ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: The main objective of this study was to compare stress and anxiety levels in children undergoing surgical procedures with or without parental presence at induction of anesthesia by measuring salivary cortisol levels and applying the mYPAS. Method: Quasi-randomized trial with children aged 5-12 year, with ASA physical status I, II, or III, undergoing elective surgery. According to parents' willingness, the pair were defined as accompanied or unaccompanied group. Chi-square, Fisher's exact tests, Student's t test, Mann-Whitney, Hodges-Lehman and Spearman's tests were used for statistical analyzes. Results: We included 46 children; 63% were preschool children mostly accompanied by their mothers (80%). The median mYPAS score was 37.5 (quartile range, 23.4-51.6) in unaccompanied children, and 55.0 (quartile range, 27.9-65.0) in accompanied children, with an estimated median difference of +11.8 (95% CI of 0 to 23.4; p = 0.044). There were no significant differences in the mean salivary cortisol levels. Conclusion: The level of anxiety was higher in accompanied children. There were no differences in salivary cortisol levels between both groups. Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC):RBR-9wj4qvy.

ABSTRACT

To analyze the correlation between stress, anxiety, and depression with the Burnout syndrome in undergraduate students at a federal public university. This is an exploratory descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, which used an online questionnaire for data collection, which took place from December 2021 to March 2022, available by email. 169 students participated in the study, in which the correlation between sociodemographic variables and the dimensions stress, anxiety and depression showed that Brazilians, especially women and practitioners of some religion, showed higher scores. As for the Burnout syndrome, high values were observed for the emotional exhaustion and professional efficacy dimensions, but low scores for the disbelief dimension. When verifying the correlation between the anxiety, depression and stress scale and the Burnout syndrome, a negative relationship between its domains and student effectiveness was noticed. A correlation was also revealed between depression and emotional exhaustion.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Physically active individuals seem to have better indicators of mental health and stress compared to their insufficient physical activity peers. However, the analysis of physical activity levels and mental health indicators of bank employees has not been explored during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To analyze depression, anxiety, stress, and physical activity scores in bank employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: An associative comparative strategy was applied with 21 bank employees (24-44 years, 71.4% women) in a city in Northeast Brazil. An online questionnaire was applied exploring sociodemographic and anthropometric information, indicators of anxiety, depression, and stress (EADS-21), occupational function, and physical activity levels. The correlation between the EADS-21 scores and the physical activity levels was obtained using Spearman's Rho coefficient and the comparison of indicators between insufficiently active and physically active workers was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The physical activity levels showed a weak and inverse correlation with anxiety (Rho= −0.15), depression (Rho= −0.35), and stress (Rho= −0.11) scores. In addition, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between insufficiently active vs. physically active bank employees concerning anxiety (P= 0.719), depression (P= 0.548), or stress (P= 0.842). Conclusion: Mental health and stress indicators were inversely associated with regular physical activity levels. In addition, scores of anxiety, depression, and stress were similar between physically active and insufficiently active bank employees.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic auto-immune inflammatory systemic disease, in which the infiltration of mo-nonuclear cells in the exocrine glands leads to physiological and morphological changes. This pilot case-control study aims to describe the profile, evaluate the oral condition, quality of life (QoL) and psychological condition, through complete clinical examination, OHIP-14 and DASS-21 questionnaires. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with seven individuals with a final diagnosis of SS (case group [CG]), and seven individuals with symptoms of dry mouth (control group [GCO]), consulting at the institution from January to November 2021. participants were selected by free demand and those previously seen at the institution with a diagnosis of SS between 19 and 70 years of age. The questionnaire OHIP-14 was applied to assess the patient's quality of life, where seven dimensions are assessed, subdivided into 14 questions through the Lickert scale (0 to 4) assigned by the individual and which quantifies the impact of oral health on QoL. The questionnaire DASS-21 assessed the psychological condition of the patient, which presents seven questions for each emotional state (depression, anxiety, and stress), totaling 21 questions. The general clinical condition, evolution of SS, oral clinical condition, and the profile of this population were related to QoL factors and psychological conditions, using these assessment instruments. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding stimulated salivary flow. The only symptom with a statistically significant difference in the CG was difficulty in phonation (p< 0.001). The dimensions related to functional limitation and physical pain showed the most expressive results (p=0.004) (p=0.025), showing a strong negative impact on the QoL of the CG individuals, and the dimension related to disability was the least affected (p=0.684). The analysis of depression, anxiety, and stress did not show statistically significant results between the groups; however, in the CG, 5 (71.42%) individuals showed a severe degree of depression, anxiety, and stress. Conclusions: Individuals in the case group showed some changes, with a strong negative impact on QoL compared to the control group.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the status quo of stress response, self-care and job performance among nurses in emergency department, and to analyze whether self-care has a mediating effect between stress response and job performance. Methods:This was a cross-sectional survey. From February to April 2022, 467 emergency department nurses from 11 tertiary hospitals in Changsha were investigated and analyzed by using random cluster sampling method, general data questionnaire, Stress Response Questionnaire, Self-Compassion Scale and Nursing Performance Scale. Results:The total score of nurses′ Stress Response Questionnaire was (78.02 ± 26.78) points, the total score of Self-Compassion Scale was (81.75 ± 22.23) points, and the total score of Nursing Performance Scale was (74.05 ± 21.57) points. Stress response was negatively correlated with self-care and work performance ( r=-0.452, -0.572, both P<0.01), and self-care was positively correlated with work performance ( r=0.515, P<0.01). Self-care played a partial mediating role between stress response and job performance, accounting for 26.98% of the total effect. Conclusions:Self-care is an intermediary variable between emergency department nurses′ stress response and work performance. Nursing managers should pay attention to emergency department nurses′self-care and stress response levels, and evaluate them regularly in order to take timely intervention measures to improve their self care ability, reduce stress response, and improve work performance of emergency department nurses.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the influencing factors of psychological stress in patients with coronary heart disease, and the effect path of joint decision-making between doctors and patients on psychological stress and to provide reference for the formulation of management plan for physical and mental health of patients with coronary heart disease. Methods:From July 2017 to April 2022, 715 retired patients with coronary heart disease hospitalized in General Hospital of the People′s Liberation Army and Air Force Hospital in Western Military Theater of the People′s Liberation Army were investigated adopted cross-sectional survey method by simple random sampling using general information questionnaire, Stress Response Questionnaire, Shared Decision-making Questionnaire between Doctors and Patients, Uncertainty in Illness Scale and Simple Coping Style Questionnaire. By using structural equation modeling, the direct and indirect influence paths of shared decision-making between doctors and patients on psychological stress were analyzed. Results:The scores of psychological stress, shared decision-making, uncertainty in illness, positive coping style and negative coping style were 49.81 ± 11.06, 79.24 ± 8.68, 76.40 ± 12.56, 21.67 ± 5.51 and 8.90 ± 3.12. Correlation analysis showed that the scores of psychological stress were positively correlated with the scores of uncertainty in illness and negative coping style ( r=0.661, 0.591, both P<0.01), and negatively correlated with the scores of shared decision-making between doctors and patients and positive coping style ( r=-0.623, -0.451, both P<0.01). Path analysis showed that shared decision-making between doctors and patients had a direct effect on psychological stress, accounting for 23.81% of the total effect; the uncertainty in illness, positive coping style and negative coping style played a part of intermediary role between the joint decision-making between doctors and patients and psychological stress, accounting for 32.35%, 8.40% and 17.93% of the total effect respectively; the uncertainty in illness and negative coping style had a chain mediating effect between them, accounting for 17.51% of the total effect. Conclusions:It suggests that the shared decision-making between doctors and patients with coronary heart disease is not only directly related to psychological stress, but also indirectly related to psychological stress through uncertainty in illness and coping style, among which coping style may play a role of "pivot" to a certain extent.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this study was to explore associated variables with sense of coherence (SOC), and dental environment stress (DES) in a sample of dental students. All undergraduate (n = 474) and graduate (n = 105) dental students enrolled in the first semester of 2020 at a public university in southern Brazil were invited to participate. Data collection was performed by an online questionnaire, which included information related to sociodemographic and educational characteristics, biopsychosocial factors, aspects related to feelings experienced in the COVID-19 pandemic, and the SOC scale. The study outcome (DES) was measured by a validated tool. Linear regression analyses were performed to identify the associations between the outcome and all independent variables. A total of 408 students were included (response rate: 70.5%). The overall mean score of the DES scale was 73.95 (SD: 24.13). Students with higher SOC scores were observed to have significantly lower DES scores (βGRADUATE: -0.376; 95%: -0.482 to -0.271; βUNDERGRADUATE: -0.478; 95%:-0.658 to -0.297). Female undergraduate students (β: 11.788; 95%CI: 7.161-16.415) had higher DES scores compared with undergraduate male students. In addition, the presence of anxiety symptoms when providing dental care to patients with symptoms or suspected COVID-19 infection was associated with higher DES scores (β: 10.460; 95%CI: 5.644-15.277) among undergraduate dental students. The level of stress was higher in non-white undergraduate students than white (β: 8.912; 95%CI: 3.581-14.244). Among both undergraduate and graduate dental students, higher SOC scores were associated with lower DES.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors that are most correlated with the levels of functional disability in patients with fibromyalgia. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study in which 42 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia according to the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology reported their status using the following questionnaires: the Beck Depression Inventory, the Perceived Stress Scale 14, the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, the Visual Analog Pain Scale, and the Health Assessment Questionnaire. RESULTS: Moderate to severe levels of depression (Beck Depression Inventory: 22.35±10.39), moderate to severe functional disability (Health Assessment Questionnaire: 1.28±0.58), and high levels of stress (Perceived Stress Scale 14: 31.59±10.02) were found. The correlation adjusted by multiple regression as a function of the Health Assessment Questionnaire indicated a negligible to weak positive correlation with perceived stress (r=0.11), while a moderately strong positive correlation was observed with the Visual Analog Pain Scale (r=0.55). Regarding physical exercise, one of the pillars of the treatment, a moderate negative correlation was found with the Health Assessment Questionnaire (r=-0.4). CONCLUSION: The pain levels were moderately influenced by depression severity. The factors most linked to functional disability are due to the pain levels but not to the perception of stress.
