ABSTRACT

The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) has established an annual leadership symposium celebrating innovative leadership in the health sector. The 2022 symposium under the theme "Health Sector Development in Ghana; The Power of Good Leadership" was held in honour of Professor Samuel Ofosu-Amaah (the laureate), an Emeritus Professor of Public Health at the University of Ghana, about his leadership legacy. This article reflects on the leadership challenges in the health sector, the lessons learnt from the symposium, and the way forward. Leadership challenges identified in the health sector included the need for mentorship and coaching, the importance of teamwork and networking for delivering high-quality healthcare, and the role of leadership and governance in the health system. Key lessons from the symposium focused on skills in leading an event organisation, effective collaboration and teamwork, and learning from recognising prominent leaders' contributions to the health sector while these leaders are still alive. Key lessons from the personal and professional life of the laureate included a focus on giving back to the community, building mentorship of health leaders, being a catalyst of change, leadership and governance in public health institutions and publication of research findings. Suggestions were made to name the School of Public Health of the University of Ghana after Professor OfosuAmaah, to include a leadership and management module in all training modules at the GCPS and to establish a health leadership "Observatory" to focus on research on how leadership influences

ABSTRACT

Since 1973 the World Symposia on Pulmonary Hypertension(WSPH)proceedings have summarised the scientific advances and future needs in this field through the efforts of multiple task forces, each focusing on a different aspect of pulmonary hypertension(PH). The task forces presented their consensus opinion after the 6 th WSPH held in Nice in 2018.This is an interpretation for the overview of the 6 th WSPH,which includes the following four aspects, translational medicine and precision medicine of PH, clinical research on PH, relevant research on several common types of PH, patient management and patient association.Among them, the most significant change is the new definition of hemodynamic standard of PH, but the implementation and use of the new standard, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of patients between the two standards still need further research and exploration. In addition, the importance of patient participation and management in the diagnosis and treatment and effective care of PH was clearly proposed for the first time.

ABSTRACT

The International Symposium on Ligaments and Tendons (ISL&T) was inaugurated in 2000 in Orlando, Florida, USA. The primary purpose of the ISL&T was to call attention to the importance of ligament and tendon (L&T) research and to bring together bioengineers, biologists, and clinician-scientists in a forum where the most current research findings could be shared, critiqued and discussed. In each symposium since 2000, there have been a number of stimulating, thought-provoking discussions on current hot topics and future challenges. The ISL&T has taken place for 15 years now, and as a result, the L&T field has significantly expanded in quantity while the quality of research has also been greatly improved. In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Journal of Medical Biomechanics, this article will highlight some of the major advances in L&T research over the past three decades. Topics to be covered include tissue mechanics, mechanobiology, injury and healing mechanisms, and tissue repair and regeneration.

ABSTRACT

The world has now rediscovered the value of traditional medicine. Much traditional medicine in South-East Asian countries originated from the medicines of ancient China, and developed independently within those individual countries. As a measure toward information exchange and communication among these countries, the World Health Organization's Western Pacific Regional Office (WHO-WPRO) has published its International Standard Terminologies (IST) for use globally. While domestically in Japan, Kampo is now taught as a regular subject in all medical schools. In this light, there is significant meaning to holding conference with the purpose of understanding the current status of Japanese Kampo around the world, and considering the best ways to disseminate Kampo information globally. The International Conference of Kampo Medicine (provisional title) has been held thus far a total of three times, to address the current status of Japanese Kampo, Japanese Kampo issues from global point of view, as well as the current status of traditional medicine in China and Korea also originating from the ancient Chinese medicine. The conference was entitled &lsquoWhy Kampo? Why Now? Why Me?—The reason why foreign medical doctors worldwide choose Japanese Kampo, and the situation or development of Kampo medicine in their own countries”, in which foreign doctors in Japan, medical students, and leading Kampo medical practitioners were invited to give lectures, which were followed by free discussions by all participants.

ABSTRACT

Music therapy(MT) is generally classified into recreational MT in broad sense and therapeutic MT in the narrow meaning. In the latter cases, observing and evaluating the case is necessary. The MT sessions are held rather common for the aged people. We must set a long-term goal in response to the cases; to prevent the reducing mental/physical function and to avoid dementia for the healthy people, to maintain/improve the various functions for the patients with dementia and cerebral vascular accident (CVA), to aim the advancement of QOL for the patients with severe status or in the palliative care. Various evaluating methods are seen: Bando proposed 20 items including sensation, behavior and ADL/QOL; Saji proposed 10 items including activity, persistence, cooperation, emotion, intelligence, singing/playing, handling, walking, smooth action, verbal response. Matsui summarized general MT diagnostic table and MT evaluation table for the aged, and other methods by Kitamoto (Utatsuyama), Okazaki/ Monma, and Akaboshi are seen. The number of the music therapists registered by Japanese Music Therapy Association is increasing, and 1st Asian International Symposium of Music Therapy was held in March 2009. Thus, MT has become more important in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).<br>

ABSTRACT

On this coming June 12, 2009, the 2nd JSAM International Symposium on Evidence-based Acupuncture on "Evidence of the Effectiveness of Acupuncture for Low Back Pain"is to be held in Saitama. We briefly outline the background and expected controversial points in this symposium.<BR>There are three sessions including 1) Present status of RCT research on low back pain, 2) Treatment method for low back pain in China, Korea and Japan based on the database research, and 3) Sham acupuncture. When we assess the effectiveness of acupuncture for low back pain within the realm of Evidence-Based Medicine, the following discussions may be expected:<BR> 1) Therapeutic effect of sham needling -are we able to distinguish placebo effect?<BR> 2) Masking using sham needle -are we able to conduct double-blind trials on acupuncture?<BR> 3) Specific treatment technique -which factors contribute to "more effective acupuncture technique"?<BR>Most of invited speakers are specialists who published their papers on RCT or sham needle in top medical journals in the world. We hope that issues, such as working together with other medical professionals and reflecting evidence to medical policies, to be tackled in the future for the development of acupuncture will become clearer in this symposium.
