ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to explore the effect of Catalpol on the cerebral infarction size in acute phase, water content and inflammatory reaction of early recovery after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pM-CAO). Adult male Sprague-dawley rats were subjected to chemical method to establish MCAT model. The detec-tion was made on neurobehavioral symptoms, cerebral infarction volume and water content at 24 h after surgery. The content of intedeukin-6 (IL-6), intedeukin-10 (IL-10) and nuclear factor kappa Bp65 (NF-κBp65) were de-tected after pMCAO with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed that 24 h after MCAT, Catalpol 15-60 mg·kg-1 can significantly improve the neurobehavioral symptoms (P < 0.01, or P <0.001). The Catalpol 15 mg·kg-1 can significantly reduce cerebral infarction volume (P < 0.05). The Catalpol 30-60 mg·kg-1 can significantly reduce water content (P < 0.05). Catalpol 30-60 mg·kg-1 can significantly improve neurobehav-ioral symptoms from the 7th day after pMCAO. On the 14th after pMCAO, the content of IL-10 and NF-κBp65 of ischemia brain had no difference compared with sham-operated group. The IL-6 level of ischemia brain was obvi-ously reduced than the sham-operated group(P < 0.05). The intragastric administration of Catalpol 15 mg·kg-1 for 14 days can reduce the content of NF-κBp65 in the ischemia brain of model rats (P < 0.05). It was concluded that Catalpol can improve neurobehavioral symptoms of acute and subacute phase after cerebral ischemia, reduce infarcts and water content. These effects may not be related with its inhibition of inflammatory derived from cere-bral ischemia.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to investigate the effective on BODE index and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptom scores with acupoint application therapy for patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in stabilization period of lung-spleen qi-deficiency syndrome. A total of 120 cases of inpatients and out-patients of the stable phase of COPD with TCM syndromes of lung-spleen qi-deficiency were selected. Conven-tional therapy was used in the treatment. All patients were divided into four groups, which are the hyperthermia plus acupoint application group, simple acupoint application group, simple hyperthermia group and blank control group. Each group contained 30 cases. All patients were given 6-week treatment. And the BODE index and TCM symptom scores were observed pre-treatment and post-treatment. The results showed that the BODE index was im-proved in the hyperthermia plus acupoint application group and the simple hyperthermia group. Symptoms of coughing, phlegm, wheezing, shortness of breath were reduced in all hyperthermia plus acupoint application group, simple acupoint application group and simple hyperthermia group. Symptoms of abdominal distention, spontaneous perspiration, easy to catch cold and cold sensation on the back were reduced in the group of hyperthermia plus acupoint application. Symptoms of spontaneous perspiration, easy to catch cold and cold sensation on the back can be improved in the group with simple hyperthermia. The symptom of spontaneous perspiration was improved in the group of simple acupoint application. It was concluded that acupuncture point application in combination with hy-perthermia therapy can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life, improve exercise tolerance in patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the plasma levels of adrenomedullin (ADM) and urotensin Ⅱ ( U-Ⅱ ) in children with capillary bronchiolitis, and their clinical significance. Methods One hundred and fifty three children with capillary bronchiolitis and 36 healthy children were recruited. Plasma levels of ADM and U- Ⅱ were measured at acute stage ( <7days) and convalescent stage (>14days) of airway inflammation. The relationship of plasma ADM and U-Ⅱ levels with symptom scores was evaluated. Results Plasma levels of ADM and U-Ⅱ in acute stage of capillary bronchiolitis were significantly higher than those in convalescent stage and healthy controls ( ADM: t = 20. 57 and 26. 26, P < 0. 01; U-Ⅱ: t = 14. 27 and 7. 61, P < 0. 01 ) , and there were significant differences among mild, moderate and severe capillary bronohiolitis (F = 245. 94 and 304. 79, P <0. 01). Plasma level of U-Ⅱ in convalescent stage of capillary bronchiolitis was lower than that of healthy controls (t = 6. 99, P <0. 01 ) , but ADM was still in a higher level ( t = 8. 98, P < 0. 01 ). In the convalescent stage, there was significant difference on U-Ⅱ levels among mild, moderate and severe capillary bronchiolitis ( F = 25.69, P < 0. 01 ) , but no significant difference was observed for ADM levels (F = 2. 25 , P > 0. 05 ) . Plasma levels of ADM and U- Ⅱ in acute stage showed positive correlation with symptom scores, and the regression coefficients were 0.884 (P =0. 000) for ADM and 0. 943 (P = 0. 000) for U-Ⅱ . Conclusion Plasma ADM and U-Ⅱ levels in children with capillary bronchiolitis are increased in acute stage and correlated with the symptom scores, which may serve as laboratory indicators for assessing the severity of the disease.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although allergic rhinitis is one of the most common factors associated with the development of chronic rhinosinusitis, the role of allergy in the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis was not well defined. This study is aimed to determine whether the allergy or factors such as nasal polyp, asthma, aspirin sensitivity can induce more extensive chronic rhinosinusitis, and to determine whether the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis depends on the severity of allergy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 98 chronic rhinosinusitis patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were evaluated. The severity of chronic rhinosinusitis was assessed by CT scores and symptom scores. An allergic prick test, MAST (Multiple-antigen simultaneous test), the total IgE, and a serum eosinophil count were evaluated for diagnosis and assessment of the severity of allergy. Influences of another factors such as nasal polyp, asthma, and aspirin sensitivity to the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis were evaluated. RESULTS: Although the symptom scores of allergic chronic rhinosinusitis patients were greater than those of non-allergic chronic rhinosinusitis patients, there were no CT score differences between the two groups. Differences in the CT scores and symptom scores in allergic chronic rhinosinusitis patients according to the severity of allergy were statistically insignificant. Nasal polyp, asthma, and aspirin sensitivity did not induce more severe chronic rhinosinusitis. CONCLUSION: Allergy may be associated with the development of chronic rhinosinusitis, but the severity of allergy is not correlated to the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis.

ABSTRACT

The tissue obtained from transurethral prostatectomies was evaluated histologically and correlated to the clinical findings in 85 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue slides of each patients were examined from 10 to 25 chips. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the following histology: predominantly glandular type (26 patients), predominantly stromal type (24 patients) and mixed type which has equal proportions of glandular and stromal hyperplasia(35 patients). There was no significant difference among the groups in patients age, prostatic size. weight of resected tissue and also no difference was noted in total symptom scores, irritative symptom scores and obstructive symptom scores at preoperative. postoperative and follow-up examination. Preoperatively there was significant difference among the three histologic groups in maximum flow at uroflowmetry, the glandular type had a mean maximum flow of 3.8ml. per second compared to 4.8ml, per second in the stromal type and 2.3ml, per second in the mixed type (p<0.05). But there was no difference at postoperative and follow up period. Acute retention was noted in mixed type predominantly (62.9%). In acute retention patients, preoperatively there was no difference among the groups in total symptom scores and irritative symptom scores, but postoperatively there was significant difference among the groups (p<0.05) Notwithstanding the difference of postoperative time, the differences of total symptom scores and irriative symptom scores among the groups were lost at follow up period. Conclusively, there was no significant difference in symptom scores among the three histologic groups but prevalence of acute retention was high in mixed group. The effect of transurethral resection of prostate according to the histologic type of benign prostatic hyperplasia seemed to be worse in glandular type postoperatively, but there was no significant difference among them at follow-up period.
