ABSTRACT

Objective: To conduct a numerical taxonomy research on the origin plants of Fructus Xanthii and to identify this crude drug, so as to provide evidence for the classification, identification and germplasm optimization of Xanthium genus. Methods: Fruits of Xanthium plants from 25 populations in China were collected and cultivated in the same location. Their growing conditions and morphological characteristics were observed after seedling emergence. And 20 taxonomic characters of the plants such as growth cycle, height of the whole plant, length of leafstalk, length and density of involucre, thorn, length of beak and color of ripe fruits, etc. were selected for detailed observation, recording and analysis. Original data matrix X= {Xii} 25×20 was established by means of 25 operational taxonomic units(OTU) and related 20 groups of characteristic data. The established matrix was analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis on SPSS 13.0 software. Results and Conclusion: The origin plants of Fructus Xanthii from 25 populations of China fell into four groups, largely consistent with the morphological identification results of this study. The first group was identified as Xanthium sibiricum, the second as X. mongolicum, the: third as X. sibiricum var. subinerme, and the fourth was temporarily named as Shenzhen-type cocklebur Xanthium sp.. The Shenzhen-type cocklebur was special in some taxonomic characters and was possibly a cultivated variety of Xanthium genus. The origin plants of Fructus Xanthii in China can be systematized into 3 species and 1 type, which has been added to the existing taxonomic criteria. The cluster analysis method in this study can be applied for discrimination of Xanthium plants and crude drugs.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To compare the difference of fingerprints of Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. from different places of origin. [Methods] The chemical components of Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. from 6 places of origin were detected by thin-layer chromatography. [ Results ] The thin-layer chromatogram of volatile components of Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. from different places of origin was similar. The contents of methanol-extract and petroleum-ether-extract from Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. planted in Gaoyao, Guangdong differed greatly from those in other places of origin, which can be used to identify the herb of Pogostemon cablin ( Blanco) Benth. from Gaoyao, Guangdong. [Conclusion] Thin-layer chromatographic fingerprints can be used as the parameter to differentiate Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. from different places of origin.

ABSTRACT

The development and utilization of herbal medicinal resourses in south China were reviewed from the following aspects: (1) resources investigation; (2) introduction of South China herbal medicine (SCHM) to North China; (3) culture technology of green herbal medicine; (4) building of the base of good agriculture practice; (5) species study and quality evaluation of SCHM, and (6) product development of SCHM. It is concluded that the research on development and utilization of SCHM contributes a lot to reducing SCHM import, saving foreign exchange and ensuring the safety, effect, output stability and quality control in the production of medicinal material.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To establish a method for rapid identification of Fructus Citri Sarcodactylis (FCS) from different production areas. [Methods] Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was adopted to identify FCS. The height and position of the characteristic absorption peaks, and I value (a quantitative parameter of peak height ratio) were compared in FCS from different production areas. [Results] Each kind of FCS had their fixed range in peak height ratio I: 0.7-0.9 in FCS from Guangdong, 1.3-1.6 in FCS from Sichuan, 0.9-1.1 in FCS from Zhejiang, indicating that I value can be used to identify FCS from different areas . [Conclusion] For the identification of FCS from different production areas, FTIR spectroscopy is an effective method, in which there is no need for isolation, purification and chemical treatment.

ABSTRACT

[ Objective ] To perfect the quality standard of Xiaojinqiancao. [Methods ] The comparative study was conducted by trait identification, microscopic identification, thin-layer chromatography and ultraviolet spectroscopy. [Results] Two species of Xiaojinqiancao are obviously different in the above identifications. [Conclusion] Although two species of Xiaojinqiancao have an intimate parentage in the origin, there are significant differences in their pharmacognosy and chemical component.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To compare and identify the different cultivated varieties of Amormun villosum for providing scientific evidence for the selection, breeding, standardization and industrialization. [Methods] Source appraisal, character identification and scanning electron microscope technique were applied to observe and compare the appearance of the original plant, the properties of the medicinal material and the outside characteristics of pollen of Amomum villosum in Yangchun, Guangdong province. [Results] The two cultivated varieties of Amomum villosum in this area, long-fruit and round-fruit types, are quite different in the appearance and the characteristics of pollen. [Conclusion] It is suggested that long-fruit Amomum villosum and round-fruit Amomum villosum should be the selected varieties for breeding.

ABSTRACT

The microstructure of mycorrhiza of wild Cymbidium ensifolium, collected from the mountains of north Guangdong was studied. The results showed that this species possesses the typical mycorrhizal structure of orchid plant. Mycorrhizal fungi invaded the cortex parenchyma by velamen and exodermis, and then, form pelotons and expanded part of area of cortex. The intracellular mycelium was digested and absorbed with clumps of digested material in some cells.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To assess the quality of Citrus grandis Osbeck. Var. tomentosa Hort. (CGO Var. TH) and Citrus grandis (L. ) Osbeck (CGO). [Methods] The macroscopic feature and microscopic structure of CGO Var. TH and CGO were compared. Their content of total flavones (TF) was determined by spectrometry, naringin content and fingerprint by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the content of rhoifolin by thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Their expectorart, anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects were observed by phenol red test, auricular swelling test and ammonia-water-induced cough method. [Results] Obvious differences such as villi in the exocarp and non-grandular hair in the stem existed in the macroscopic feature and microscopic structure of CGO Var. TH and CGO. The contents o{ total flavones and naringin in CGO Var. TH were markedly higher than that in CGO and the rhoifolin content in CGO Var. TH was ten times as much as that in CGO. Markedly difference was also found in their fingerprint. The expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects in CGO Var. TH were better than those in CGO. [Conclusion] The quality of CGO Var. TH is much better than that of CGO.
