ABSTRACT

Abstract

HIV/syphilis co-infection is common because both conditions affect similar risk groups. HIV interferes with the natural history of syphilis, which often has atypical clinical features and nervous system involvement in the early stage of disease. We report the case of an HIV-positive patient with secondary syphilis, scaling palmoplantar keratoderma, scrotal eczema, balanitis and urethritis mimicking Reiter’s syndrome. Immunohistochemistry using polyclonal antibodies against Treponema pallidum revealed the presence of spirochetes, associated with the paretic form of parenchymal neurosyphilis. The patient was given crystalline penicillin, with complete resolution of dermatological and neurological symptoms, and no sequelae.

ABSTRACT

Background: We report a 35-year-old female patient with a one year history of a pustular and painful erythematous dermatitis, located in great folds, pubis and abdomen. She was evaluated in primary health care, receiving antifungal treatment, antimicrobials, topical and systemic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, with no response. A skin biopsy was compatible with subcorneal pustular dermatosis. She was initially treated with prednisone (0.8 mg/kg), observing a partial response. Therefore clotrimoxazole was initiated, obtaining an excellent response after 30 days of treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the characteristics of contact allergens in eczema and dermatitis for further diagnosis and treatment. Methods 340 cases with eczema and dermatitis were tested with a standardized screening antigen kit. Results (80. 88% ) of the 340 patients tested had at least one positive allergen among 18 of 20 standardized screening antigen. The first six allergens were nickel sulfate ( 29. 70% ), potassium dichroroate (27.64% ) ,fragrant mix(22.35% ) ,carba mix(20.29% ) ,thimerosal( 18. 82% ) ,benzocaine( 17.94% ). Conclusion Nickel sulfate, potassium dichromate, fragrance mix and carba mix were the main allergens causing dermatitis and eczema presently. Patch-testing was helpful in identifying the property of contact allergens in para eczema and dermatitis.
