching of sexual medicine and gender issues in medical courses. METHODS: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study with students from the last 2 years of medical schools in the State of Santa Catarina (internship classes), through the application of a self-administered, semi-structured online questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 164 students answered the questionnaire, with 83.5% (137/164) saying they had taken classes on sexual medicine and 47% (77/164) saying they had taken classes on gender issues. The participants judged the teaching inadequate in most of the topics addressed, and there was no significant difference between students from public and private schools. Notably, 79.9% (131/164) of the students considered the teaching of sexual medicine insufficient or inadequate, while 87.8% (144/164) considered the teaching of gender issues insufficient or inadequate. CONCLUSION: The vast majority of students consider the teaching of sexual medicine and gender issues insufficient and inadequate.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Youth represents a period of vulnerability accompanied by physical and psychological changes that predispose individuals to risky sexual behaviors, from a context in which the quality of education in sexual and reproductive health does not meet the needs of the population. Objective: To identify the association between risky sexual behaviors in university women and their satisfaction with the information they have received on sexual and reproductive health throughout their lives. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study applied to a convenience sample of 182 university students. Variables related to sociodemographic characteristics, risky sexual behaviors, sources of information and satisfaction with the information received on sexual and reproductive health were analyzed. The association between the variables was determined by applying the chi2 test (p<0.05) and the OR statistical measure. Results: Sexually active women predominated (70.3%) and women who did not want to get pregnant at the time of being surveyed (98.9%);. 10.9% of the women surveyed, are sexually active, do not plan and do not want to get pregnant, the source of education that prevailed were the professionals of health (75.3%). There was no significant discrepancy between the percentage of women satisfied with the information they received (51%) and those who were not satisfied (49%). No association was found between risky sexual behaviors and satisfaction with the information on sexual and reproductive health received throughout their lives, considering that this does not fully represent quality education. Conclusión: The students enrolled in universities located in the city of Medellín show risky sexual behaviors that are not associated with the satisfaction they have with the information on sexual and reproductive health that they have obtained throughout their lives.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although worldwide has been demonstrated that the older adult population maintains an active sexual life, this is limited by stereotypes, physiological changes resulting from the aging process and the absence of comprehensive health strategies for sexuality. Objective: To document the sexual experience of older adults in the country and to understand the reasons that promote or limit the search for sexual healthcare. Methodology: Qualitative study. Thirty-nine interviews and four virtual workshops were conducted with men and women 50 years of age and older in Barranquilla, Bogotá, Cali, and Medellín, although people from other cities were not excluded. Results: Among the main findings, it is evident that this population has positive evaluations of sexuality and sex, but its development is limited, especially for women, by gender roles. Sexuality in the elderly is formed by their initial education, the transformation of ideas about sexuality throughout their life trajectories, the transformations of their bodies, their state of health, recent sexual practices and experiences, and the way in which they approach this topic with health professionals. Conclusions: The heterogeneity of experiences, practices and values given to sexuality and sex in old age require policies and programs based on empirical research that overcome the ageist conception of sexuality. This study is a contribution to the national literature on sexuality and aging, and to the design of health care and well-being services according to the specific needs, identities and circumstances of the older adult population in terms of sexuality.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The female sex has been systematically identified as one of the predictors of poor quality of life in patients with cirrhosis. However, the relationship between quality of life and sexual function in women with cirrhosis has not been widely studied. Aim: To determine the relationship between quality of life and sexual function in women with cirrhosis. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional observational study. Female patients aged 18 to 69 years were included. The SF-36-V2 survey assessed health-related quality of life, and the IFSF-6 evaluated sexual function. Univariate and multivariate linear regression was used to identify the relationship between quality of life and sexual function. Statistical significance was set at a p-value < 0.05. Results: 36 patients were available for analysis. The average age was 61 years. In the SF36-V2 survey, the physical component summary mean was 58, and the mental component summary mean was 56. The IFSF-6 had an average of 10. Sexual dysfunction occurred in 80% of patients. The IFSF-6 score was positively related to health-related quality of life. Factors associated with the deterioration of sexual function were age and menopause. The Child-Pugh score and body mass index were the main determinants of health-related quality of life. Conclusions: Sexual function could be a determinant of quality of life in women with cirrhosis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Abstract The scope of this article is to investigate the prevalence of the experience of forced sexual intercourse on life and its possible consequences on mental and sexual health among undergraduate students at a public university in Brazil. It is a quantitative cross-sectional study with 996 undergraduate students. Sampling was carried out systematically by single-stage clusters. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Poisson Regression model, and the etiological fractions of the consequences of forced sexual intercourse were calculated. The lifetime prevalence of forced sexual intercourse was 12.1%. Female sex, non-heterosexual sexual orientation, first sexual intercourse before the age of 14, child food insecurity and domestic violence were associated with a higher prevalence of the outcome. Individuals who experienced forced sexual intercourse were more likely to be diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections and to represent a potential suicide risk. The study revealed the problems of sexual violence in the university context.

ABSTRACT

Abstract BACKGROUND Stigmatization, which emerges depending on the sexual behavior of young individuals, leads to negative health and social outcomes, such as shame, social marginalization, violence, and mental health morbidity. Objective: This study aimed to examine the correlation between the level of sexual and reproductive health stigma and gender perception in female university students. DESIGN AND SETTING: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences of a university in Turkey. METHODS: The data of this study were collected from digital media between July and October 2020 from a study population of 385 students. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, including the socio-demographic characteristics of students, the Sexual and Reproductive Health Stigmatization Scale in Young Women and the Perception of Gender Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson's correlation test were used to assess the data. RESULTS: It was determined that there was a negative correlation between the Sexual and Reproductive Health Stigmatization Scale in Young Women and the Perception of Gender Scale (r = -0.173, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: It was determined that as the gender perception in the young women who participated in the study increased, the sexual and reproductive health stigmatization level decreased. The sexual and reproductive health stigmatization levels of the participants were at an above average level, and gender perception was at a medium level.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify the impact of hysterectomy for benign pathologies on female sexuality. Methods: Literature review with search on PubMed platform, being selected 23 articles in Portuguese and English published between 2016 and 2021. Results: Improvement in sexual function after hysterectomy was mostly described, being similar in total or supracervical approaches and independent of the surgical access route, although it had slightly lower impact when laparoscopic. In the laparoscopic approach, there was better sexual outcome in the vaginal dome closure when compared to vaginal closure. In addition, concomitant oophorectomy showed conflicting and inconclusive results. Conclusion: Hysterectomy positively affects female sexual health and technical aspects may interfere with sexual function, but data are limited. Due to the importance of the theme, more studies with standardized methodologies are needed to enable more detailed analyses.

Introduction: Sexuality is a human dimension that needs to be taken care of due to its impact on the comprehensive health of people. Objective: To describe the communicative process involved in the care of patients' sexuality within professional practice environments through the insights of the constructivist grounded theory. Materials and method: Study based on the constructivist grounded theory, conducted with twelve nursing professionals in Medellin (Colombia) who participated in an intensive interview between June 2020 and September 2020. The analysis began with audio pre-coding. After the transcriptions, were selected incidents, to which an action code was assigned. The codes obtained were grouped according to meaning, thus forming categories and subcategories. Theoretical, analytical, and descriptive memos were cross-sectional within the analysis. Results: Taboo and shyness surrounding sexuality, especially when focusing on genitality, negatively affect communication and hence the caring process of patients. Therefore, professionals must listen attentively, be impartial, use a type of language that is legitimized by the patients, and demonstrate empathy in order to foster trust, bonding and connection, which allows identifying needs and acting according to the subject and the specific context of care. Conclusion: The care for sexuality is a communicative act where nonverbal communication prevails. This must be interpreted by health professionals to be able to respond correctly to needs and the limits established by the patients, in therapeutic communication. This is the reason why "the patient shapes us."

ABSTRACT

Objective: To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with condom use in a riverside population. Materials and method: Cross-sectional and analytical study with 209 riverside inhabitants in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, from June to October 2019. Data were collected through individual and private interviews using a structured questionnaire with sociodemographic and sexual behavior-related variables. Analysis was conducted using Poisson regression. Prevalence ratios were estimated. Bivariate and multiple analyzes were used to identify the association between sociodemographic and behavioral variables with condom use. Results: The estimated prevalence of condom use was 18.2% (95% CI: 13.0-23.4). Riverside people over 40 years were less likely to use condoms (PR = 0.53; 95% ci: 0.34-0.83). On the other hand, individuals with more than 8 years of schooling were more likely to use condoms (PR = 3.94; 95% CI: 2.65-5.88). Conclusions: The prevalence of condom use among participants was low. However, individuals with higher education attainment were more likely to use it. Combined prevention is an alternative to control communicable infections, with condoms being the main prevention measure. Consequently, understanding the singularities of similar populations and the risk factors for good adherence to condom use is essential.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 may have potential effects on the male reproductive system. Evidence has shown that SARS-CoV-2 is not likely to transmit through sexual intercouse. However, male infected with SARS-CoV-2 may experience sexual dysfunction, semen quality decline, testicular damage and abnormal sex hormones. The extent and duration of these damages are still unclear, and further multidimensional research is necessary.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze puerperal women's experiences of sexual health after childbirth from the perspective of symbolic interactionism. Method: Descriptive, qualitative study. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted by videoconference with women in the remote puerperium, captured by snowball technique and searched for "seeds" on Instagram®. Bardin's content analysis and Symbolic Interactionism were used as references. Results: The puerperal women signify sexual health from a perspective of comprehensive healthcare. However, due to the duality between "being a woman" and "being a mother", they recognize fear, bodily transformations and changes in focus from the love relationship to caring for the baby as factors that interfere with sexual health. And they choose to put themselves aside, prioritizing caring for others. They re-signify sexual health by recognizing the importance of taking care of themselves in biopsychosocial aspects and try to recover self-care for a healthy sexual experience. Conclusion: Despite the meanings attributed, women's social interactions with the puerperium interfere negatively with sexual health. Professionals should be sensitized to the inclusion of actions that promote changes in the social action of these women towards self-care.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective To review the current state of knowledge on the impact of the surgical treatment on the sexual function and dyspareunia of deep endometriosis patients. Data Source A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines. We conducted systematic searches in the PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, and Web of Science databases from inception until December 2022. The eligibility criteria were studies including: preoperative and postoperative comparative analyses; patients with a diagnosis of deep endometriosis; and questionnaires to measure sexual quality of life. Study Selection Two reviewers screened and reviewed 1,100 full-text articles to analyze sexual function after the surgical treatment for deep endometriosis. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for observational studies and the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for randomized controlled trials. The present study was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; registration CRD42021289742). Data Collection General variables about the studies, the surgical technique, complementary treatments, and questionnaires were inserted in an Microsoft Excel 2010 (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, United States) spreadsheet. Synthesis of Data We included 20 studies in which the videolaparoscopy technique was used for the excision of deep infiltrating endometriosis. A meta-analysis could not be performed due to the substantial heterogeneity among the studies. Classes III and IV of the revised American Fertility Society classification were predominant and multiple surgical techniques for the treatment of endometriosis were performed. Standardized and validated questionnaires were applied to evaluate sexual function. Conclusion Laparoscopic surgery is a complex procedure that involves multiple organs, and it has been proved to be effective in improving sexual function and dyspareunia in women with deep infiltrating endometriosis.
