ABSTRACT

This study has combed and analyzed the characteristics of medical doctoral supervisors and the enrollment status from 2015 to 2018 in Tongji University School of Medicine. The results show that the distribution of doctoral supervisors' age, gender and professional title is relatively balanced. The enrollment situation shows the clustering trend. There are obvious differences in enrollment among clinical medical disciplines, and the scales of doctoral supervisors and doctoral students are not matched and unevenly distributed. It is essential to give an overall consideration in discipline resources and optimize enrollment allocation, for improving the construction of doctoral supervisors and the quality of doctoral training.

ABSTRACT

Considering the existing shortages in evaluation criteria, training systems and management modes, administrators from graduate schools of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) performed reforms and practice for the establishment of tutor teams which should meet the requirements for culturing talented medical graduates in recent years. We have established a multidimensional evaluation criteria system oriented by both representative academic achievements and the quality of graduate students. We have strengthened horizontal cooperation with relevant administrative departments in SJTUSM. We also emphasize the concepts of "training the trainees" coordinated with administrators in the training units to implement reform measures. Herein we have summarized the main reform measures in SJTUSM to constantly improve the quality of postgraduate tutor team and guarantee high-level postgraduate education.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relationship between family supportive supervisor behavior and compassion fatigue of operating room nurses and the mediating role of bidirectional work-family conflict, that is, work interference with family and family interference with work. Methods:In November 2021, a total of 350 operating room nurses in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, the Second Hospital of Shandong University, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University were surveyed by convenience sampling method with questionnaires of self-made general information questionnaire, Work-Family Conflict Scale, Family Supportive Supervisor Behavior Short-Form, and Professional Quality of Life Scale. Results:Family supportive supervisor behavior was negatively correlated with work interference with family and compassion fatigue ( r= -0.211, -0.245, both P<0.01). Work interference with family was positively correlated with compassion fatigue and family interference with work ( r=0.383, 0.274, both P<0.01). Family interference with work was positively correlated with compassion fatigue ( r=0.249, P<0.01). There was no correlation between family supportive supervisor behavior and family interference with work ( r=0.040, P>0.05). The structural equation model showed that bidirectional work-family conflict had multiple chain mediating effects between family supportive supervisor behavior and compassion fatigue ( P<0.05), and the mediating effects were -0.082, accounting for 21.6% of the total effect. Conclusions:Family supportive supervisor behavior can directly or indirectly affect compassion fatigue through work-family conflict. Managers can adopt supportive human resource management policies by implementing family supportive supervisor behavior, to help operating room nurses flexibly balance work-family relationships and reduce role conflict, so as to alleviate the compassion fatigue of operating room nurses.

ABSTRACT

The task of control analysis is to preserve the evolutionary impetus and edge of psychoanalysis and prevent the inertia towards the lowest common denominator, and the degeneration of evolved ideas and practices into common assumptions and prejudices. A psychoanalytic organization needs to maintain standards while also preserving the organization as a vibrant and dynamic site for the continuing development and re-invention of psychoanalysis as a living symbolic structure. Through a control analysis every analyst acquires a unique analytical style that does not refer to ego preferences and idiosyncrasies, but to a singular and new subjective articulation of the pre-existing elements of a traditional structure. Without a personal analysis, the analysis of the countertransference and of projective identification in supervision can function as a resistance to the personal analysis which is the most important factor for the self-authorization of the analyst within a psychoanalytic organization. The analyst is not authorized by supervision or the supervisor, but by the personal analytical experience with the unconscious, the symptom, and its post-analytical effects in the form of what Lacan calls the sinthome. Lacan said that at the end of analysis, the analysand or the future analyst does not identify with the analyst, but rather with his/her sinthome.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Workers spend most of their social lives at work and have relationships of varying nature with people in the workplace. Direct supervisors, in particular, have a direct and lasting impact on workers, which may influence workers' mental health. Depression is very prevalent worldwide, and social concern about the disease is on the rise. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of direct supervisors' behavior on the depressive mood of Korean wage workers. METHODS: We used data from the 4th Korean Working Conditions Survey held in 2014; 22,212 participants were included in the analysis. The quality of a direct supervisor's behavior was categorized from 0 (= lowest) to 5 (= highest) points. The degree of depressive mood was measured on a scale from “normal mood” to “likely depression” based on the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the quality of the direct supervisor's behavior and the depressive mood of wage workers. RESULTS: After multivariable adjustment, significantly increased odds ratio (OR) for likely depression was found in the 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0 points of the quality of the direct supervisor's behavior compared to 5 points. After stratification for the level of satisfaction with working conditions, the OR of the unsatisfied groups was higher than that of the satisfied groups. CONCLUSIONS: Likely depression was found to be significantly associated with a low quality of direct supervisor's behavior. This association was stronger in workers who were not satisfied with their working conditions. This study suggests that proper management of the direct supervisor's behavior is needed to reduce the risk of depression among Korean wage workers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Workers exposed to hazards without adequate protections are at greater risk of injury and illness. Supervisor activities have also been associated with injury risk. We examined the interplay between supervisor safety support and occupational health and safety (OHS) vulnerability on workplace injury and illness. METHODS: A survey was administered to 2,390 workers employed for more than 15 hrs/week in workplaces with at least five employees who had a direct supervisor. We examined the combined effects of hazard exposure with inadequate protection (OHS vulnerability) and supervisor support on workplace injury and illness, using additive interactions in log-binomial regression models. RESULTS: OHS vulnerability and lack of supervisor support independently increased the likelihood of physical injuries at work. Crude and adjusted models showed that the risk of physical injury was at least 3.5 times higher among those experiencing both OHS vulnerability and a lack of supervisor support than individuals without OHS vulnerability and with a supportive direct supervisor.Workers who experienced vulnerability were at less risk if they had a supervisor who was supportive. CONCLUSION: In workplaces where workers experience one or more types of OHS vulnerability, having a supportive supervisor may play an important role in reducing the risk of injury and protecting workers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#We assessed the role of social support in presenteeism by examining organizational commitment among Chinese healthcare workers.@*METHODS@#One thousand four hundred thirty-four healthcare workers from 6 hospitals in 4 Chinese cities completed a questionnaire measuring presenteeism, social support, and organizational commitment. With organizational commitment as the mediator, regression analyses and structural equation modeling were used to test the model.@*RESULTS@#Organizational commitment was directly inversely associated with presenteeism (β = - 0.42, p 0.05). The correlation between supervisor support and coworker support was significant (β = 0.71, p <0.001). Supervisor support and coworker support were significantly positively associated with organizational commitment (β = 0.41, p < 0.001, and β = 0.14, p < 0.001, respectively).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Supervisor support was more important in promoting organizational commitment, while coworker support was more effective in reducing presenteeism. The mediating effect of organizational commitment was significant.

ABSTRACT

Objective To learn the effects of family supportive supervisors on medical staff turnover intention. Methods The scales of family supportive supervisor behavior scales, work-family conflict scale and turnover intention scale were used in the study. The data were collected from a questionnaire survey of 214 army tertiary hospitals′ medical staff during October to December 2017. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to establish a model to understand the influence of family supportive supervisor behavior, two-way conflict between work and family, using the independent variables, on turnover intention of medical staff. Results The and family supportive supervisor behaviors had a negative explanation to medical staff turnover intention ( β = - 0. 211, P < 0. 01), work interference with family had a positive explanation to it (β = 0. 358, P < 0. 01), family interference with work had an obscure explanation to medical staff turnover intention (β = 0. 104, P > 0. 05). Work interference with family had a partially mediating effect which influenced family supportive supervisor behaviors on medical staff turnover intention. Conclusions Family supportive supervisor behavior, as an organizational support, can effectively alleviate the work interference on family for medical staff and thus minimize their turnover intention.

ABSTRACT

The theoretical framework classifies the ideal types of graduate supervisors, which is based on "the attention that the supervisor pays on academic research" and "the attention that the supervisor pays on clerical work".The author elaborates the characteristics of each type of supervisor and enumerates some possible causes for the different types of supervisors.According to the occupational characteristics of the graduate supervisors in China and taking into account the two influence factors as "personal ambition" and "relative deprivation",a theoretical model of supervisor type transformation model based on academic research and clerical work is presented and the causes of this transformation are also briefly analyzed, which provides the theoretical basis for the related research and management practice of graduate supervisors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In modern society, many workers are stressed. Supervisors' support or behavior can affect the emotional or psychological part of the worker. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of supervisor's behavior on worker's stress. METHODS: The study included 19,272 subjects following the assignment of weighted values to workers other than soldiers using data from the Fourth Korean Working Condition Survey. Supervisors' behavior was measured using 5 items: “supervisor feedback regarding work,”“respectful attitude,”“good conflict-resolution ability,”“good work-related planning and organizational ability,” and the encouragement of participation in important decision making. Job stress was measured using 1 item: “I experience stress at work.” Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the effects of supervisors' behavioral, general, occupational, and psychosocial characteristics on job stress in workers. Organizational characteristics associated with supervisors' behavior were also analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed that supervisors' provision of feedback regarding work increased workers' job stress (OR = 1.329, 95% CI = 1.203 ~ 1.468). When a supervisor respect workers (OR = 0.812, 95% CI = 0.722 ~ 0.913) or good at planning and organizing works (OR = 0.816, 95% CI: 0.732 ~ 0.910), workers' job stress decreased. In particular, the two types of supervisor behaviors, other than feedback regarding work, were high in private-sector organizations employing less than 300 employees. CONCLUSION: Supervisors' behavior influenced job stress levels in workers. Therefore, it is necessary to increase education regarding the effects of supervisors' behavior on job stress, which should initially be provided in private-sector organizations with up to 300 employees.

ABSTRACT

Most medical postgraduates desire to develop their research mentality and experiment skills and become capable medical students with potentialities and innovation consciousness.Medical postgraduates can be classified into academic, general, and clinical types based on their needs, education background, experiences and personal abilities, while their supervisors fall into high-, medium-, and low-expectation types according to their research abilities and demands.Cross-pairing analysis shows that a high-level cooperation can be achieved when the type of a postgraduate matches that of his supervisor, otherwise a low-level cooperation may result. Therefore, it is essential to optimize the two-way choice system between postgraduates and supervisors, establish a moral code for supervisors and academic standards for postgraduates, and further enhance their interaction.A new relationship should be formed between medical postgraduates and supervisors, which is postgraduate-centered, emphatic on conversation, discussion, equality, and mutual trust and respect, and capable of promoting the harmonious development of academic activities.
