ABSTRACT

Skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) are common diagnosis in both the pediatric and adult populations and include abscesses and cellulitis. An abscess is a focal, contained, purulent infection with a clearly defined “cavity” and surrounding inflammation involving the deep subcutaneous tissues. There has been overall increase in SSTIs, with a concomitant rise in the incidence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). We here report a case of facial subcutaneous abscess in neonate, a 20-days-old male full term baby born to a G2P1D1 mother via LSCS in view of non-progression of labor with birth weight of 2.8 kgs presented in our hospital with subcutaneous abscess diffusely present on the left side of the scalp & face. Informant was father with good reliability. All relevant investigations sent & IVantibiotics like meropenem & vancomycin started. Incision & drainage done by pediatric surgeon & 100 ml pus removed. IVantibiotics given for 14 days. In summary, though upper & lower limb skin abscesses are more common, but one should not miss the facial subcutaneous abscess for their prompt and effective management.

ABSTRACT

A patient with cystic echinococcosis was presented with primary lesions in the waist and hip. The case was misdiagnosed as subcutaneous abscess at initial diagnosis, and then definitively diagnosed as echinococcosis by means of imaging examinations and anti-Echinococcus antibody test. This case was reported with aims to improve the awareness of cystic echinococcosis among clinical physicians to avoid and reduce the misdiagnosis and missing diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Subcutaneous mass was found in ICR mouse during daily health observation in the breeding colony of the National Laboratory Animal Center, Mahidol University, Thailand. The animal was subsequently culled and humanely sacrificed due to the institutional preventive medicine policy. Microbiological and histopathological studies were performed for definitive diagnosis. The results described that the case was subcutaneous abscess and chronic dermatitis in association with Staphylococcus sciuri infection without epizootic and mortality. This was determined as the first reported case in Thailand occurring in mouse. Reproductive stress and abrasion skin wound may be the predisposing factors. Although pathogenic staphylococci in laboratory animals are limited to S. aureus and S. xylosus, S. sciuri opportunistic properties, natural history, and heterogeneity should not be forgotten.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aseptic subcutaneous abscesses are characterized by deep, round lesions histologically consisting of neutrophils, without evidence of microorganisms on culture. Although these are sometimes reported in healthy individuals, most are reported in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. A 79-year-old man without underlying disease presented with multiple skin-colored nodules and masses on his face and extremities 4 years ago. All of the microbiology studies for bacteria and fungi were negative and he did not respond to antibiotics. However, the lesions improved markedly after systemic prednisolone treatment. We diagnosed his lesions as aseptic subcutaneous abscesses. Further studies to evaluate inflammatory bowel disease were negative. Here, we report a case of multiple aseptic subcutaneous abscesses without an underlying disease.

ABSTRACT

Nocardia is a significant opportunistic pathogen in patients with compromised immunity. Nocardia asteroides was isolated from subcutaneous abscesses on the left thigh and shoulder of a renal transplant recipient. Direct examination of the aspirated pus showed branching filaments that were gram-positive and acid fast. The abscesses were drained and the patient responded to high dose co-trimoxazole therapy.

ABSTRACT

Verrucous carcinoma is an uncommon low-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma. It is clinically characterized by its verrucous and fungating appearance and it is histologically characterized by well-differentiated epithelial proliferations that push the underlying dermis. There are some reports of verrucous carcinoma associated with abscess or fistula, but there have been no case reports of verrucous carcinoma complicated with a subcutaneous abscess involving the adjacent tissue in Korea. We report here on a case of verrucous carcinoma that presented with focal verrucous nodule infiltrating the adjacent subcutaneous tissue with diffuse subcutaneous abscess formation.

ABSTRACT

We describe localized subcutaneous abscesses on the right axilla of a 34-year-old woman due to M.chelonae infection in the previous incision and drainage site. The infection responded to treatment with anti-Tb medication. Mycobacterium chelonae is one of the rapidly growing atypical mycobacteria, belonging to Runyon group IV, which is ubiquitous in the environment. Primary cutaneous infections have been described after skin injury in immunocompetent patients and produce chronic nodule or draining abscesses. Disseminated infections have been reported in immunocompromised patients.

ABSTRACT

We present here a case of phaeornycotic subcutaneous abscess caused by Wangiella dermatitidis in a 34-year-old male, who had multiple asymptomatic subcutaneous masses of 7 months duration over the neck and right axilla. ]n this case, we could observe typical gross colony morphology of W. dermatitidis. which showed creamy greyish, yeast-like colony with aerial mycelia after 3 to 4 weeks. ]n histopathologic study, we found mixed cell granuloma and fungal structure in biopsy specimen. We comfirmed W. dermatitidis by exoantigen test, and treated the subcutaneous lesions by surgical excision and ketoconazole with good result. This case is the first reported in Korea.
