ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the application effect of Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise(Mini-CEX) in clinical teaching rounds of nursing students, and to provide reference for improving the quality of clinical teaching.@*Methods@#A total of 120 nursing students from June 2017 to June 2018 were divided into control group and intervention group by the time of practice with 60 cases each. The control group adopted traditional nursing teaching rounds, while the intervention group adopted Mini-CEX-based nursing teaching rounds. The comprehensive results of nursing students′practice, Mini-CEX and autonomous learning ability of the two groups were compared and analyzed.@*Results@#The overall evaluation of Mini-CEX of nursing students was (7.23 ± 0.51) in the intervention group and (5.27 ± 1.12) in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (t=12.337, P <0.01). The excellent rate of nursing students was 58.3%(35/60) in the intervention group and 30.0%(18/60) in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=10.914, P <0.01). The total score of autonomous learning ability was (114.85 ± 6.27) in the intervention group and (90.78 ± 8.22) in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (t=18.034, P < 0.01). The comprehensive results of nursing students′ practice was (87.04 ± 6.46) in the intervention group and (74.35 ± 6.04) in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (t=11.115, P< 0.01).@*Conclusions@#Clinical teaching rounds based on mini-clinical exercise assessment scale can improve the clinical comprehensive service ability, self-learning ability and humanistic care ability of intern nurses.

ABSTRACT

@#Literature has documented that student nurses undergo stress in their academic and clinical setting. This raises concerns because stress during undergraduate training may result in psychological or emotional impairment during the nurses’ professional life and ultimately affect the quality of patient care. The Objective of the study was to study the prevalence of stress, and the association between sociodemographic factors, stressors and coping strategies with stress. This was a cross-sectional study on 96-year 1-3 nursing students from a government university done between 2015-2018. Bahasa Malaysia translated The General Health Questionnaire, Stressors in Nursing Student Scale Questionnaire and Brief COPE Questionnaire was used in this study. This study had Malay (95.9%) and female (91.7%) dominated population. The prevalence of stress in student nurses was 25%. No association was reported between sociodemographic factors and stress. Among the 4 stressors educational, clinical, confidence and financial, clinical stressor scored the highest mean 6.40 (SD±3.66). Confidence stressor (AOR=1.26 95% CI 1.04-1.53) was the only stressor associated with stress. The top 3 coping strategies practiced by the student nurses were religion (praying), acceptance and planning. Self-blame (AOR 8.18 95% CI 1.86-35.91) was the only coping strategy associated with stress. Stress management programmes, and workshops on stress and coping strategies should be conducted yearly to ensure a well-balanced environment for good learning experiences and prevent stress related health problems and improved academic performance.

ABSTRACT

Background: Nurses are the “front line” staff in most health systems and their contribution is recognised as essential in meeting development goals and delivering safe and effective care (ICN, 2007). Nurses are in high demand not only in developed countries but also in developing countries like Malaysia. However, more than 70% of Malaysian hospitals currently do not have adequate nursing staff. At least 174,000 nurses need to be trained by 2020 to meet WHO’s nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:200. The purpose of this study is to identify the main factors that influence the nursing students’ decision to choose nursing as their career. Method: A descriptive study guided by Self Determination Theory was used for this study. A 29- item questionnaire adapted from McCabe, Nowak and Mullen (2005) was distributed to all students in a nursing college (n=117). Results: The five main reasons for choosing nursing as a career were “ability to help others”, “training was provided on the job”, “ability to work closely with people”, “parental advice”, and “accommodation was provided while training”. The top three main domains that influenced the nursing students’ decision to choose nursing as their career include “travel opportunities of nursing”, “intrinsic attraction of nursing” and “immediacy of support on entry to nursing”. A total of 19 (0.2%) will not choose nursing if given a chance. The main reasons were “want to take another course”, “no time to spend with family” and “nursing is a stressful job”. Conclusion: The findings of this study provided valuable information regarding motivating factors which attract the current generation to join nursing. It is of concern that items representing nurses’ image were not rated highly

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review articles and theses on Korean nursing students' stress, identifying overall research trends regarding such stress and suggesting strategies for stress management and nursing education system. METHODS: The subjects for this study were 31 articles selected from three databases according to specific inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Twenty-seven articles described survey research and four articles reported on experiments. Twenty-two studies related to stress from clinical practice among nursing students. Thirty-one articles reported on 40 regions and 44 colleges. Seventeen types of tools were used to measure nursing students' stress. The reported reliability of tools ranged from .76 to .96, and the mean score for nursing students' stress fell between 1.98 and 3.95. CONCLUSION: The findings from this review article indicate that nursing students exhibit different levels of stress as a result of school. Thus, they must learn to cope with stress to support their physical and psychological health. Moreover, finding ways to help student nurses handle job-related stress will require research related to the overall school, the curriculum, learning, and the life of nursing students, as well as stress intervention.

ABSTRACT

To develop the awareness of in student nurses during their clinical nursing practice for the prevention of legal disputes and protection of patients’ safety. Enough efforts should be made to strengthen legal education at the beginning, to enrich legal knowledge in the middle, and to stress nursing safety and related countermeasures towards the end of the clinical nursing practice. It is necessary to have student nurses under the supervision of the teachers make sure that they are aware of and abide by the law all the time.
