ABSTRACT

According to Freud, Psychoanalysis may claim a higher place among those sciences that make an effort to reconstruct the earliest and most obscure stages of mankind. The reason is that neuroses and psychoses, objects of the psychoanalytic study, have kept soul antiques. Dispositions to neuroses permitted Freud to conceive the genealogy of sexual instinct: its removal from the biological sexual function (anxiety hysteria), its satisfaction ability in fantasy (conversion hysteria) and its satisfaction ability in increasing power, self-assertion and dominion over the world and over others (obsessional neurosis). Dispositions to psychoses allowed Freud to conceive the genealogy of guilt and social life: the pleasure in the submission to castration by sexualizing the pain (schizophrenia), the sexual pleasure with the equal one and founded on the hatred towards the different one (paranoia), and the pleasure in the hatred of the self (mania/melancholy). In this paper, the author goes through all the stages of this reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The author has as his objective, in this paper, the rethinking of repetition compulsion. He takes as a starting point the following question: Repetition compulsion: death instinct or attempt at symbolization? In face of this inquiry, he attempts to rectify that which he considers a misconception, in terms of proposing that in the process of repetition "com+pulsion" ("com" meaning "with", in Portuguese), death instinct and sexual pulsion (drive) are implied. The author proposes that what determines the destiny in repetition compulsion is the inefficiency of the sexual instinct in domesticating the death instinct. Following the path proposed by Freud, he understands that repetition compulsion presents a dichotomy, causing the emergence of two groups: a compulsion driven by the pleasure principle and another driven by beyond the pleasure principle. As a result of this process, he comprehends that the death instinct and its clinical manifestations, through repetition compulsion, will be the resultant of being trans-invested or invested with libido

ABSTRACT

Human behaviors are related to either life or death instincts. A sexual instinct or sex drive is an indispensable element to both procreation and recreation. Instead of enjoying sexual expression to the full, people control or suppress the sexual expression only inside their conjugal relations as they were educated or cultivated. However, the suppression of sexual gratification leads to various kinds of substitute gratification. In other words, people want more sexual expression as a reaction against suppression. Due to suppression, the strength of the sexual instinct probably varies in each individual. In the traditional society, the sexual instinct is very powerful in men and comparatively weak in women. Both social constructionism and essentialism are rival approaches to the gender differences, but Baumeister introduced four theories about cultural suppression of female sexuality. According to him, most research findings fit the female conspiracy theory a little better than the other theories. While Baumeister pointed out that a woman's sex drive naturally fluctuates over the years, he proposed that the female drive is more malleable than the male drive in response to socio-cultural and situational factors.
