ABSTRACT

Abstract Biological samples obtained from a small temporary pond of northern Colombia yielded the first record Coronatella undata Sousa, Elmoor-Loureiro and Santos, 2015 and of the male of C. monacantha (Sars, 1901) for Colombia. In this study, the morphology of female of Coronatella undata and female and male of C. monacantha was described and compared to other species within the genus. C. undata was originally described from Brazil and, among the species of the Coronatella monacantha complex, seems to be closely related to C. acuticostata (Sars, 1903). C. undata shows some similarities with C. monacantha, but it can be identified by important diagnostic characters such as: 1) posterior-ventral corner of valve with two denticles, 2) seta on exopodite of trunk limb II rudimentary, 3) filter comb of trunk limb II with six setae, 4) ODL seta of trunk limb I shorter than longest seta of IDL. C. monacantha is the most reported species in the Neotropical region and the male most resemble C. paulinae Sousa, Elmoor-Loureiro & Santos, 2015 in relation to (i), length/wide of postabdomen ratio (ii) basal spine almost straight and (iii)) long basal spine reaching the mid-length of basal spine. However, they can be separated by (i) number of lateral seta on the antennule, (ii) postanal angle, (iii) position of gonopore (iv) presence of a denticle on posterior-ventral corner of valve

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Temporary ponds are variable aquatic ecosystems in their physical and biotic structure, ephemeral in the landscape and important in the flow of matter and energy. Aquatic macroinvertebrates constitute the most abundant and diverse group in these ecosystems and need further study, particularly in the tropics. Objective: To evaluate the alpha and beta diversity of the aquatic macroinvertebrate communities of six temporary pools during two climatic seasons in Northern Colombia. Methods: In Magdalena, Colombia, we did six random trawls with hand nets in the coastal zone, and six zig zag trawls with D nets in the lacustrine zone; we collected macrofauna in three random hauls with an Ekman dredge; and sampled each pond in high rainfall (November 2020) and low rainfall (February 2021). Results: We identified 3 358 individuals (13 orders, 39 families and 68 genera). The highest rainy season abundance and diversity (N= 485, 0D= 32) were in Los Campanos, while Villa Leidy Pond had the highest number of common (18) and dominant (14) taxa. During the dry season, Los Trillizos Pond had the highest abundance (533) and diversity (43); while Villa Leidy and El Miquito had the largest number of dominant taxa (16). The pools have a particular composition (no spatial or temporal grouping); taxa turnover is high, and the canonical correspondence clustered by season. Conclusions: The aquatic macroinvertebrate communities of the temporary ponds are diverse and have high turnover in space and time, reflecting high replacement of taxa between climatic periods. The littoral zone had a similar composition in the two seasons.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The present study evaluated the frequency of root perforations caused by first- and second-year students of the Endodontics specialty of the Faculty of Dentistry of the UNAB University in Santiago (Chile), between January 2019 and March 2021. Materials and Methods: A descriptive observational study was carried out through data collected retrospectively in clinical records of patients treated in the Postgraduate Endodontics Clinic of the Andrés Bello University (UNAB) during 2019, 2020 and until March 2021. Results: A total of 569 patients were treated during the period, 118 patients were seen by first-year students and 451 by second-year students. The frequency of perforations in the first year was 0% and in the second year it was 2% (n=9). Considering the overall total number of patients, the relative frequency of perforations was only 1.6%. Regarding location, 3 perforations were in the cervical third of the root, 3 in the middle third, 2 in the apical third and 1 in the pulp chamber floor. No perforation resulted in the immediate indication of extraction and all were sealed with calcium silicate-based materials. Conclusions: Te frequency of root perforations by postgraduate students was very low, which could evidence the safety of institutional treatment and teaching protocols. The greatest occurrence of perforations was with second-year students, which can be attributed to the fact that they treat cases of greater complexity.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The immediate rehabilitation of the posterior region of the mandible with dental implants, expands the set of possible actions for the dental surgeon, in the face of tooth loss. The purpose of this study is to describe two cases of single rehabilitation of mandibular molars with hybrid internal tapered implants indicated for immediate loading in post-extraction socket, associated with the maintenance of the prosthetic and peri-implant space. Implants with macrogeometry and surface treatment (Hydrophilic) were used to optimize primary stability, as well as the type of internal connection and prosthetic abutments that allows better accommodation and healing of adjacent tissues, and protection of the bone graft. Different methodologies of surgical guides did not influence the final result. The predictability of associating techniques and components can be observed in the 2-year follow-up. The initial planning combined with the new technologies enable to achieve stable and functional final restorations.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the risks of hair dye exposure, we investigated cellular and molecular effects of Arianor Ebony dye, which is a mixture of azo and anthraquinone dyes, used in the composition of the black color. Cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and gene expression of relevant molecules of apoptotic and oxidative stress mechanisms were investigated in HepG2 cells exposed to Arianor Ebony. Results showed that the dye did not induce cytotoxicity to exposed cells at a concentration up to 50 µg/mL compared to the negative control. However, genotoxic assays indicated that the dye was able to damage the genetic material at a concentration of 25 µg/mL, with induction factor values of exposed cells two- to five-fold higher than those recorded for the negative control. Moreover, the lowest observed effect concentration was 12.5 µg/mL. For gene expression, relevant changes were observed in cytochrome c and caspase 9, which decreased in cells incubated with the dye in a dose-dependent manner when compared with the negative control. In parallel, the expression of genes for antioxidant enzymes was increased in exposed cells, suggesting the presence of metabolic routes that protect cells against the toxic effect of the dye, avoiding exacerbated cellular death. Results suggested that the dye disrupted cellular homeostasis through mitochondrial dysfunction, which may be hazardous to human health. Thus, further investigations are necessary to deeply understand the mechanisms of action of the dye, considering its toxic potential found in our ex vivo assays.

ABSTRACT

The Neotropical freshwater cladoceran Bergamina lineolata (Sars, 1901) was found in a small temporal pond in the Magdalena department. Hitherto, it has been reported in Brazil and El Salvador. It was originally described as Alonella lineolata by Sars, 1901 from Brazil and then placed to the genus Bergamina by Elmoor-Loureiro et al. (2013). This is the first record of this species in Colombia. B. lineolata can be identified by a unique combination of characters including: 1) a remarkably large and oblong postabdomen, with three denticles on distal corner; 2) basal spine of the claw very short, length less than the half claw diameter at base; 3) IDL with two setae shorter than ODL seta, armed with fine setules unilaterally in terminal half; 4) endite 1 of trunk limb I with a long smooth seta between endites 1 and 2.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To explore the construction of a new scientific management model for temporary drug purchase, and to provide a reference for hospitals to improve the level of rational drug use. METHODS Guided by clinical diagnosis and treatment needs and patient medication safety, our hospital carried out the whole process management practice of temporarily purchased drugs by optimizing the review process, creating a review team, formulating pre-audit and post follow-up evaluation standards based on comprehensive drug evaluation, and evaluated the practice effect through the number of temporary purchase applications, implementation rate, drug structure optimization and other indicators. RESULTS Since January 2021, our hospital had implemented a new mode of temporary drug purchase management. By December 2022, clinical pharmacists had reviewed 111 temporary drug procurement applications, effectively intercepted 13 irrational drug use applications (11.71%), reduced the overall implementation rate of temporary drug procurement by 8.36%,and proposed five batches of drug structure optimization suggestions; 24 drugs were successively introduced such as camrelizumab, sorafenib, busulfan. After optimizing the management mode, the number of temporary drug procurement applications decreased by more than half from 133 in 2019 and 138 in 2020 to 66 in 2021 and 45 in 2022. CONCLUSIONS The model is helpful to optimize the hospital drug catalog, strengthen rational drug use, ensure the safety of patients’ drug use, and fully reflects the professional value of clinical pharmacists in hospital pharmacy management and rational drug use.

ABSTRACT

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common cause of lower urinary tract symptoms in men. When drug treatment is ineffective or conventional surgery is not suitable, novel minimally invasive therapies can be considered. These include prostatic urethral lift, prostatic artery embolisation, water vapor thermal therapy, Aquablation-image guided robotic waterjet ablation, temporary implantable nitinol device and prostatic stents. These novel therapies can be performed in outpatient setting under local anesthesia, with shorter operative and recovery times, and better protection of ejaculatory function and erectile function. General conditions of the patient and advantages and disadvantages of the each of these therapies should be fully considered to make individualized plans.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a tool that is already part of our reality, and this is an opportunity to understand how it can be useful in interacting with patients and providing valuable information about orthodontics. Objective: This study evaluated the accuracy of ChatGPT in providing accurate and quality information to answer questions on Clear aligners, Temporary anchorage devices and Digital imaging in orthodontics. Methods: forty-five questions and answers were generated by the ChatGPT 4.0, and analyzed separately by five orthodontists. The evaluators independently rated the quality of information provided on a Likert scale, in which higher scores indicated greater quality of information (1 = very poor; 2 = poor; 3 = acceptable; 4 = good; 5 = very good). The Kruskal-Wallis H test (p< 0.05) and post-hoc pairwise comparisons with the Bonferroni correction were performed. Results: From the 225 evaluations of the five different evaluators, 11 (4.9%) were considered as very poor, 4 (1.8%) as poor, and 15 (6.7%) as acceptable. The majority were considered as good [34 (15,1%)] and very good [161 (71.6%)]. Regarding evaluators' scores, a slight agreement was perceived, with Fleiss's Kappa equal to 0.004. Conclusions: ChatGPT has proven effective in providing quality answers related to clear aligners, temporary anchorage devices, and digital imaging within the context of interest of orthodontics.

ABSTRACT

Various forms of temporary resins are offered on the market; however, the properties of temporary resins obtained by milling and 3D printing have not been fully examined. This study aimed to compare the flexural strength and Vickers hardness of milled and 3D-printed resins. Methods: Three resins were tested: Evolux PMMA (milled resin), Cosmos Temp (3D-printed resin), and Structur 2 SC (bis-acrylic resin, group control). Specimens were prepared with rectangular shapes (n = 12) for flexural strength measurements and disc shapes (n = 9) for Vickers hardness tests. Flexural strength tests were performed at a crosshead speed of 0.75 mm/min, and the Vickers hardness was measured under a load of 20 N for 10 s. The obtained data were subjected to the KruskalWallis test. Results: A significant difference (p < 0.05) in flexural strength was observed among the three sample groups: Evolux PMMA (111.76 MPa), Structur 2 SC (87.34 MPa), and Cosmos Temp (56.83 MPa). No significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed between the Vickers hardness values of Structur 2 SC (33.37 VHN) and Evolux PMMA (29.11 VHN); however, both materials were statistically superior to Cosmos Temp (10.90 VHN). Conclusion: While the mechanical properties of the milled resin were superior or similar to those of the bisacrylic resin, the 3D-printed resin was statistically inferior to both the milled and bis-acrylic resins

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the decision-making by patients to replace temporary restorations with permanent restorations after endodontic treatment and to verify the associated factors and evaluate the quality/integrity of the temporary restorative material within one month. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using non-probabilistic sampling which analyzed patients after one month of endodontic treatment. The self-administered questionnaire contained sociodemographic, treatment decision-making and endodontic treatment questions. The restoration present in the mouth was evaluated in the clinical oral examination. The Poisson Regression test was used to verify the prevalence ratio. Results: The prevalence failure to perform permanent restorations was 61.1% of patients, and 42.7% reported not having adhered. The reasons are lack of time and not knowing the importance of replacing the restoration with a definitive one. The glass ionomer temporary restorative frequency was higher among those who chose not to replace the temporary restoration with a permanent one (PR=5.19; 95%CI 2.10-12.33). In addition, there was an association between the quality of the restorative material and the type of material, and the best clinical quality of the restoration was statistically associated with glass ionomer and composite resin. Conclusions: The findings show the importance of guidance by the dental surgeon in helping patients decide to replace their temporary restoration

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study is to systematically assess the available evidence for relapse of skeletal open bite treatment using temporary anchorage devices and orthognathic surgery. Materials and Methods: Five electronic databases such as MEDLINE, COCHRANE, SCIELO, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, EMBASE were systematically searched up to June 2020. Methodological quality studies were graded by means of the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) Quality Assessment Tool. Results: In total, 1005 studies were identified for screening, and 6 studies were eligible. The quality assessment tool showed moderate quality for all the studies. The immediate post treatment correction of open bite was better in the surgical studies than in the studies treated with TADs. Conclusion: Stability of treatment results of anterior openbite was comparable in cases treated in both the treatment modalities. Relapse of anterior open bite was associated with cases in which the posttreatment overbite was minimal. Overbite seems to be more stable when only the maxilla has been operated on than with bi-maxillary surgeries. Counterclockwise rotation of the mandible with subsequent reduction of anterior facial height was better in surgical correction than through TADs. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate color and surface gloss stability of bis-acryl resins and resin composites, submitted to artificial staining with cigarette smoke. Material and Methods: Specimens of each material were prepared (n=15). Two resin composites (GrandioSO [RCG], Filtek Supreme [RCZ]) and five bis-acryl resins (Luxatemp Star [BisLUX], Protemp4 [BisPRO], Structor3 [BisSTR], Visalys Temp [BisVIS] and Yprov [BisYPR]) were tested. Initial color was assessed using a spectrophotometer and surface gloss with a glossmeter. Samples were submitted to smoke exposure (10 cigarettes under 8 minutes per cycle). After 3 and 6 cycles, color and gloss were reassessed. Final readings were performed after brush prophylaxis. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05). Results: Differences and interaction of factors (p<0.01) were detected for both color and gloss readings. Resin composites were the least affected by aging, with gloss reduction after prophylaxis. Differences were detected among bis-acryl resins, with better results for BisLUX and BisPRO. BisPRO and BisSTR, showed reduction in gloss after 60 cigarettes, while BisYPR gloss decreased at all evaluated periods. Conclusion: Resin composites are less susceptible to changes after smoke exposure, while bis-acryl resins results are brand-dependent. Prophylaxis negatively influenced the surface gloss of most of the tested materials (AU)

Duas resinas compostas (GrandioSO [RCG], Filtek Supreme [RCZ]) e cinco resinas bisacrílicas (Luxatemp Star [BisLUX], Protemp4 [BisPRO], Structor3 [BisSTR], Visalys Temp [BisVIS] e Yprov [BisYPR]) foram testados.
