ABSTRACT

Abstract The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a fish of primary importance in South American aquaculture, principally in the Amazon region and has a particularly unique diet in the wild. Oryza spp, or Wild rice as it is commonly known, is native to the floodplains of muddy rivers in the Amazon region. The aim of this study was to analyze the physical performance and the effects of dietary levels of Oryza spp. via the hematological parameters, total food intake, conversion efficiency, growth ratio and swimming performance of this fish. Diets containing 45% Oryza spp. induced the best performance in tambaqui. Diets containing 15% and 30% did not affect these indices, thus indicating that this amount of Oryza can be used as an alternative energy source for this important species within Brazilian aquaculture.

ABSTRACT

Tambaqui,Colossoma macropomum is a fish of primary importance in Brazilian aquaculture and in the Amazon region in particular. The aim of this work is to analyze the combined effects of physical training and levels of dietary cassava (Manihot esculenta) on the hematological parameters, food intake, conversion efficiency, growth ratio and swimming performance of this fish. A diet for tambaqui consisting of 30% cassava caused decreases in weight gain and specific growth rate compared with the control group. Diets containing 15% or 45% cassava did not affect these indices and did not cause hematological changes in tambaqui juveniles, indicating that some amount of cassava can be used as an alternative energy source for this important aquaculture species.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Streptococcosis is one of the major causes of mortality in tilapia's creation in Brazil, inducing great economic losses. As soon, the study objectived to determinate the frequency of isolation and identification the Streptococcus agalactiae in organs different of Oreochromis niloticus naturally infected, derived from eight fish farms in the northern region of the state of Paraná, that presented clinical signs characteristics of streptococcal disease. However, blood samples and fragments (kidney, liver, spleen, heart and brain) were collected. These all samples were plated on solid medium of brain and heart infusion (BHI) added 5% ovine blood and incubated at 29ºC for 7 days in aerophilic conditions. Behind, the bacterial growth and from the macro and microscopic features, colonies compatibles with Streptococcus sp. gender, were selected. The species were identified by PCR reaction and confirmed by sequencing of 16S rDNA gene. The results exhibited that in tilapia of Nile infected with S. agalactiae the isolation is more common in brain, kidney and liver in descending order.

ABSTRACT

Objective. The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of glyceryl guaiacolate ether (GGE) and compare the times of induction, recovery, hematological changes, total protein and glycaemia among anesthetics in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Materials and methods. A total of 60 tilapia distributed in 3 aquariums (N=20) were used, which formed the group benzocaine (100 mg/L), eugenol (50 mg/L) and guaiacol glyceryl ether (9.000 mg/L). After the induction of anesthesia fish blood samples were collected to determine the complete hemogram and glycemia. Then the animals were placed in aquariums with running water for assessing the anesthesia recovery. Results. It was verified that GGE showed longer induction and recovery times as well a significant increase (p<0.05) of glycemia, when compared with the other groups (p<0.05). The concentration of total protein did not differ between groups (p>0.05). An increase in the number of monocytes in the group treated with benzocaine (p <0.05) was observed in the analysis of the hematological parameters with no difference between groups for other variables. Conclusions. Eugenol and benzocaine allow rapid induction and recovery in Nile tilapia, without evidence of stress during handling and GGE showed high induction and recovery times, being inadequate for anesthetic use in Nile tilapia.

ABSTRACT

Sorubim trigonocephalus Miranda et Ribeiro, 1920 is popularly known as slipper, migratory specie of economic importance. It is much appreciated in gastronomy because it has good flavor and no intermuscular bones (spines). Specimens were collected on a stretch of the Teles Pires river, located in Alta Floresta/MT, anesthetized and euthanized in aqueous solution of benzocaine, fixed with 10% formaldehyde and transferred to the Laboratory of Animal Anatomy of Unemat to be analyzed and described the characteristics of the buccopharyngeal cavity. With a premaxilla well developed and head dorsoventrally flattened, S. trigonocephalus show out located on the ventral portion of the head mouth wide slit. The upper lip pigmentation had dark gray with small light areas, wider than the and without pigmentation. Was identified four dentigerous regions in in the anterior oral cavity and two in the pharynx region, both with viniliform tooth. The posterior portion of the oral cavity was bounded laterally by four pairs of gill arches that decreased in size from first to last pair, formed by two branches: the higher, shorter, and the lower, longer. The buccopharyngea cavity of S. trigonocephalus showed similar to other teleosts described in the literature, and is adapted to eating habits with diet ictiophagic carnivore and differing only by the absence of a structural tongue and pre maxilla well developed showing viniliform tooth.

ABSTRACT

A great number of pharmacological compounds is found in the Brazilian marine diversity. This study evaluated the anticoagulant potential of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) isolated from the skin of palombeta Chloroscombrus chrysurus and guaiúba Ocyurus chrysurus. GAGs were extracted with crude papain in 0.1 M sodium acetate buffer (pH 5.0) containing 5 mM cysteine and 5 mM EDTA, followed by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose column. The chemical composition (contaminant proteins and total carbohydrates) and the analysis by 0.5% agarose gel electrophoresis of fractions were also determined. Anticoagulant assays were performed by activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) using normal human plasma and standard heparin (193.00 IU mg-1). The obtaining and fractionation procedures of GAGs were effective and similar chromatographic profiles were verified between the species. A similar mobility to dermatan sulfate was revealed for C. chrysurus. This GAG also showed a low activity of 3.30 IU mg-1.

ABSTRACT

Histology and morphometry of the eye in the freshwater Paracheirodon axelrodi (Characiformes: Characidae). The visual system of Teleost fishes has a wide range of adaptations. The eye has suffered modifications, mainly towards better sensitivity and visual resolution according to specific environmental conditions. In that way, this organ is so important for survival. In spite of being the most commercialized Orinoquía species, and one of the most important ornamental fish worldwide, there are almost no studies on the communication systems of P. axelrodi (including vision). We studied the eye in ten individuals of P. axelrodi, with a mean total length of 2.7 cm (SD= 0.2, n= 20). We measured eye relative size (TRO) after sacrifice. Heads were processed for hematoxylin-eosin, and 8 μm thick sections were obtained. Images were digitalized for histological identification and morphometrics. The relation between TRO and body length was 9.8% (SD= 1.1, n= 20); lens was spherical with a relative size of 64.3% (SD= 4.9, n= 20). Rete mirabilis choroid was composed mainly by capillaries, while sclera was composed of cartilaginous tissue. Retina with eight layers and two membranes. An areae centrales was observed in the posterior retina. Iris covered by a simple cubic epithelium. Cornea of endothelial tissue with two membranes. Pupil almost circular, with a naso-caudal elongation. Measures of retina thickness were as follows: lateral retina 144.5 μm (SD= 5.4, n= 20), temporal retina 210.4 μm (SD= 14.8, n= 20). Lens measurements were: dorso- ventral 759.6 μm (SD= 31.7, n= 20), antero-posterior 763.4 μm (SD= 30.7, n= 20). Cornea thickness was 27.6 μm (SD= 4.3, n= 20); iris thickness was 18.9 μm (SD= 1.9, n= 20); rete mirabilis choroid 22.2 μm (SD= 3.2, n= 20) and sclera: 15.9 μm (SD= 1.2, n= 20). This species has a typical Teleost eye conformation. The retina was thicker in the posterior area, probably related to the presence of neuron groups. This modification allows for a better sharpness and visual resolution. The TRO, areae centrales in the retina, and thin cornea, suggests the need of a well developed visual system resulting from a predatory diet. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (4): 1107-1118. Epub 2009 December 01.

ABSTRACT

Macro and microscopy analyzes on the pyloric caeca of the species Mylossoma acanthogaster, M. duriventre, M. aureum, Pygocentrus cariba and Cynopotamus venezuelae were performed. The specimens were captured in locations of the Catatumbo, Orinoco, Apure and Cunaviche rivers in Venezuela. P. cariba showed the bigger number of pyloric caeca varying with number from 14 to 34; the other studied species had a number in between, while C. venezuelae showed the smaller number varying from 9 to 11 caeca. Histologically from the lumen to the most external layer, the mucosa is formed by long and deep folds covered by single cylindrical epithelial tissue with caliciform cells, striated sheets; the submucosa is conformed by lax conjunctive tissue; the musculature consists of three strata of muscular fibers, except in M. aureum which has only two strata and the serous formed by a simple epithelial plane. The histomorphology of the pyloric caeca of these species is similar to that of the majority of teleosts.

ABSTRACT

The caudal skeleton is one of the most important tools to evaluate teleostean interrelationships, but just the anatomy of few species have been investigated. Black-striped pipefish (Syngnathus abaster) has never been examined for its caudal morphology. Here, red alizaryn is applied as specific staining for calcified structures, providing a better understanding of caudal skeleton organization. Our results and interpretation just partially fit with previous knowledge on other Syngnathus species. This emphasizes both the importance of facing same problems with new technics and methodologies, and the existence of a heterogeneous situation between close-related taxa.

ABSTRACT

The regional distribution and relative frequency of some endocrine cells in the principal pancreatic islets of two teleosts, Silurus asotus Linne (Siluridae) and Siniperca scherzeri Steindachner (Centropomidae), which have similar feeding habits, were observed using specific antisera against insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and bovine pancreatic polypeptide (bovine PP) using the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) method. Spherical to spindle shaped cells were demonstrated in the principal pancreatic islets in both species of teleost fishes. However, they were not detected in the exocrine portions nor the pancreatic ducts. Insulin-immunoreactive cells were located in the central regions of the principal pancreatic islets at high frequency in both species. Glucagonimmunoreactive cells were restricted to the peripheral regions of the principal pancreatic islets in both species. They formed a mantle zone in the peripheral regions of Silurus asotus with moderate frequency, and occupied a narrower mantle zone in Siniperca scherzeri with moderate frequency. In addition, glucagonimmunoreactive cell cores were also found in the peripheral zone of some principal pancreatic islets of Siniperca scherzeri. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were dispersed in the central zone of the principal pancreatic islets of Silurus asotus with moderate frequency, but were located in the peripheral regions with low frequency in Siniperca scherzeri. Bovine PPimmunoreactive cells were found in the peripheral region and the mantle zone of the principal pancreatic islets with low and rare frequency, respectively in both species. In conclusion, the regional distribution and relative frequency of endocrine cells in the principal pancreatic islets of Silurus asotus showed general patterns similar to those of other teleostean fishes. But, some speciesdependent distributional patterns and/or relative frequencies, particularly in glucagon-, somatostatin- and bovine PP-immunoreactive cells, were detected in the principal pancreatic islets of Siniperca scherzeri

ABSTRACT

This contribution deals with the scanning electron microscopic surface structure of olfactory epithelium in four hillstream teleosts from the glacialfed river Alaknanda in Garhwal Himalaya (UP, India)· The closely related species—Schizothorax plagiostomus, Schizothorax richardsonii (both bottom dweller, bottom feeder, herbiomnivorous) and Schizothoraichthys progastus (column dweller, column feeder, carniomnivorous) reveal the predominance of different types of olfactory receptor cell types separately in their respective olfactory epithelium while the distinctly related species Crossocheilus latius latius with similar nature as first two (i·e· bottom dweller, bottom feeder, herbiomnivorous) displays the presence of more microvillous cells in the olfactory epithelium· Possibly, the occurrence of particular receptor cells in a fish species is related to the ecological and feeding behaviours with distinct mechanism of olfaction·
