ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#There are few multi-city studies on the association between temperature and mortality in basin climates. This study was based on the Sichuan Basin in southwest China to assess the association of basin temperature with non-accidental mortality in the population and with the temperature-related mortality burden.@*METHODS@#Daily mortality data, meteorological and air pollution data were collected for four cities in the Sichuan Basin of southwest China. We used a two-stage time-series analysis to quantify the association between temperature and non-accidental mortality in each city, and a multivariate meta-analysis was performed to obtain the overall cumulative risk. The attributable fractions (AFs) were calculated to access the mortality burden attributable to non-optimal temperature. Additionally, we performed a stratified analyses by gender, age group, education level, and marital status.@*RESULTS@#A total of 751,930 non-accidental deaths were collected in our study. Overall, 10.16% of non-accidental deaths could be attributed to non-optimal temperatures. A majority of temperature-related non-accidental deaths were caused by low temperature, accounting for 9.10% (95% eCI: 5.50%, 12.19%), and heat effects accounted for only 1.06% (95% eCI: 0.76%, 1.33%). The mortality burden attributable to non-optimal temperatures was higher among those under 65 years old, females, those with a low education level, and those with an alternative marriage status.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Our study suggested that a significant association between non-optimal temperature and non-accidental mortality. Those under 65 years old, females, and those with a low educational level or alternative marriage status had the highest attributable burden.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To explore suitable storage and transportation conditions for “internet plus drug delivery” under high- temperature conditions. METHODS A survey on high-temperature conditions in summer in Beijing was conducted; a retrospective analysis was conducted on “internet plus drug delivery” orders in our hospital from July 2021 to June 2022, summarizing the proportion and delivery range of drugs under different storage and transportation conditions. Additionally, simulation and validation experiments were performed to investigate optimal drug storage and transportation devices for “internet plus drug delivery” in Beijing under high-temperature conditions in summer. RESULTS The monthly average temperature in Beijing from June to August consistently exceeded 25.0 ℃ between 1991 and 2022. From July 2021 to June 2022, a total of 104 drugs were required to be stored below 25.0 ℃, accounting for 31.23% of the 333 drugs listed in our hospital’s “internet plus drug delivery” catalog in Beijing. These drugs were delivered 1 058 times, accounting for 19.63% of the total deliveries. Simulation and validation experiments demonstrated that the average maximum temperature during the next-day delivery process of “carton + foam box + composite aluminum film pearl cotton + 500 g ice bag×2 + gas column bag” was 9.6 ℃, the average minimum temperature was 2.7 ℃, and all the temperatures remained below 15.0 ℃, which could effectively ensure the quality of drugs. CONCLUSIONS Under the high-temperature conditions in summer in Beijing, the storage and transportation device of “carton + foam box + composite aluminum film pearl cotton + 500 g ice bag×2 + gas column bag” can meet the temperature requirements specified in the drug storage instructions for Beijing intra-city drug delivery.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate whether skeletal development of the Pantanal Caiman (Caiman yacare) is similarly influenced by temperature variation and controlled increases in embryo motility. All eggs were incubated at 90% humidity and 29 °C for the first 45 days. Thereafter, the incubation temperature was either maintained at 29 °C and embryos were treated with 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on days 46, 47, 48, and 49 (Group I, 29 °C 4-AP, n = 15); maintained at 29 °C (n = 14; Group II); or at 33 °C (n = 14, Group III). Embryonic movement was measured using an Egg Buddy® digital monitor on days 30, 35, 42, 49, 56, and 60, at which point embryos were euthanized and samples were collected for analysis. No differences were observed between groups with varying incubation temperatures. In contrast, embryonic motility was greater in embryos treated with 4-AP (P 0.001) on day 49, and this was associated with higher proportions of snout-vent and hand lengths. This study demonstrates for the first time that pharmacologically induced increases in embryo motility result in phenotypic changes to the proportion of elements during prenatal ontogeny, thereby effectively altering the adaptation of the species to specific environments.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Air temperature is a climatic factor that affects the incidence of dengue, with effects varying according to time and space. We investigated the relationship between minimum air temperature and dengue incidence in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and evaluated the influence of socioeconomic and geographic variables on this relationship. This is a time series study with analysis conducted in three distinct stages: modeling using a distributed lag non-linear model, meta-analysis of models obtained, and meta-regression with geographic and socioeconomic data. Minimum temperature was a protective factor at extreme cold temperatures (RR = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.56-0.76) and moderate cold temperatures (RR = 0.71; 95%CI: 0.64-0.79), and a risk factor at moderate hot temperatures (RR = 1.15; 95%CI: 1.07-1.24), but not at extreme hot temperatures (RR = 1.1; 95%CI: 0.99-1.22). Heterogeneity of the models was high (I2 = 60%), which was also observed in meta-regression. Moderate and extreme cold temperatures have a protective effect, while moderate hot temperatures increase the risk. However, minimum air temperature does not explain the variability in the region, not even with the other variables in meta-regression.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Despite attempts to develop the plastination technique in Bolivia, standardized results have not yet been achieved that could be communicated via scientific publications. There is a great deal of misunderstanding around the technique, confusing it with classic techniques of inclusion in different types of resin, such as polyester and epoxy, but these protocols are not plastination. The aim of this work was to communicate the first standardized room-temperature plastination protocol with silicone in Bolivia, with the unique feature of doing so at the altitude of the city of La Paz, thus constituting the first communication of a plastination technique at 4,150 m.a.s.l. sub sede La Paz, La Paz, Bolivia.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the association between adolescents' physical activity and the Brazilian capitals' built and social environment. The units of analysis of this ecological study were the 26 capitals and the Federal District, with data from the National Adolescent Health Survey (2012). The outcome variable was the reported regular physical activity (PA) of ninth graders in Brazilian schools. Exposure variables included characteristics of the natural environment, socioeconomic and educational indicators, urban infrastructure, urban violence, and sociocultural factors retrieved from several secondary sources of Brazilian databases. We adopted multiple linear regression to verify the association between PA and exposure variables. The percentage of active adolescents was 33.0% (95%CI: 32.1; 33.9). In the final model, higher PA was associated with lower temperature, higher Primary Education Development Index, the higher percentage of ramps for wheelchair users, and a higher percentage of leisure-time active adults. The data show that climatic and educational factors, the infrastructure, and the social environment of the capitals can contribute to Brazilian adolescents complying with the recommended weekly PA levels.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the temperature changes that the different methods of agitation of irrigants promote on the external dental root surface. Nine extracted human lower premolars were standardized by cone-beam computed tomography and used. The root canal was instrumented with a Reciproc 40.06 file. Temperature measurement was performed using K-type thermocouple sensors attached to the middle, cervical, and apical thirds of the teeth. The teeth had their roots immersed in distilled water at 37ºC, which were distributed into 3 experimental groups according to the mechanical agitation methods to be studied. US Group (n=3), Irrisonic Ultrasonic Tip activated through ultrasound; EC Group (n=3), Easyclean Tip coupled to a contra-angle low-speed handpiece; XP Group (n=3), XP-endo Finisher file coupled to an endodontic electrical motor. Temperature measurements were performed simultaneously with agitation and irrigation of intracanal irrigants. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software with a significance level of 5%. For multiple comparisons, the Tukey test was used. The association between mechanical agitation methods and root third was statistically significant. Regarding the temperatures recorded on the external surface of the roots, the ultrasonic tip was significantly higher than the XP-endo Finisher file and the Easyclean tip, which did not differ from each other. Regarding the ultrasonic tip, the external temperature in the middle third (39.46ºC) of the root was significantly lower than in the cervical (40.41ºC) and apical third (40.53ºC). None of the agitation methods of irrigants studied presented heating above 47ºC, and their use is safe for periodontal tissues.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: For the purposes of teaching anatomy, the use of cadaver preparations is considered the most efficient way of ensuring that students retain knowledge. Nevertheless, in Ecuador the use of animal specimens in universities must comply with the internationally accepted principles of replacement, reduction and refinement (3Rs). Plastination is an alternative technique which allows organs to be conserved in the long term and complies with the 3Rs. The object of the present work was to use cold-temperature silicone plastination with Biodur® products to obtain long-lasting, easy-to-handle canine organs for use as tools for the teaching of animal anatomy. Six canine cadavers were obtained from local animal protection charities. The hearts, brains and kidneys of the cadavers were dissected and fixed with formaldehyde 10 %. They were then dehydrated with acetone at -20 °C. The specimens were impregnated with Biodur® S10:S3 (-20 °C) and finally cured with Biodur® S6. We plastinated six hearts, twelve kidneys, four brains and one encephalic slice of canine. The application of cold-temperature plastination to canine organs followed the parameters established for the conventional protocol, enabling us to obtain organs of brilliant appearance, free of odours, in which the anatomical form was preserved. Thus the technique helped us to comply with the 3Rs, as we obtained easy-to-handle teaching models to replace fresh or formaldehyde-fixed samples for the teaching-learning of the canine anatomy.

ABSTRACT

Background: Transport of neonates is often neglected, which results in high mortality of neonates during transport. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of kangaroo mother care (KMC) in terms of hypothermia prevention during transport from hospital to home for low birth weight neonates. Study design: Randomized controlled trial. Participants: A total of 152 low birth weight neonates being discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit of our hospital between March, 2021 and August, 2022. Intervention: Neonates in the study group (n=76) received KMC during transport from the hospital to home, while the control group (n=76) did not receive KMC during transport. Axillary temperature was recorded in both groups at the time of discharge, every 5 minutes during transport, and on reaching home. Outcomes: Hypothermia episodes in neonates while receiving KMC compared to neonates not receiving KMC. Results: Primary endpoint of the study was moderate hypothermia. During transport, 23 (30.3%) neonates in the control group experienced moderate hypothermia during transport, which was statistically significant [0% vs 30.3%; P<0.001]. From 10 minutes of transport till the neonates reached home, the mean (SD) temperature in the study group was significantly higher than in the control group [ 36.8 (0.23) °C vs 36.6 (0.3) °C; P<0.001] at time 15 minutes. Similar results were noted in preterm neonates [36.7 (0.25) °C vs 36.5 (0.29) °C; P<0.001] at time 15 minutes. The number of hypothermia episodes was more in the control group than in the study group during most of the transport time [7.6% vs 43.2%; P<0.001] at time 15 minutes. Conclusions: Low birth weight neonates receiving KMC showed optimal thermoregulation, whereas a high incidence of moderate hypothermia was seen among neonates receiving conventional care during transport.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of temperature on torsional strength and angular deflection of two experimental NiTi rotary instruments manufactured from Blue and Gold thermal treatments and with identical cross-sections. A total of 40 experimental NiTi instruments 25.06 and with a triangular cross-section and manufactured from Blue and Gold thermal treatments were used (n=20). The torsional test was performed in the 3 mm from the tip of the instrument according to ISO 3630-1. The torsional test evaluated the torsional strength and angular deflection to failure at room temperature (21°C ± 1° C) and body temperature (36°C ±1°C). The fractured surface of each fragment was observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed using an unpaired t test for inter and intra-group comparison and the level of significance was set at 5%. The results showed that the body temperature did not affect the torsional strength and angular deflection of the instruments when compared with room temperature (P>0.05). However, at body temperature, the Blue NiTi instruments presented significantly lower angular deflection in comparison with Gold NiTi instruments (P<0.05). There was no significant difference regarding the torsional strength of the instruments at body temperature (P>0.05). The temperature did not affect the torsional strength of the instruments manufactured from Blue and Gold technology. However, the Blue NiTi instruments presented significantly lower angular deflection than Gold instruments at 36°C temperature.

ABSTRACT

Background: Pre-analytical, analytical, or post analytical variations can induce, change, or alter the tests results. Laboratory errors lead to unnecessary delays in test report and also increased costs by repeat samples which have become a pain to the patients. Aims and Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine alterations in the concentration of serum sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and ionized calcium (Ca++) concentration with reference to air exposure, time, temperature, and humidity. Materials and Methods: Fifty samples as case and 50 samples as control were included from a normal healthy population in this study. After getting the samples, first readings were taken for case samples and were uncapped and the remaining samples were set aside capped at 24°C, 20% humidity for half an hour and followed by second reading which was taken. Results: Variation in the mean serum sodium between groups is 0.06 mEq/L (0.04%) and 0.08 mEq/L (0.07%) which is very negligible and insignificant (P > 0.05). The mean level of serum K+ in cases is 4.35 mEq/L and in controls is 4.27 mEq/L. After half an hour, the mean level of serum K+ in cases is 4.51 mEq/L and, in controls, is 4.29 mEq/L. Hence, the variation in results in cases is 0.16 mEq/L (3.68%) and in controls is 0.02 mEq/L (0.47%) which is highly significant (P < 0.05). The mean level of serum Ca++ in cases is 1.15 mmol/L and in controls is 1.17 mmol/L. After half an hour, the mean level of serum Ca++ in cases is 1.09 mmol/L and in controls is 1.16 mmol/L. Hence, the variation in results in cases is 0.06 mmol/L (5.22%) and in controls is 0.01 mmol/L (0.85%) which is highly significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Air exposure significantly alters the serum K+ and Ca++ level, but the alteration in serum Na+ level is not significant.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To optimize the condition for prokaryotic expression of recombinant tetanus toxin heavy chain fragment C(rTTHc) protein. Methods The rTTHc gene fragment after optimization of codon was inserted into prokaryotic expression vector pET30a,low temperature expression vector pCold Ⅱ and high temperature expression vector pBV220separately.The constructed recombinant plasmids were transformed to E.coli BL21(DE3).The expression levels and solubility of recombinant protein at various temperatures were compared. Results The expression level of pBV220-rTTHc after induction at 42 ℃ for 4 h was relatively low,and the protein solubility was poor. The expression level of pET30a-rTTHc after induction at 37 ℃ for 4 h was equivalent to that of pCold-rTTHc after induction at 15 ℃ for 8 h,while the solubility of the former was slightly lower than that of the latter. However, both the expression level and solubility of pET30a-rTTHc after induction at 28 ℃ for 4 h were high, while the expression time was short. Conclusion The pET30a-rTTHc induced by2 mg/mL IPTG at 28℃ is optimal for high expression of rTTHc protein.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To establish a hyperuricemia rat model through the high temperature-humidity treatment, and monitor its vital signs and biochemical indicator characteristics, as well as observe the changes of renal histomorphology and ultrastructure. Methods:Male SD rats were randomly divided into control(CON) group, potassium oxonate(PO) group and high temperature-humidity(HTH) group, 6 rats each. The experiment lasted for 6 consecutive weeks. Rats from PO group was given 250 mg/kg PO by gavage every day. The rats from HTH group were treated with a special thermostatic incubator for one hour each day after gavaging 250 mg/kg PO. Serum uric acid, creatinine and other indicators were detected every 2 weeks. After 6 weeks, the kidney tissues were collected. The morphological changes and urate crystal deposition of kidney tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining, Masson′s trichrome staining and gomori staining, while the ultramicrostructural changes of kidney were observed by transmission electron microscope. Results:Two weeks after the experiment, the average serum uric acid values of PO group and HTH group increased significantly, HTH group was higher than PO and CON groups[(133.9±17.8), (107.6±12.4), and (85.7±4.1) μmol/L, P=0.001]. And after 6 weeks, the HTH group was still higher than the other two groups[(115.1±27.8), (82.7±13.9), and (72.9±17.8) μmol/L, P=0.008). The average serum creatinine in HTH group was slightly higher than that in PO group and CON group at 6 weeks[(46.2±4.7), (38.1±6.0), and (28.3±6.3) μmol/L, P=0.001]. Light microscope showed partial renal tubular dilatation in PO group, but renal tubular epithelial cells swelling and inflammatory cells infiltration were more significant in HTH group. The ultrastructural changes such as glomerular podocyte swelling were found in HTH group by transmission electron microscope. Conclusion:In this study, we had successfully established a hyperuricemia rat model by simulating the high temperature-humidity environment combined with potassium oxyzinate after 2 weeks of experiment. After 6 weeks of modeling, it was found that the high temperature-humidity induced rat models possessed a relatively higher and stabler serum uric acid level than that of the traditional chemical medicine induced rats. The method can be applied to the research of pathogenesis and pharmacotherapy of hyperuricemia caused by high temperature-humidity environment.

ABSTRACT

In the process of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), various factors such as the temperature of replacement fluid, the flow of fluid and the circulation of blood in cardiopulmonary bypass, lead to the temperature of the blood injected back into the body is often lower than normal. It leads to the decrease of body temperature and the occurrence of hypothermia, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. In clinical practice, medical staff mostly reduces the occurrence of hypothermia in patients with CRRT by means of the heating device of the machine, the heating of the liquid temperature box for cardiopulmonary bypass, and the application of heating blankets, but the effect is not ideal. Therefore, medical staff of the department of critical care medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University designed a heating device and temperature control system for CRRT dialysis fluid bag, and obtained the National Invention Patent of China (ZL 2021 1 0334906.7). The device includes a heating and thermal insulation device and a temperature control system, wherein the heating and thermal insulation device is composed of the body of the heating dialysis fluid bag and the temperature control structure, which solves the problems of safe and efficient liquid heating and thermal insulation during the CRRT process. The temperature control system can display the dynamic state of the patient's body temperature, adjust the temperature of the dialysis fluid bag in time, and monitor the temperature of the blood transfusion in real time through the cooperation of the five modules of data collection, data handle, data analysis, regulation and display. This design is applied to CRRT, which can achieve precise control of body temperature of critically ill patients, and has certain clinical significance.
