ABSTRACT

Present study was conducted using purposive sampling technique to identify prevailing marketing practices and consumer preference for pork in Bareilly city. The study revealed that majority of retailers come under middle age group and belong to lower socio-economic strata. Facilities of chiller, deep freezer, disinfectant and packaging and labeling were not available at any retail shops. Majority of respondent sold 30-35kg pork/day with higher frequency of selling at morning within 4-5 hrs of slaughter. Problems faced by retailers were poor financial conditions and lack of marketing chain. Pork retailers required training and aids related to pork business from government. Majority of consumers at Bareilly city belongs to the lower socio-economic strata. Majority of individuals purchased pork at least 1-2 times per week, most of them purchased at morning time. Most of consumer preferred ham cut, purchased meat from road side stalls immediately after slaughter for preparing dishes from pork and preferred stewing. Finally, it can be concluded that pork was sold through unorganized sector, both consumers and retailers were not aware about quality and safety of pork and meager value chain exist for pork business at Bareilly city

ABSTRACT

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of gastrointestinal tract with unclear aetiology and no reliable biomarkers like other chronic and functional disorders. Majority of the patients of IBS suffer from various forms of psychosomatic disorders as comorbidity that further exaggerate the complexity of diagnosis and management of IBS. The aim of the present study was to find the prevalence of commonly associated psychosomatic symptoms associated with IBS in the patients of lower socioeconomic strata. Methods: This is a prospective observational study carried out over a period of 10years from November-2007 till October-2017, in HAHC hospital attached to Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research. A structured questionnaire comprising of a total of 36 closed ended questions was designed. Eleven questions were about the demographic characteristics and twenty-five were pertaining to IBS symptoms according to Manning and Rome III criteria with some necessary modifications. Various psychosomatic illnesses were recorded separately after ruling out the organic cause with appropriate investigations. Results: In the present study out of 4000 patients with IBS symptoms, 70.8% were having some form of psychosomatic symptoms, Patients with psychosomatic disorders were significantly more often young in age and females (53.28%), showing highest number of patients belonging to the age group 26-35years (51.44%). 34% patient had two or more psychosomatic illnesses. Headache (62.26%) and insomnia (63.03%) were the commonest followed by chest pain (36.54%). Chest pain (77.68%), headache (62.26%) and insomnia (56.07%) was more common in male whereas palpitation (60.58%) and breathlessness (57.68%) was more common in female. Conclusions: There is significantly high prevalence of psychosomatic illness in the patients of IBS in the low socio-economic strata. The young patients (productive age group) are more affected which may be responsible for further deteriorating their social and economic condition.

ABSTRACT

Background: As students spend a third of their time in classrooms interacting with teachers, thisqualitative study sought to understand the role of teacher-student relationship in the students’ subjectiveconstruction of academic resilience. Methods: Individual interviews were conducted with seven at-risk students preparing for the IIT (IndianInstitute of Technology) examination through the “Super30” coaching programme, which resembles thetraditional “Gurukula” system of learning in that the student (or “Shishya”) stays with the teacher duringthe preparatory period. Results: Findings showed that Turnaround Teachers engaged in democratic, identity-affirming and virtueprioritizing messages to promote academic excellence in at-risk students. It also brought to light the bidirectional, deeply caring relationships that were at the centre of these interactions. High expectations ofteachers as well as appropriate limit setting interventions played a significant role in strengthening sociallyoriented achievement motivation in students coming from collectivistic cultures. Conclusion:Findings emphasize the urgent need to strengthen these accessible protective forces by offeringnecessary educational interventions so that academic success becomes a reality for every child, regardlessof external resources.

ABSTRACT

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are important for growth and function of several organs and biochemical systems in the child. Objective: Document the level of fatty acids (FA) in Venezuela preschool children to obtain data on their average, standard deviation and its relationship with socioeconomic status and geographic location. Methodology: A cross-sectional study included 191 preschool children from Miranda, Nueva Esparta, Bolívar States and Orinoquia coming from different socioeconomic strata according to the Graffar-Méndez-Castellano classification system. The FA content of glycerophospholipids fraction in oral mucosal cells was analyzed by the method of Klinger and colleagues with minor modification. Data analysis was performed using the statistical package StatCrunch. Results: The Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has a bimodal distribution pattern whilst the Arachidonic acid is Gaussian. DHA is higher in the better-off socioeconomic groups (Strata I-III) than in the worst-off groups (Strata V-V) in Caracas, whose values are lower than 0.2%. This situation is reversed (Strata V-V) > Strata (I-III)) in Margarita. The indigenous population from Orinoquia has high levels of DHA, similar to those reported in affluent countries. The Trans fatty acid isomer content of the majority of children was low (<0.5%). Conclusions: There are differences in the FA content of Venezuelan pre-school children with respect to their socioeconomic and geographical regions. Low levels of DHA found in some urban groups of pre-school children require future intervention studies with FA fortified food.
