ABSTRACT

Objective@#To identify a pig model with bilateral external ear defects accompanied by aural atresia and investigate its application in plastic surgery.@*Methods@#Erhualian×Shaziling F2 pig inbreeding population was introduced, and examination of external ear morphology was conducted in all individuals. Temporal computed tomography scanning and mutational detection of HOXA1 gene were conducted in one affected and one normal individuals.@*Results@#In Erhualian×Shaziling F2 pig inbreeding population, there were 57 normal and 18 affected individuals among the 75 pigs. Affected subjects presented bilateral external ear defects accompanied by aural atresia; temporal computed tomography scanning showed bilateral aural atresia and dysplasiaof middle ear; and gene detection identified homozygous mutation of HOXA1 gene.@*Conclusions@#Pig model with HOXA1 gene homozygous mutation resembles human microtia at different levels. Our findings provide the theoretical basis for its application to study further pathological mechanism for human microtia.

ABSTRACT

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative clinical syndrome characterized by progressive language impairment diagnosed when three core criteria are met. First, there should be a language impairment (i.e., aphasia) that interferes with the usage or comprehension of words. Second, the neurological work-up should determine that the disease is neurodegenerative, and therefore progressive. Third, the aphasia should arise in relative isolation, without equivalent deficits of comportment or episodic memory. The language impairment can be fluent or non fluent and may or may not interfere with word comprehension. Memory for recent events is preserved although memory scores obtained in verbally mediated tests may be abnormal. Minor changes in personality and behavior may be present but are not the leading factors that bring the patient to medical attention or that limit daily living activities. This distinctive clinical pattern is most conspicuous in the initial stages of the disease, and reflects a relatively selective atrophy of the language network, usually located in the left hemisphere. There are different clinical variants of PPA, each with a characteristic pattern of atrophy. The underlying neuropathological diseases are heterogeneous and can include AlzheimerÆs disease as well as frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: dengue is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Las Americas due, among other factors, to the increase of Aedes aegypti populations. OBJECTIVE: to ascertain the space and time behaviour of Ae. aegypti in Cienfuegos municipality from 2006 to 2008. METHODS: the study was conducted in Cienfuegos municipality located on the central south part of Cuba. Larvae and adult mosquitoes were collected throughout the municipality in the 2006-2008 period using the methodology of the national dengue vector eradication program. RESULTS: twelve mosquito species were found; Culex quinquefasciatus, Ochlerotatus taeniorhynchus, Gymnometopa mediovittata and Aedes aegypti were the most abundant. The containers showing the highest positivity to Ae. aegypti presence were water tanks on the ground, various reservoirs, and larvitraps; the highest positive indexes were reported in August through November. The highest amounts of adult mosquitoes were captured in July through October. Of the 2 methods, capture at rest was more effective in collecting more adult mosquitoes with 134 (96.41 percent), 30 (96.78 percent) and 27 (100 percent), respectively and highly significant difference, p< 0.0001. According to the entomological stratification of the areas in the municipality, the areas 2 and 3 must be classified as high risk, the areas 1 and 5 as mild risk and the rest of the areas as low risk areas. CONCLUSION: it is of vital importance to be permanently on the alert because Aedes aegypti is present throughout the year in the Cienfuegos municipality.
