ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Small for gestational age (SGA) infants have been linked to poor growth trends and nutritional status. SGA infants that do not reach their full growth potential must be supervised by a multidisciplinary medical team. Parents devote more time, energy, and money for raising of the SGA infants. The objective of this present study is to explore the perceptions and the experiences of the mother in nurturing the small for gestational age infants in their first year of life. Method: A qualitative exploratory descriptive study via in-depth interview was conducted in the primary health clinics in urban areas in Malaysia to explore the mothers’ perceptions and experiences in SGA infant’s care. 13 SGA infant’s mothers participated in the study after the children achieved the age of one year old. Thematic analysis was conducted using software ATLAS.ti version 8. Results: The average mothers’ age in this study were 33 years old, majority was Malay ethnicity. Only one mother was a housewife and others were working mother. Four out of 13 SGA infants were born prematurely. This study found that homogenous experiences throughout the pregnancy and baby nurturing phase, perceptions on husband involvement and external supports in infant care, infant health status and health services provided, were highlighted as important contributor to infant survival. Conclusion: The importance of monitoring SGA infant growth and nutritional status have been highlighted. Maternal psychological support needs to be enhanced to ease the burden in SGA infant care. Targeted program intervention for family and community social support during postnatal and empowering mothers in nurturing their infants are crucial.

ABSTRACT

With the development of modern perinatal medicine, the incidence rate and survival rate of small for gestational age(SGA)infants significantly increased. But the surviving SGA infants tend to be associated with a lot of health problems and sequelae. SGA infants not only have a risk of perinatal adverse outcome, but also have a high risk of growth retardation, cognitive dysfunction, adult metabolic syndrome and psychosocial dysfunction. Now,the present status and research progress of growth and development of SGA infants are expounded,in order to provide evidence for early identification, diagnosis, effective intervention and follow-up strategy, and further to improve the prognosis of SGA infants and the quality of life, easing the burden of society.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the association between maternal passive smoking during pregnancy and the small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants and to analyze independent factors on duration,in different areas. Methods Totally,8 retrospective studies published in PubMed (no year limited),OVID-MEDLINE (no year limited),CNKI (from 1911 to 2008),VIP (from 1989 to 2008),and CBM (no year limited),on maternal passive smoking during pregnancy and SGA were analyzed synthetically by Meta-analysis.Results The unadjusted pooled OR value on the association between maternal passive smoking during pregnancy and SGA was 1.45 (95%CI: 1.05-2.01).Data showed that the adjusted pooled OR value was 1.76 (95%Ch 1.15-2.69).Maternal passive smoking in early pregnancy was a risk factor for SGA(OR=1.85,95%Ch 1.25-2.72),and so was the exposure in mid or late pregnancy (OR=2.12,95%Ch 1.43-3.13).No statistically significant relationship between SGA and passive smoking at home or at workplace was found. Conclusion Avoiding passive smoking in pregnancy for mothers could reduce the possibility of delivering SGA infants.Other than at home or at workplace, problem of passive smoking in other places should also be brought up.
